The lore is as complex as the lyricism and instrumentation. In a nutshell, Sleep is a deity that appeared to Vessel in a dream, which begins this relationship that’s as tumultuous as it is euphoric at times. The band are all “vessels” that unite in the worship of Sleep. A token is a payment or offering, so the name implies that the band itself exists as an offering to Sleep. Along with this story of Sleep, you’ll find references and hints of other religions and mythology. Lots of references to the book of Genesis in this album, but there are bits of pieces of the stories of other gods and goddesses throughout. What’s crazy is that these references can be literal and metaphorical. Lyrics are written to be specific enough to advance this story of Sleep that seems to borrow from a lot of sources, yet he leaves them vague enough to be relatable for the listener. That’s an insanely difficult thing to do yet it comes off as effortless. Vessel is a prodigy. Total prodigy.
I mean...in my head, the whole album is about himself and his (mostly toxic?) relationships, wrapped in mythology metaphors. This one for example presents a praying mantis sex (you can see "bleeding" praying mantis in the video) and these animals kill their partner while f*cking. So...yeah has interesting memories on sex with his ex :D
@@grimfist79 But that's the genius of the lyricism. It works congruently as both songs about literal human relationships but also this give and take relationship with a deity named Sleep. On its face, it seems like a guy writing songs about a past relationship with a woman that was both loving and toxic, but once you read more into key phrases and words, you'll find that connection to this mythology about some deity that has a hold over this man, a relationship with a god that's controlling and tests his free will. I personally find it to be brilliant song writing. A lot of religious people could certainly relate to a relationship like that--their life being a struggle, questioning why they're so devoted to this being that certainly seems to take a lot but rarely gives.
As a hardcore metal fan, most metal scream you can hear anger but this song, you can clearly hear pain and almost begging like? i love this song so much.
I think the change in the band is going back to their roots . Everyone in the band except Vessel is from a metal background. It makes sense this is the direction of the band moving forward .
One of their best songs in my opinion. Although, with this band, there's no bad songs. None at all. They create magic. When I found this band, it felt like discovering a new colour.
A lot of people seem to dislike this song. But, it's one of my favorites on the album. The second half of the song gives me a strong Nobuo Uematsu (Final Fantasy) vibe which i really like. That chord progression is so good.
Idk how people are disliking it but its understandable, not everyone has a taste for vore. But the second part, the setup, the breakdown, dude that pain....atleast it hits you right? It hit me hard dude i fuckin got tears....like ARE YOU IN PAIN LIKE I AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMM?
This album's kinda neat to me because there is a group that likes all of the songs, and then 2 other groups that I think of as the "Heavier enjoyers" vs the "Experimental enjoyers". Someone might love songs like Rain and hate songs like Vore, while another person you ask loves songs like Vore & the first half of The Summoning but don't like songs like TMBTE and Are You Really Ok? I'd imagine that a lot of the people who don't like it probably aren't really metalheads to begin with, or they are huge metalheads who just don't like the sound of the song bc it is being compared to other metal songs.
I flew to Manchester last week to see Sleep Token live. I was a bit worried about his voice not being this perfect. But when they hit the stage, I could not believe that these guys sound so much better live! (INCLUDING HIS VOCALS) :O
I’m still here waiting on you to react to THE OFFERING from their first album. Sometimes I wish you guys would do a full album reaction from start to finish of their discography, SERIOUSLY!! Everyone wants you to 🤘🏻👍🏻 VORE is awesome!! It’s a change in the album flow, it was like a right hook you didn’t see coming, absolute banger of a track
I second the discography journey!! Also, if I’m not mistaken, the symbols Kyle mentioned being around the screen of the video are the runes for “Vore”. They did that on the album art, putting the runes for the song titles down the side of the art 😊
Vore is in my top 2 on this album with the title track and Ascensionism tying for 1st place. I love the transitions and the possible meaning the lyrics have, especially "Will we remain stuck in the throat of gods?" and all the references to being eaten alive that also appear in the bible. In the judeo-christian lore, after Adam ate the forbidden fruit, God made a chunk of the apple to be stuck in Adam's throat and the laryngeal protuberance was since passed on to all men as a reminder of the first man's sin. The swallowing seems to me that is a metaphor for giving in for temptation, to numb yourself by feeling the pain at its maximum level.
So the "writing" that you're seeing are actually the runes from the entire album. Each song (on their records) has the title written in this language, and there are messages they've sent us in these runes as well. Several people have decrypted the runes and it really is just a hell of a ride to read what Sleep is telling us
Gutted you guys missed the blegh after the 2nd "are you in pain like I am" at the end! It's really deep in the mix but it's a proper blegh, he goes hard on it live! Thankful enough to have seen them 5 times already, and again next week!!

" I cant imagine what its like live " After seeing them this June I will say this it is fantastic ,captivating and wondrous and I cant wait to see what they do when they swing back round to europe in the Autumn
Late reply but you're the first comment I see mentioning the swallowed whole part. No one's talked about the song title here and how it ties in!! Vore comes from a Latin word meaning "swallow / devour". And Vore is the shortened word for Vorarephilia, which is the erotic desire to be consumed by, or to consume, another person or creature. The music video is of a prey mantis/woman which ties to female prey mantis who oftentimes eat their mates whole, during or after breeding with then. The whole song is about consuming oneself, consuming someone else and wanting to be consumed by them. Vessel's a poet
Gonna be honest, I was shocked when I first heard this song and it took me a few listens before I could get behind it and then I read the lyrics and was like "Oh yeah, this is the sh√t!!!" Lol Great reaction as usual guys, keep doing your thing!
When my boyfriend and I went to our show after Vore he turned to me and said “if I was in a fight this is the song I’d want to play.” He hadn’t really listened to Sleep Token before the concert so he had completely fresh eyes for the show and their sound. 😂
I would love to see you guys react to their first album sundowning! Its such a beautiful wide variety album just like TMBTE. I know you guys would love it!! You gotta check it out!!!
Going through all your Sleep Token reactions.... loving your perspective and takes on how you interpret the lyrics. Some hate the fade out on Vore but it fits. It's like Vessel is being swallowed whole by the Deity and as he vanishes down the throat of the god his voice slowly fades away
Im going back through your reactions because i saw them live on 5/28/24. While you are referencing "what is vore like live?" i just want to say them live, with their atmosphere, its like your soul is awakening for the first time.
Alkaline has a video with Vessel. It's from the previous album, but I think you'd really enjoy it next. As far as concerts go, I saw them in 2022 and they opened with Alkaline. Sleep Token is full of lore. Lore aside, to me Vore and the whole album is about losing a relationship.
Hint: the symbols are actually the song titles! I got the vnyil of TMBTE, and you get the album art in a booklet, i noticed its the same as the titles (most people figure it out not saying im the only one🤣) there's also a hidden message too, i made a key and decoded it! Its just so fun that the band puts so much detail into their music and their art!! Love this band sm, would love to see album reactions for sundowning, and this will become your tomb, they are amazing albums that create a cohesive story with TMBTE as well!!! Love this reaction❤
I don't think you've done it yet, but if you're gonna do some more from this album you have to react to the closer Euclid. It's one of their best in terms of songwriting. Incredible piece of music.
You guys should definitely do aqua regia if you haven’t already yet ( I don’t believe you have, because I’ve been trying to keep up with all of your sleep token stuff for a while now). If you have, then the apparition would be the next best to check out. I love your reactions and can’t wait to watch more!
I like to think of this album (and the previous two albums) as a Broadway show. Sundowning: Act 1 - we’re introduced to Vessel and Sleep. Sleep is “wooing” vessel to spend eternity in this world he/she has created specifically for Vessel. TPWBYT: Act 2 - Vessel has accepted to stay with Sleep, and journeys through the various possibilities for his eternity with Sleep Take me Back To Eden: Act 3 - Vessel sees a “door” for one option that is guarded (The Summoning), and has to convince Sleep to let him see it. Sleep says he cannot see in, unless this is for sure the option he chooses… so he does. What follows is (at first) a world full of love and warmth with a woman who seems familiar, but he grows very attached to. As the album progresses, Vessel gets flashes of who he once was, and begins having to face these demons that he had in real life, all while chasing this woman who feels familiar. It turns at “Are you really Ok.” He recognizes the woman from his real life relationship, watches her self-harm, and can’t fix her, despite an incredible love for her and wanting to. The apparition is her ghost after ultimately succumbing to her own self-harm. We start to learn that Vessel is a normal man, and he went through a traumatic event with the woman he loved. It was toxic, and she needed help (likely mental health concerns), and when she died, he spiraled, and created this world of Sleep and Vessel to fill the void that was now missing. TMBTE the track is him finally deconstructing what’s happening and tearing down Vessel, Sleep, the whole thing. Euclid is a rebirth. A re-awakening from this depressive funk he has been in, after her death, and finally making peace, and moving on. A new version of himself. That’s my take anyway. Sleep token Lore Yippee!!
For some context, "Let's get swallowed whole" has a lot of weight behind it when you know of the songs Vessel wrote with the girl he loved before he donned the mask. We went from "Don't let the world swallow you" to " Let's get swallowed whole"..... together.
ua-cam.com/video/b5E7ymvyTP0/v-deo.html This is by far the best live recording of them (so far). And it has Vore on the set, as well as The Summoning. Someone in the comments has a time stamp for each song on the set. Be awesome if you did a reaction to one, or some, of them 🤘🏻 Also… if you wanna hear vessel do a blegh, watch Higher at the end of the set 😉
At one point in this reaction, I wondered how you would feel about having the lyrics pulled up for Born to Lead by FIR since it is more of a instrument performance, and then Kyle mentioned the shorter side of Vore’s lyrical length, and it made me laugh! Really would like to see Born to Lead or Rolling Stone by FIR reacted to sometime, but can definitely handle some more Sleep Token! And I’m on the same “People Hater’s” bus that Carbs ride on
The catholic church smoke piece you are referring to is called a 'Censer' and it burns incense. It is also sometimes referred to as a perfume burner or pastille burner.
Love watching your reaction videos. If you’re not familiar with the band Kardashev, I think you would enjoy them. They are considered to be in the deathgaze genre. My top suggestions would be Torchpassing, Between Sea and Sky, Compost Grave-Song and Glass Phantoms.
Lore from Sleep Token nerd: Things take a dark turn, reflecting the timbre of the song. Vessel and his lover are diving head first now “getting swallowed whole” despite their knowledge of how damaging this relationship is. There’s no turning back now (the name Vore also refers to a fetish, which somewhat feels poignant in this case). The couple are going where “no one will ever go” despite there always being “something in the way”, or Vessel is saying they are going as deep as possible with this relationship. (not my info)
I wouldn't say his vocals are gutteral. They are fry's but they are just seriously distorted. And the chorus in this is just absolutely grabbing. I'm not a huge fan of the insanely distorted vocals but I love the rest of this.
Most of the alphabet with the symbols have been deciphered now. Just a couple of letters missing 🙂. When I heard the ‘is that..?’, I honestly thought you were going to say ‘chewing’ I can hear? Which is there in the background. So many layers to find in their songs that are quite hidden.

We went from "Don't let the world swallow you" to " Let's get swallowed whole"..... together.
All there songs hit me in my core
I can confirm, this song is fucking incredible live.
But they play it in the middle
Listening to this album is like Bastian reading the never ending story. It's an experience.
They supplied art for each of the songs, sort of a character image. The visualizers are of those images.
Google Vore meaning. The lyrics and theme prevade the whole album.
fun fact - IV (the guitarist) does some of the screaming in this song during live performances ☺️
Vore is amazing, thanks again ♥

This is by far the best live recording of them (so far). And it has Vore on the set, as well as The Summoning. Someone in the comments has a time stamp for each song on the set.
Be awesome if you did a reaction to one, or some, of them 🤘🏻
Also… if you wanna hear vessel do a blegh, watch Higher at the end of the set 😉
Sleep Token definitely has many layers, woww!
Ikr?! Each song is so different from the next, but still as good. Also 👋 RR Mom, hope u r doing well💛
I love the drumming in this song
Atlantic, do it, feel it
First time hearing this one, like the others, I’ve heard first from y’all. I like it, just gonna have to look up the lyrics 😅
This song sounds soo much like axe to fall era converge.. I love it!
ST's heaviest song 🤘
cant wait for them to get to the breakdown of The Offering
Would be nice to see you guys react to older stuff from them like: the offering, Atlantis, Jaws.
I hope to see them live one day, already sold out in US. 😢
And I’m on the same “People Hater’s” bus that Carbs ride on
Another great reaction. Next, check out their cover of Outkast's Hey Ya!
The two eughs at the end are so dirty
The catholic church smoke piece you are referring to is called a 'Censer' and it burns incense. It is also sometimes referred to as a perfume burner or pastille burner.
Keep churning out this album
LETS GOOO MORE SLEEP TOKEN 🔥🔥🔥
Never thought I'd love getting my face ripped off so much 😂
Love watching your reaction videos. If you’re not familiar with the band Kardashev, I think you would enjoy them. They are considered to be in the deathgaze genre. My top suggestions would be Torchpassing, Between Sea and Sky, Compost Grave-Song and Glass Phantoms.
That black liquid is worship juice my guys lmao
My favourite Sleep Token at the moment, dismissed it until I read the lyrics!
Amazing song
Guys, please please please do Alkaline next time. It’s a music video and I’m sure you guys will really like it. That said, Vore is heavy as shit.
