  • I MISSED SOME PARTS!!!
    1)Pereat tristitia,
    Pereant osores.
    Pereat diabolus,
    Quivis antiburschius
    Atque irrisores. --
    -----
    Let sadness perish!
    Let haters perish!
    Let the devil perish,
    Along with anybody else who is anti-scholarship
    And anti-intellectual!
    2) Quis confluxus hodie
    Academicorum?
    E longinquo convenerunt,
    Protinusque successerunt
    In commune forum.
    ----
    Why has such a multitude of the academy
    Come here today?
    They have come together from far and wide;
    And now forthwith they ascend
    Into the academic forum!
    3)Vivat nostra societas,
    Vivant studiosi
    Crescat una veritas,
    Floreat fraternitas
    Patriae prosperitas
    ----
    Long live our faculty association!
    Long live those devoted to learning!
    May unity in the truth increase,
    May our brotherhood
    And the prosperity of our country flourish!
    4) Alta Mater floreat,
    Quae nos educavit;
    Caros et commilitones,
    Dissitas in regiones,
    Sparsos, congregavit
    ----
    May our Nourishing Mother thrive,
    the university who has educated us!
    Dear ones and comrades
    from scattered regions,
    although divided, have now congregated!
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
    A student's Epicurean response (c.1287) to the Stoic Seneca's De Brevitate Vitae (On the Shortness of Life)?
    Executive summary:
    1. Life's short; so let's party.
    2. We're headed for heaven or hell.
    3. Death is unavoidable.
    4. But the academic life is best.
    5. Statesmen and benefactors sustain it.
    6. We can't forget to praise women.
    7. But we condemn all enemies of the intellectual life.
    To be sung when dining together as students:
    Gaudeamus igitur
    Juvenes dum sumus.
    Post jucundam juventutem
    Post molestam senectutem
    Nos habebit humus.
    Ubi sunt qui ante nos
    In mundo fuere?
    Vadite ad superos
    Transite in inferos
    Hos si vis videre.
    Vita nostra brevis est
    Brevi finietur.
    Venit mors velociter
    Rapit nos atrociter
    Nemini parcetur.
    Vivat academia!
    Vivant professores!
    Vivat membrum quodlibet
    Vivant membra quaelibet
    Semper sint in flore.
    Vivant et res publica
    et qui illam regit.
    Vivat nostra civitas,
    Maecenatum caritas
    Quae nos hic protegit.
    Vivant omnes virgines
    Faciles, formosae.
    Vivant et mulieres
    Tenerae, amabiles
    Bonae laboriosae.
    Pereat tristitia,
    Pereant osores.
    Pereat diabolus,
    Quivis antiburschius
    Atque irrisores.
    ~~~
    Therefore let us party
    While we are young!
    After pleasant youth
    After troublesome old age
    The earth will have us!
    Where are they who before us
    Have been in the world?
    Go up to the heavenly regions
    Or cross over into the hellish ones
    If you wish to see them!
    Our life is brief;
    It will be ended shortly!
    Death comes quickly;
    Cruelly it snatches us;
    No one will be spared
    Long live the university!
    Long live the profs!
    Long live any student!
    Long live any students whatsoever!
    May they always be the best!
    Long live the republic also
    And those who rule it!
    Long live our city,
    And the charity of benefactors
    Which protects us here!
    Long live all virgins
    Affable and shapely!
    Long live mature women also,
    Tender and lovely,
    Loyal and industrious!
    Let sadness perish!
    Let haters perish!
    Let the devil perish,
    Along with anybody else who is anti-scholarship
    And anti-intellectual!
    In how many countries do people sing this song at their graduation? I thought only in romance language speaking countries people sing this, ourselves included, since it's in latin. But I was wrong, stupid me!
    Also, in how many countries is latin taught? I'm just curious, 'cause we learn it. At least for now.
      In Hungary they also sing this song. I think it is because the language of science and administration was latin Europe-wide, universities used it as well. So universities also have the tradition of using latin language.
      In Hungary, latin is taught mostly in christian schools and only on basic level.
      "Long live the girls so gracious and beautiful" objectifies egg-producing people, and "long live our country" sounds like endorsement of an exclusive patriarchy.
  • @ely131
    Actually... "hos si vis videre" translates "if you want to see them", "mors... nemini parcetur" literally means "death will not be spared to anybody", "semper sint in flore" means "may they always be safe/fine/healthy (literally: be in bloom)".
    The original lyrics then says "vivant omnes virgines FACILES formosae (faciles = easy, easy to seduce :) yep, bear in mind that it is a goliardic song, it should be intended as a joke, as something fun).
    "Vivat... maecenatum charitas" means "long live the charity of patrons". Why "maecenatum" (genitive plural of maecenas, maecenatis)? During the reign of Augustus, his ally Maecenas reunited, protected and financially supported poets such as Virgil and Horace... the BOSSES of latin literature! :) His influence was such to set a tradition - think of the Medici during Renaissance, just to make a common example. Even today, "mecenatismo" is the italian word for "patronage", and "mecenate" is for "patron".
    The rest of the traslation is more or less correct, even when not strictly literal.
    Sorry if I made any grammar/spelling mistakes, english is not my mother tongue. Have a nice day, hope I made someone curious about latin!
    • @ely131
      @ely131 8 років тому +18
      Other two things:
      1) "qui illam regit" (that's what they sing, but the lyrics in video is not correct).
      2) last verse is "maecenatum charitas qui nos hic PROTEGIT". The choir is correct, the lyrics in video are not. "Protegunt" is wrong because it's plural, and doesn't match with the subject charitas which is singular. Protegit is third person singular, so it's correct for charitas.
    I will never forget it: we were in the last year of the gymnasium and there were some pals who came back to celebrate the 50th aniversary of their graduation. Those old gentlemen sang it so beautifully, so full of heart, that it drove tears into my eyes. We, as the young generation, had to wellcome them and to sing with them.
    Later, at my own university graduation I had much less feelings about it. There were so many other important things to think and feel about then... (like the death of my father)
    Tomorrow it's my graduation ceremony, and i don't know how i found ten minutes ago this song.. and i cried my eyes out for the last 10 minutes.. i allways wanted to get rid of high school, and parents and be on my own in college.. but now i realised that i have to grow up and take all the responsability on my shoulders, and i would turn back the time if i could.. tomorrow it's my last day in high school, and i'm so scared.
    In my country students always sing this beautiful song on celebrations of 17th November - International Students' Day. This day is very important for us, because its origin is in our country (Czech Republic).
    On 17th November of 1939 Czech universities were stormed by Nazis and students captured by them were subsequently killed and sent to concentration camps. This day we commemorate them.
    Especially on Law school of Charles University students honour the memory of rector Bedřich Hrozný and his great bravery. When Nazis came that tragic day to Law school, he stood against them, stating to the German officer in charge that the Germans had no legal right to pursue students on the independent university's territory. Nazis were so surprised by this situation, that their really left. When they came back after several hours, with an official order to occupy Law school and imprison students, they found the whole building empty, because students were evacuated in the meantime. His unbelievable bravery safe lives of many students that day...
    2:24 not graciles but facilis = easy or affable
    2:58 regit not regunt, so it is singular.
    vita nostra brevis est,
    brevi finietur
    venit mors velociter,
    rapit nos atrociter,
    nemini parcetur,
    nemini parcetur.
    I think this song originated in Germany or Eastern Europe. Traditionally, these colleges enrolled men only, hence the
    praise of girls and women, whom they idealized and romanticized (might not be a bad idea to revive that custom).
    Their parties were very much a part of the college culture, such as the Beaux Arts Ball, which was an amazing grand
    spectacle put on for over a hundred years by architecture students. University work was extremely intense and difficult--Latin was used a great deal for various classes and readings. So they blew off steam, while incorporating their college work experience in the lyrics. It was expected that a college educated man would develop a sense of philosophy and history
    and perspective on life--hence the lyrics throughout--however, the main focus came to be on PAHTTTEEE!
    How I wished to hear this song live as part of the academic procession for my PhD graduation this year but COVID-19 just wouldn't allow us to be great in 2020!
    Hey, the audio sings "ubi iam fuere" but the subtitles are wrong, is not "Hos si vis videre". Dunno if is the audio or the lyrics that are wrong, but I thought I was deaf or smthg 'cause jeez, that doesn't sound much close.
