@@sniper9143 Limited by modern standards. Phone calls and cell phones were very much traceable back then, too. CALEA didn't exist yet, so it wasn't exactly real-time. Changing his ESN ("cloning") meant his phone was linked to someone else. That's harder to do these days as the networks are far more integrated - the same ESN showing up more than once can be detected _automatically_ within seconds. Locating an ESN within the network took a while; locating a phone number is instantaneous, because that's how the PSTN functions. (esp. for _mobile_ phones.)
Moving around, changing your identity makes you just as had to find today as 40 years ago. Of course, changing your identity has gotten much harder, because it's now a going concern.

He just did it as pranks but was likely an even more powerful dual-hemisphere thinker like a Steve Jobs with his artistic and linear lobes well developed if he had the right guidance or impetus. I was there for the full 8 hour day, and they even played bocce ball at lunch. I was honest about whom I was, but I was shocked at how friendly they were, and giving me access to phone in, and half a dozen books. That is a 180, from where we are today. 85% of Corporate losses are sourced from employees who felt betrayed by their masters. {source: Mitnick's book} Focusing on the 15% of losses that a exogenous to the Corporate structure is disingenuous at best. Corporations are their own worst enemy, which is a systemic consequence of contradictions in ownership and value-distribution. Just as Clayton Christensen predicted, all corporations fail, eventually, from their own systemic inadequacies to account for the Social Management fallacies that they institute within their governance methodologies. Hackers aren't the problem, they' re just a symptom of a larger order problem.
