    I lost over 80 pounds and yes the excess skin drove me crazy....but over a year later it has greatly shrunk. I use intermittent fasting and hope autophagy is slowly eating up that excess skin and it seems to be working. Slowly, surely not a quick fix. I also take collagen, biotin, vitamin C, etc etc so the new skin cells being formed are as healthy as possible. I personally don't think anyone should consider surgery unless they have waited at least two years since their weight stabilized.

    My husband lost 120 lbs through water fasting (14 days every month) and alternate-day fasting. He is a a bio-chemist and was determined to stimulate autophagy as much as possible. He also took supplements (magnesium, potassium and salt) when on a long fast. He lifted weights to increase muscle strength. He does have some loose skin but the increase in muscle mass has minimized the look of it. He now maintains his weight with a low carb healthy meal plan and eats within a 4 hour window each day. He does water fasting twice a month for the health benefits now. He looked at his weight loss journey from a scientific approach and read countless research papers. He is 67 years old but people think he is in his 50s. He ran his first half marathon and continues to lift weights.

      @@Pomsbunny It took my husband 10 months to lose 120 lbs. The first few months he did extensive water fasts since he had so much fat that it would be impossible for the body to use his lean muscle for fuel. He started out with 21 day fasts and then did 14 day fasts with a few weeks of OMAD in between fasts. He always made sure he took his mineral supplements. As he approached is goal, his water fasts were 3-5 days, no longer.

    Good observation on how fat people avoid looking at their bodies. But after losing the massive weight we tend to be obsessed about our lose skin. I’ve just hit the 100 pound lost goal this month. I’m hesitant in joining a gym because I’m not sure if I can maintain that life style in the long term. Very good advice on lose skin surgery. Thank You. I will probably just keep my shirt on in public. Overall fitting comfortable in 32 waist slacks from a 42 waist is good looking enough. But what I have a problem with now is I still see myself as fat. I went from morbidly obese to now considered overweight. Which pisses me off. Weight charts claim in should be 135 and I did get down to 134 and I looked horrible! I looked at least 10 years older. So I gained some back and 145 is fine! For God's sake I was 306 pounds.

    Thank you Dr Cywes!!! At 55 years old, membership in a recovery program helped me to let go of 167 lbs slowly over a 3 1/2 year period! The time it took to lose that weight helped me to heal body, mind, and spirit and to slowly adjust to my new body shape. Recovery programs are not a quick fix, we learn, over time, a sane way of living and coping with life without harming ourselves with food or anything else! I exercise by walking and gentle yoga. I was left with a wrinkly face, saggy neck, belly, and thighs but was grateful for all the benefits that come along with reducing my body size by half! Natural skin repair didn't happen in a year but I was surprised that even at my age my neck now looks normal and the belly and thighs have slowly improved! I'm grateful to have sanity around food and look a bit better than my age, in clothes. I even look OK in shorts! Without clothes, I don't look the way I did in my 20's, that is for sure, but even at 65 years old by my following a healthy (Keto) food plan, I don't need medications, have plenty of energy, feel upbeat, and I'm happy to have all my own body parts in good working order! :) Bless you Dr Cywes, Thank you for all you do to help us improve our lives!

      There is possible non surgical method, but it requires extended fasting, like 6+ days, which can cause the body to go into a deep starvation state and starts burning muscle extensively for fuel. From my own understanding, you can do a weekly/biweekly 3 day fast which help keep the body recycling destroyed/faulty proteins (loose skin in this case) while not dipping into starvation.

    I am 5'10" and I went from 230 pounds to 168 pounds. I had no loose skin at the end. I credit this to two things. I took about a gram of niacin per day and ate low protein and low fat in addition to being on keto. My moles even shrank down to freckles. I had a scar from a large mole that removed off my body thirty years ago disappear. That scar was horrid cause the sutures popped 2 days after the removal and my derm doctor said it will fill in and look awful but its on your hip so no bid deal. That scar looked like a freakish looking bloodshot bluish eyeball for thirty years and the damn thing is gone. My stretch marks even got eaten by my body almost completely. I had really bad stretch marks in both arm pits from years of lifting weights and bench press giving me large pecs. Niacin would have seriously been dilating my blood vessels close to the skin and my low protein diet and basically starvation would have been causing autophagy to grab anything with protein in it that isn't critical and break it down for new tissue from my moderate workouts. I never understood why a fat person that has large muscles from carrying around all that extra weight would be eating protein in large amounts on keto......or fat for that matter. You only eat lots of fat until you are fat adapted. I ate about 50-60 grams of protein per day and often went as low as 25gms. I know I lost muscle too and that is fine. My size 12 shoes wouldn't fit anymore and I had to buy size 10.5-11 which is the size I wore in high school. This all took about 4 months to happen. The body can do strange ass shit when you give it no choice. Hope this helps someone.

    • @1GoldenBreeze
      @1GoldenBreeze Рік тому +3

      There's a big difference between losing 100+ lbs and losing 60 lbs. It seems that major loose skin is a larger issue the more weight you lose over 75 lbs. Other things that affect how much loose skin one has and how much it will bounce back are age, the length of time spent in obesity, whether one has done yo-yo-ing, and the condition of the skin. Some people are just born with skin that has great snapback. This shows in the difference in snapbacks of some women who have babies, never get stretch marks, and within a few weeks, their abdomens are as flat as they were before pregnancy. It's also evident in people who always look 20 years younger than they are and never do anything to their skin other than basic skincare. Unfortunately, most people do not have that type of skin.

      @@meglukes- yeah, everything I’ve heard is that high fat, moderate protein (making sure to get enough) is VERY important for skin. They are both building blocks for the body, so I would never go that route. Sounds like someone who is a vegan perhaps. Although, Dr. Cywes does talk about eating higher fat until you’re fat adapted, then lowering it when you’re trying to lose fat, and then upping it again once you’re in maintenance. Dr. Elizabeth Bright talks about fat being extremely important, especially for female hormones. It’s kind of an experiment as far as determining what works best for you.

    Thank you for the encouraging words. I have lost 135 pounds on Keto - 7 more to go to make weight as a Lightweight Rower (as I was in college). Considered skin reduction surgery and joked with my G.I. doctor when he was getting ready to do a incisional hernia repair last February that if he wanted to try some plastic surgery I was game (two years ago I had an infection and was life-flighted off a cruise ship to Finland where they removed 2/3 of my large intestine and managed to reconnect it without a colostomy...but the original incision opened in my abdomen). It was, however during the recovery from the hernia surgery that kept me from rowing for 5 weeks that I decided that how I looked wearing less than a pair of shorts was not worth the pain of surgery, the inability to work out during recovery, and the risk of infection. I have to admit that I clicked on the link hoping you would recommend some treatment or cream....but also knew that you would say those things are BS!

It helps a little to reduce some excess skin but overall it's always good to train a lot of different muscle. Even if you do very easy 'work-outs' (which you should always start with to not hurt yourself) it will help most of all your brain to reverse also some IR there. You can't ask for more than something that can(!) help you immediately and in the long run especially if you start early with it.

Do you know what loose skin is? It's not a "reminder", but it's a sign that you won that battle with carb addiction! Having loose skin means you've done the work! You should be proud of it! I have Keiser Permanente of WA (state) and I wasn't concerned about the excess skin. The neck bothered me a but but it was better then having a huge fat neck that was ugly and gross and I hated it. I did IF from day one of my keto journey as well as longer fasts. I believe that helped a lot because I lost over 150 pounds in 2 years and my skin is not that bad.
    Unfortunately I've had a lot of issues with infection and rashes under my belly loose skin. It will not go away and to make a long story short I asked my PCP about it and got a referral to plastic surgery at Keiser and my insurance is going to cover it.
    I have some other issues down under that need addressing but I've been told they will only pay for the tummy. So I am fine with that. I will probably need to see a urologist for the other or may GYN.
    I am 59 (60 in March) and I was fat for a long time. Most of my adult life because I am a binge eater. I used to be anorexic. Go figure..traded one eating disorder for another. I hear that happens a lot though.
    I just don't know if I can "pick" my surgeon so that's something I will have to ask.
    I see the surgeon on Nov 12th. I'm also scared to have this kind of surgery. I never thought I would be doing it.
    This information was helpful and I will still ask the questions .
    My insurance has requirements to get this covered and one of them is to show you've kept your weight steady for at least 6 months and it's been a year for me. I've lost a lot of weight and I'm proud of that. Also like to add, I don't have stretch marks.😊🙃

      I read your comment and have been assessed for a tummy tuck, a few years ago now. I’m in the uk so I would have to pay for it. I’ve lost54 pounds which doesn’t seem like a lot, but I had 4 big babies, the 4th when I was 37. 11lb 8 ounces. Through fasting 36 hrs plus, weekly. Sunday evening to Tuesday morning, it has reduced. I’m 66. My son said if he won the lottery he would pay for my surgery, I’m not certain if the time came I would go through with it. Best wishes from Devon uk

    Had a full abdominoplasty, thigh lift and brachioplasy, all at different times, after losing 40kgs with a lapband. Happiest with the abdominoplasty because even though I regained most of the weight, I kept a flat stomach. Brilliant plastic surgeon. Thankfully due to fasting, I’ve lost all the weight again, got rid of the horrible lapband and have an even flatter stomach, yay. Other two procedures done by a different PS. Still have nerve pain and horrible scars on arms, thighs not too bad scar wise. Guess you can’t win them all.

      Increasing protein massively is a very bad idea. I weigh 200 pounds and lean mass is about 70 pounds and I only eat half that in protein per day. Meaning, 30 grams of protein per day and I have been building tons of muscle just fine. High protein diet only = kidney disease and not much more

    I had skin removed 2 years after 130lbs loss and now i have flat belly on bottom half and muffin top on top half of belly and my mons is like a sac. Loved results of gastric sleeve but regret skin removal. btw was not plastic surgeon that did it. Was all part of bariatric clinic process here in Canada so was no cost. We were told that its not cosmetic surgery....simply removal of excess skin. Im not sure what i expected but it certainly was not the result I got. Cant change it now but if had 2 do it again knowing what I know now I would never have done skin removal. My clothes fit me funny and always have to wear long tunic tops to cover bulge at my crotch. 💔

    Thanks for this info. My sister went through plastic surgery, after losing almost 100 lbs. and it's been almost a year, and she still has some swelling.
    Hubby asked me if I wanted to do that when I get to my goal weight (I've lost 100, with 25 to go), and I said I don't think so. He never had a problem with my weight, but he's happy now that I'm in much better health, and he's fine with the way I look. We're both working out at the gym doing resistance and treadmill, so that, along with some autophagy, will tighten up what's left.
    Yeah, I'll have some jiggles on arms and legs when in a swimsuit, but I'll have saved some $

    I've been keto since December of last year. I've lost 27lbs. I've stalled so badly and I still need to lose another 100lbs. I've given up what I want to eat and while my bloodwork has improved, I'm still so fat. 5'4" and 243lbs. I've tried slowly merging into fasting but I feel so awful when I do it. I can't exercise because my knees are shot. I just don't know what to do anymore. I have an appointment with you in November that I made back in Mayish. I'll be glad when I can talk to you face to face and get some help. I have no dr in my area who believes in the benefits of a low/no carb diet.

      for your knees i would suggest walking and drinking plenty of water. its great for the sinovial fluid around them. I used to get arthritis in my knees all the time, since i started walking its gone completely. If you cant walk search UA-cam there are some good videos on exercises for your knees. Even sitting on a table and swinging your legs helps. If you do start walking build up gradually, even if you start off only doing 15 mins a day it will be of great benefit and its amazing how quickly you will build upto doing an hour or more each time you go for one. Its also great for your mental health too. Ive been doing Keto for about 18 months, everybody stalls at some point

      Intermittent Fasting, starting with 16/8 and moving on to 18/6 and then 20/4 about at about 4 month intervals. Also, stay low carb but reduce the amount of fat you consume daily. Everyone CAN lose weight (I'm very insulin resistant, with severe fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, two full hip replacements and thyroid issues, so I'm speaking from experience) if determined to do so. To break your stall, do a 5-day DIY Fasting Mimicking Diet (google it for details) OR have 2-3 days of just 2 avocados and a large lettuce salad (olive oil and kemon juice dressing) a day. Either approach will get you back into ketosis, after which you can resume your low carb diet but with increased protein and reduced fat intake (5/35/60). For exercise, do chair yoga: you'll find plenty of free chair yoga videos here on UA-cam. Best wishes!

      Mermandi76 . stick with the keto..If your not losing weight look at what your eating to check carb content..look for variety in your fod but cut out any sweetners or artificial sugars- they trigger your sweet tooth so easier to do with out. Ease into fasting don't jump in. MAybe see if you can get by on 2 meals and 18 /6 fasting maybe looking to go to one meal a day over time if you need to. When you are truly in ketosis you don't get hungry so one meal is fine. But maintain fluids and salt . And watch as many of Dr Eric Bergs videos as you can find. Also look for different and easy low carb meals the more variety the easier you just pick the ones you like. Its a lifestyle not just a diet. And remember to get any medicine adjustd as you go. I had to stop all my diabetes meds because I don't need them anymore, and my wife had to adjust her thyroid meds - cut them back because she didn't need as many.

What I've been doing and am doing. 1. a lot of saturated animal fats in the diet. 2. interval fasting. I eat once a day. 3. cold shower. 4. physical exercises. 5 avoid sugar, starch, vegetable oils. how to lose weight so that the skin does not sag? I don't know what else to add.

    Love this! I'm 43, at the beginning of my weight lifting focus journey for the next year before scheduling any consults. I am looking to have 2??? surgeries, a 360 fleur de lis body lift and breast reduction/lift extending into side boob to mini brachioplasty. No more weight for me to lose, only to get more fit and increase muscle%/lower fat%. Bc as you say the excess fat I have is all attached to the skin on my UPPER stomach(apple shaped) and flanks. Been stable many years. Have been following some surgeons for years, but also researching more now. I'm not naive to complications, scars, imperfection. Doing this for myself only and was always the plan(at least the breast reduction, lol!) Have not found any surgeons who seem to really specialize in reconstruction after massive weight loss in my area(Boston) up to my standard as far as pictures I've seen, so I will be traveling(US) for surgery and understand I will need to stay in the area for some time if complications arrive.

    Dr. Cywes do you have anyone in your group who has consistenly done extended water fasts in attempt to combat excess skin? As in weekly 48-72 hour fasts with 5 day water fast once a month, and doing 20:4 intermitten fasting on the feeding days? I believe fasting to be a great way to combat excess skin due to autophagy.

    • @cherryl225
      @cherryl225 3 роки тому +11

      I think autophagy works to some extent to tighten loose skin if you do it right. Im skeptical, but i will draw some correlations. Here me out:
      In my experience, a 3 week water fast didnt produce loose skin, i only supplemented with about 500 mg potassium in gel caps. However, a couple years later i got a tiny bit of loose skin after losing 15 lbs from a heavily vitamin supplemented + artificial sweetened electrolyte sips across a month long water fast, visible at the 2 week mark.
      In the months after the month fast, when i did several 48-72h fasts spaced out about 3 days apart, i didnt notice any extra loose skin, but i wasnt supplementing with anything other than salt, potassium & magnesium. A year later it appears some of the loose skin tightened.
      Interpret that as you will. I cant say for sure what truly caused my skin to tighten a tiny bit, but it sure doesnt look as baggy as it first did.

    Excelente video!!! Absolutely agree 👍 plus please please before having any surgery tell your doctor openly and honestly about any herbs, drugs, chemicals, medications you may be taking. People forget / ashamed to tell the doctor about test from TRT, they forget about the recreational marijuana or Kratom and other such items. Super important to tell them about blood thinners, even aspirin, and about 'pre-workout" powders at the gym can have high amounts of nitrates, niacin, L-arginine, or MDMA,...or even things like Viagra. Even non-prescription over the counter medication. In many countries, for example here in Columbia, or when I am in Mexico, you would not believe what is sold at the pharmacy without prescription.

    I've lost 126lbs so far. I'm fortunate enough that I have no loose skin under my jaw or neck. It makes me look as though I've lost more weight than what I have.
    I've still got another 50 to 60lbs to lose, but so far, I've got my loose skin starting on my legs and lower belly.
    My other issue is that, because I've been gaining muscle, it looks on the outside with clothes on that I have a muscly chest and small waist, when in fact its still all fat.
    My hope is that the fat just disappears and these areas just go flatter. But they really make me worry.

    On this note before losing weight I had a breast reduction. I loved my surgeon but had to really insist on what I wanted. (Smaller than he wanted to do). I paid out of pocket and he finally told me he would do what I wanted. I was overweight and he wanted to make me symmetrical. I’m so glad I was insistent and he agreed. I later changed to keto/carnivore and lost 40 lbs. I am now symmetrical. I felt no motivation to lose weight before surgery as I always had the chest weight.
    He did a wonderful job and I’m very happy.

  • @norlesh
    @norlesh Рік тому

    I have a question regarding loose skin surgery; all the information and videos I have looked at seem to always be treating patients that have gone from obese to what usually still appears to be on the heavier side of the 'normal' weight range. Consequently the loose skin being removed is attached to a very thick layer of subcutaneous fat providing a very mobile interface between the skin and fascia covering the internal frame, what I would like to know is what things would be like for patients that are able to get there weight down to the lower side of 'normal' or even 'athletic' (around 10%).
    Without all that fat volume and mass providing mobility between the outer skin and the fascia pocketing the underlying muscle how could the excess skin surface area conform to the smaller surface area of the underlying frame besides shrinking?
    The three possibilities I can imagine are
    A) The skin must shrink to conform.
    B) The skin, subcutaneous fat cells, and fascia de-laminates in places to create thin folds of skin disconnected from the fascia.
    C) The skin puckers up or shrivels (in a similar way to the skin covering a specific region of the male anatomy) with the thickness of the remaining intervening subcutaneous fat varying to compensate.

    I lost more than 90 pounds since getting cvid last year. Losing my senses of taste and smell made it easy to eat right and infrequently so I went with it. Now that I’m close to my ideal body weight, though, I have terrible hanging skin on my arms, thighs and tummy. I’m 51 years old and I doubt there’s any hope of it bouncing back on its own. And while I’d love some surgery, it’s just too cost prohibitive. Am I wearing tank tops? No. Shorts only occasionally. Dressing strategically has become my friend and I try to not allow the skin to ruin my happiness about losing the weight but sometimes it wins. Unfortunately.

      Have you looked into doing 1/2 day fasts to promote autophagy/protein recycling? From what I limitedly understand, being in a fasted state promotes the body to do "spring cleaning" and look for damaged/broken protein structures that can be modified into new parts or be used as fuel.
