Scarlett Johansson & Florence Pugh: “You Can’t Look Away” from ‘Black Widow’ | Rotten Tomatoes

- Two years since the release of ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home,’ the MCU is finally returning to theaters with the much-anticipated (and oft-delayed) ‘Black Widow,’ a solo spy adventure for the character made legendary by Scarlett Johansson. In the movie, Natasha is forced to come face to face with the trauma of her past and with the makeshift family of misfits whose motivations remain murky: There’s father figure the Red Guardian (David Harbour); mother figure Melina (Rachel Weisz); and sister of sorts, Yelena (Florence Pugh), whose reconnection with Natasha drives the story, humor, and heart of director Cate Shortland’s movie. Ahead of the film’s release in theaters - and on Disney+ via Premier Access - Rotten Tomatoes correspondent Naz Perez spoke with Johansson about finally giving Natasha her solo film and the importance of it being so female-focused, both in front of and behind the camera. Plus, Pugh, Harbour, Weisz, and co-star O-T Fagbenle talk about creating backstories for themselves and bonds with each other (and why Harbour keeps ending up in Russian prisons), while Shortland details why she wanted to make a movie about trauma and “self-forgiveness” and how inspiration drawn from James Bond to ‘Thelma and Louise’ helped her get there.

Scar Jo’s fighting scenes are all so epic! I’m definitely gonna miss that part of her playing as Black Widow. It’s like she fights with so much fierce while not losing some sass and snap. Different style from Charlize Theron who is also good at fighting scenes.

I watched Black Widow movie on repeat & crying... because this is the last I'm gonna see my fav Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow. I cried & lost interest to finish Endgame once she sacrificed herself but forced myself to finish it because Wanda Maximoff (Scarlet Witch) was in the end fight. My two fav characters & actresses that kept me going for marvel. I get so emotional watching Black Widow...every seconds so precious to me. Ain't nobody could play Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow like Scarlett Johansson. She is perfect

This is the second interview I've seen with this specific interviewer and she's great! She's very genuine in her delivery and asks great questions.
The first Scarlett Johansson movie I ever watched was a film called "The Horse Whisperer", where she actually costarred alongside Robert Redford before he played Alexander Pierce in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. For anyone who has not seen it I highly recommend it, both she and Redford give incredible performances.
Ghost World & Lost in Translation for me… the latter brought me to tears, huge moment in my teens.

I love Scarlett but that Horse Whisperer was pretty boring the montage of them driving across country seemed to last 10 minutes. It probably wasn't that long but come on they just showed the tree for 12 seconds a lot in that movie. I'd probably like it now that I'm old and tired.
Both excellent actors and amazing personalities! In the MCU, Scarlett has passed the baton on quite well to Florence. I'm impressed, loved 'Black Widow', and have enjoyed every one of their projects. Adorable, both!
Don't worry David! He left you and Melina alive for a reason, that wasn't an accident! I'm sure we'll be seeing both of you sooner rather than later! Maybe in a Disney + show, like Hawkeye for example along with Florence Pugh!
I loved them both so much together. It means so much to be that women are shown as supportive to each other. I studied in a technical field and there were not many women in the courses, but we, a group of 6 female students had each other's back, supported each other whenever possible. This meant so much to me and I am happy that we can see supportive women in movies as well. I hate the cliche that women fight each other everywhere. That is not the reality. Thank you for Black Widow :)

Scarlett is literally the best and no one could've played black widow better. I cried so much when she died bc now we will never see Scarlett as black widow again... I do think that Florence/yelena will b a great person to keep Natasha's legacy going tho

That movie was great, whoever says it was bad movie had Corona I guess considering they dont have a taste ! I rooted for Black Widow, Scarlet is just so cute :)
That's why it made the lowest amount of money in mcu history. When everyone doesn't have taste perhaps it's you just lacking judgement

@@Azhureus absolutely every objective fact about the movie says otherwise, it lost millions of dollars, no one went to see it, those who did panned it as bad. Disney is in lawsuits with Scarlett jo for breach of contract and nonpayment and with the theaters for releasing it on Disney+ which they only did so they could hide the real viewership numbers. The only people who liked it are critics that can't be critical or theyll lose their Disney early access and people who have no taste and diminished expectations. The reality is the movie was late, the cgi was subpar and in several scenes the acting is so bad its comical. I think you're just used to Netflix movies and have no idea what a good movie is which is forgivable they don't make alot of good movies anymore.
Ms. Johansson is the quintessential Black Widow - there simply is no other actress out there who can play that role with intensity, commitment, passion. She inhabits every part in all the films she has made. It is so refreshing to see someone like her who has blossomed into a great actress that she is and who is utterly beautiful as well. Wishing her continued success and looking forward to seeing her in other movie genre.
Who else thinks Red Guardian would be a natural fit in a couple episodes of Captain America and the Winter Soldier? Maybe he’s been lying low in Madripoor and Sharon Carter hires him as muscle for a job or something?

The allegory was strong in this movie. Women facing and surviving and literally bringing down the Patriarchy that has always used and abused women as objects, often turning them on each other through socialization so deep as to feel like mind control. And somehow it was also a James Bond movie. Incredible.

Of course this is the most female-centric Marvel film, it's the only one about a hero that escaped a group of female assassins? I guess Task Master could have been a male, but I don't see any way a Black Widow origin story couldn't be female-centric. Not one that wouldn't have destroyed Disney's reputation, & hurt women everywhere that is, & they'd never do that, today anyway...

Oh, O-T! He managed to create a fully-realized human being in his few short scenes. I love that his character has his heart on his sleeve, and the chemistry between Rick and Nat could make for a great team-up. I hope we do see more of him, because I dream of Scarlett doing more Widow, against all odds.
I don't know what numbers this movie pulled but no matter how good or bad, it deserved better. This was a great movie. If the pandemic had not happened, it might have changed history in the entertainment world. I bought it on a "shiny disc" and play it occasionally. It stands up. Writing, acting, filming, editing, it was the best.

The action was INSANE!
This movie should have been made around the time of Civil War or Winter Soldier. Her movie got bumped back repeatedly because of Captain Marvel then again for the pandemic, and that hurt the numbers a lot. Black Widow deserved more from Marvel, so did Scarlett.
The movie was great, so a sequel would be really cool. There could be more stories with the two sisters, and adding other Black Widows or using the Red Guardian again, there are so many possibilities. We also got to meet characters from the Winterguard, which could be amazing as a super hero team as well.
I did think that it was pretty cool that the movie was based on sisters and women bc you don’t see that in marvel movies. I liked seeing the sister thing. My little sister is more like Natasha and I’m more like yelena but it was till cool scenes like the pockets was neat bc I’ve had conversations like that with my little sister. I thought it was a great movie.
