I really enjoy listening to you talk about these games. As someone who has only ever 1CCed very easy shmups, these games always scare me. Like I really enjoy playing them and listening to people discuss them but I convince myself I could never 1cc them. You have helped me be more excited about the prospect :) thank you!
Really happy to hear that! Just as a word of encouragement, I think it gets a lot easier after getting that first hard 1CC. And not necessarily because of improved skills, but because you've overcome that fear of not being good enough at arcade shmups. Not saying you have to force your way through Garegga or anything, just that the mental aspect plays a huge role. Good luck and enjoy the games :)
Watching you play and listening to you inspires me to continue to strive for the elusive 1 cc's. Something about your calmness and lack of ego or pretentiousness really makes it all work for you. Keep it up and thank you for the amazing content.
Glad to hear that, because encouraging other players is really the whole point of this channel. With challenging games like Garegga I just try to enjoy the process, make progress little by little and take breaks when I get frustrated.
Stellar video! As a player who doesn't know much about this game, I like the video format of overview then run. Great commentary style, too -- helpful for novices while also talking strategy and simply being entertaining.
Amazing channel, I love your style! I have been feeling shmup fever recently playing DDP DOJ and Ibara. Now I am ready to try Garegga, I’ve been obsessed with its history and (not-so-secret) secrets! 🤫
Nice clear! Totally agree WRT dismantling Nose Laughin for points, I usually just speed kill it. Also, you were right the first time about the medals dropped from the stage 2 blimp. They're not from the popcorn, but spawned by destroying the turrets on the side of the blimp. There's a technique used by high level players where they use post-respawn invincibility frames to camp on top of the turrets and destroy them while instantly collecting the medals, getting the medal value up earlier. You have to be careful to only destroy one turret at a time so you can collect the medal first and get the next turret's value to increase. I am nowhere near good enough to do this consistently, so I usually just aim for the center and try to avoid dropping medals since Golden Bat can have trouble collecting them if they drop from both sides and the spacing is unfortunate.
Thanks for clearing that up, there's so much going on visually in this section I started to second-guess myself. It's a strangely tricky part sometimes even with Gain's speed, as all the enemy fire and medals can get kinda mixed up. I usually just try to play extra carefully here.
I just bought the game and this is really helpful thank you. I had it years ago on the Saturn but could never get very far. Some great tips here for the 1CC though!
Fantastic guide, thank you for explaining even the very basics. I tried watching a bunch of other videos but they assume way too much. I didn't even know how to chain.
If modern game journalists got their hands on this bad boy they'd call it the dark souls of shmups, and somewhere in the world an arcade owner would shed a single tear.
Congrats on the clear, this is inspiring! I also enjoy playing Gain and will incorporate some of your tips into my play then maybe one day I will get the 1cc too :)
Thanks, glad to hear that! I started out by playing with an arcade stick, because that's what everybody seemed to recommend. At some point, I switched over to pad and noticed I was doing better that way. Maybe it's because my stick (the 8BitDo one) isn't very good or something, but I've also played on original cabs (like Sega Astro City) and I haven't had a "whoa, this is so much better" moment. So for a while now I've been really happy with gamepads. Stick does feel more fun though!
@@hazylevels i can relate to that. I kinda enjoy tinkering with the sticks but haven't really "forced" myself to actually play with them. I am more comfortable with the pads. My favourites are retrobits saturn pad and 8bitdo's m30
Yeah, I don't think there is a clear advantage to any input method. Jaimers is a pad player and look at his clears :) I enjoy the 8Bitdo M30 and SN30 2.4g controllers on pc, and just roll with the PS4 pad when playing on PS4.
@@hazylevels FWIW I love arcade sticks since I learned fighting games on them. I can’t think of playing Street Fighter without one for example. (That’s for me though as there are world champions who play on pad) But now I just got into Garegga and hard shmups in general and I play them on pad. I suppose it’s really a matter of comfort / habit. Whatever you’re the most used to when learning that game genre will probably be the best. 😺
Good stuff! I think the first clears players achieve in this game are always very special and the commentary is a thoughtful touch. Do you want to dip your toes into scoring any?
Thank you! This is a special game for sure, with each run taking a slightly different course. I'm tempted to try getting a letter score, since it's not too far away from my current best. I'm not playing the game right now, but I can see myself returning to it at some point.
I think my rapid fire is broken (M2 PS4), the shot count is higher than the amount I set it to which explodes rank. :( I just go to Controller setting, set the cursor on my shot button, and press Square until the additional icon says "rapid 10", right? The moment I start shooting it says "rapid count 12" and rank goes from 22 to 33. Bummer, guess I'll have to live with 8.
I remember the rapid frequencies being inconsistent for me as well, but luckily there's a workaround. Set up a regular non-rapid shot button and a rapid fire button. At the beginning of the game, try tapping the rapid button lightly (don't hold) until you see your fire rate increase to 10hz in the gadget. Then just use the regular shot button, as it will now fire at a steady 10hz (the firing rate never goes down in Garegga once you raise it). I thought it was a me problem, but guess the port is just weird about this.
@@hazylevelsI’ve been doing exactly what you described. I think the rapid fire configs do work at the correct frequency but they’re out of sync with the game loop so that can easily set higher base frequencies.
Depends on what you want. C = smaller hitbox. ABC = smaller hitbox and increased speed. I choose C because Gain is already pretty fast and too much speed can make micrododging harder.

Well done on starting up an excellent channel hazy. As a fairly nooby shmup player, vids like this are so useful for me! Keep up the great work.
Thank you, hearing that makes me real happy!
Your channel is a hidden gem that I hope doesn't stay hidden for long. Appreciate you and all the content : )
That's very kind, thank you
Holy sheet! I didn't realise garegga had that many secrets!
Gonna definitely replaying it soon with a very different approach
Yeah, it's full of surprises! I'm sure there's tons of other stuff in there I have no idea about.

Awesome, good luck with the game! It's very intimidating at first, but gets easier once you learn rank management and some of the tricks.
Congrats on the clear! Gareggas really something special.
Thank you! It took me a long time to warm up to Garegga, but now I see why it's held in such a high regard. A special game, indeed.
Thx for the strats homie. Also your channel seems dope af, i look forward to watching more vids. Bout to check out you DOJ vid. Cheers 👍
Thanks for checking out the channel and good luck with Garegga!

When the M2 port came out, Eurogamer called it "the mad king of shmups", which I thought was good!
Congrats on the clear, this is inspiring!

Awesome, good luck! Once you get the basics and some of the tricks down, Garegga isn't as scary as it's often said to be. And Gain is a powerhouse :)

I cut my bangs back for garrega also
If you're bangs are too long, it's even harder to see the bullets ^___^
is there a version for the switch? if not i will stick to my saturn original cd.
Unfortunately no, this came out before M2 started doing Switch releases.

Yes, if you have two medals on the screen, and let one drop off the screen but *then* manage to catch the other, you keep your chain 🎖️

Featuring the C button CHEAT.
I love garegga but the bullets hurt my brain.
I know what you mean! Have you tried the colored ones on the M2 port?
