I have the very bad habit of falling in love with my first sketch and end up making it a finished piece... which honestly most often than not it turns out great but I definitely throw away the oportunity of exploring multiple possibilities! Your sketches are all lovely
You can always come back to those ideas even if you’ve already done a finished piece! So many fun ways to approach the same idea 🤩 but I wish I had your confidence to just bulldoze ahead with my initial sketch haha 🤠
I feel you there and this gave me more insight to actually try out exploring the many options of an idea💡and to do multiple color studies bc I do color swatches but never actually did tumbnail color studies to see if I’ll like a different option 😅
@@ChrisHongArtis there something problem in your hands
I really don’t see how sketches are “bad drawings”. Sketches are super important in the creative process for the final product that you want to create. Also, they look really good.
I’m glad my graphic design teacher had us do at least 10 thumbnail sketches before moving on to the roughs, because I’d do a few thumbnails, go “eh I’m good I don’t need to do any more”, wait a bit, and then have more and usually better ideas later that I wouldn’t have gone with if we only had to do 3 thumbnails.
Sketches are not bad drawings. They are so important for exploration, taking visual notes, and working out ideas.
And referencing your own work is a great idea. You can build icons that you use in your work over in over.😊❤️
Yeah I was watching Chris reiterate her idea and it dawned on me that she was gaining muscle memory in the pose so when she went to the final piece she’d be more confident with her lines.
18:55 love to see kitty helping ♥
Love this from the loose sketch in beginning, please don’t say they are bad drawings, because unpolished, they have more soul in it!
Extremely thankful that you made this vid! Your work has been an inspiration to me for the longest time, and I adore your artistic sensibilities and how prevalent they are even in the earliest stages of your works. Recently I’ve been feeling quite unsatisfied with the artwork I create and have taken the time to step back and and really analyze why, and have come to the conclusion that I don’t put enough time into planning out my paintings(I’m quite scatterbrained haha). Im majoring in the arts at FIU and I’m currently taking a painting class and decided it would be best going forward to really start planning out my works, so this video couldn’t have come at a better time! I think this video is one of the most important and valuable you’ve posted to your channel yet, keep being awesome!
Aw I’m so glad you found it helpful, thank you for your comment! This one took me a long time to edit so it means a lot to me that the effort was worthwhile!🥺💖 everyone’s process is different and always evolving so just make sure you’re still having fun and it will guide the way 🫶
OMG I just loved watching the whole process. All your sketches are so lovely. What I love about sketching is, that you always can come back to a sketch you made earlier (if it may be years even) and explore it again or make a full illustration of it. Thank you so much for showing your process, it is very inspirational.
You could always do both and have the mindset that these are two poses from the same "photoshoot", if you will. I like doing that sometimes if I can't seem to choose and then I get all the compositions I like while also adding to my portfolio :D
Thank you! Thank you! THANK YOU CHRIS!! Since leaving my art school in 2020 I stopped making sketches in my visual arts diaries. All of that learning and training to get myself into the habit of making preliminary sketches went down the drain as I continued to draw only sketches that started and ended on one piece of paper. What I'm trying to say is, thank you for posting something that is going to help me kick that habit and go back to drawing preliminary sketches!! I needed this video more than you realised!
i love the word " independent artist " . i usually say self taught artist ,,, but the word independent artist just have a huge power in it.. i will use this ,, mmmm , the thing is me, myself am not near any progress with my art,, i just draw good cause i am doing this for such a long time,, but i not skilled enough to do a proper fullbody .. very lame lol ,, but i really do love your video ,, the thinking you put in each illustration makes me wonder if i can do the same ,,, i realize the diffierce of being an artist as hobby vs being an artist as proffesional .. i really love love your art and your video ,,, i will try to improve ,i swear ,,, and one day i will show it to you ,,
Independant artists are like self-employed. Means they do it as a job. Unless the term changed.
Omg chris hong art new video!!! Hi!!!
Ever since I saw your first piece, the cover of tumble, I fell in love with your work! It’s absolutely amazing how much work you put into an illustration. Your illustrations have the same amount of detail and quality as digital renderings with traditional qualities, it’s really impressive. I always put on your videos in the background while I work on my own pieces and relate a lot about having an ugly stage in my illustrations. I love how honest you are about these types of struggles and it makes me feel better about myself!
Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful video with us, Chris! I really enjoy hearing you talk in detail about your creative process! 💖💖💖 Your illustrations are really magical and inspiring! It's really amazing how carefully you work around your pieces, the whole process behind every concept and idea is just delightful to see! 🥰
I Love seeing all the processes people use, I find it so fascinating ☺☺
Your characters remind of me of Claire Wendling. They look amazing.
It´s pure therapy to watch your process videos, I simply love it! I´m fond of the way you hold your pen as well when you draw! May I ask if you hold it like this on purpose to have better control or is it completely automatic?
I missed your art sooo much :( You're my number one inspiration!
i have ideas for a gouache/watercolors illustration and this came at the right time haha. as i'm currently at the study and planning the composition phase. i've used milanote before but didn't really consider it for planning out drawings.
Te amo sos mi ilustradora favorita. Mí sueño es algún día ser tan creativa como vos

I want to start making bigger illustrations for my portfolio and this video will help me a lot💕
This video in particular is so inspirational for me. Thank you!! 😊
omggg chris hiii❤I realy enjoy this type of content, my watercolors got much better when I watched your videos years ago and learned how to plan the painting and to actually think the brushstrokes before I do it
Woah, loved watching the drawing/sketching process of how u do proportions. Motivated me to practice different poses ^^
this may give me inspiration....for a long while I wanted to draw something very similar ! something that conveys "peace" in the character's pose and wanting her in a field of flowers.
I looooove your illustrations. They remind me of Sarah Kay-cute, joyful, relaxing. Good for the soul! You're an amazing artist, one of the best of our time.
so cool! thank you for sharing all of your process and decision-making! So interesting and so useful! I love your approach to start new drawing everytime. And no to stick to one that seems perfect at a first glance.
this video arrived at the perfect time! right before i started putting a finalized piece on paper. i realized i didn’t explore enough options before settling on the composition and some artistic choices, so i’ll go back to that!
Amazing process! Congratulations.
LOVE the editing of this video and, as always, excited to hear about your process and what inspires you!
thank you so much for sharing your process! its inspiring me to go paint :)
Always checking your insta stories hoping for new videos ...and so happy to hear from you Agian...you are an inspiration ❤
I hope you also filmed the painting process video and it's coming up next! 💙💙
THAT'S NOT A TEST! MINI CHRIS HONG IS BACK!!!
I’m at work rn but I can’t wait to watch this 👀
would love to see the final piece!
It’s always great watching your process, I’m not sure I’d ever have the patience to do your whole process but it’s a great guideline😁
Hope you had a great time in Italy, I got to go last August and loved viewing the Uffizi (?) gallery and eating gelato on the Spanish Steps
THIS is your 100th video on UA-cam!!🎉🎊🎉
Lovely that you went to Italy, did you get a tour through the Coliseum, Palatine Hill and Forum? We went on our honeymoon in November, and the tour was a lifesaver. I've been having half dreams of marble statues and whimsy ever since!
You have a very cool voice I like it it's sounds so good on your videos
Happy Children's Day❤❤pretty girl❤❤
i love yours videos ❤❤❤l
By the time I’d get through all those steps to make a painting I’d be so over doing that picture I wouldn’t even want to draw it out or paint it and be moving onto something new.
🖤🖤🖤
Have you tried painting with ink I’ve been having the same issues with watercolor that you mentioned in your “Ugly stage” video and it really helped with with my confidence in watercolours
Miss you so much😭
I really struggle with cleaning up my line work. All the overlapping lines in a sketch suggest features quite well, but then when I have to commit to definitive lines I struggle and it often loses the gesture or expression I was trying to capture - do you have any recommendations?
❤
Tutorial please 🙏
This video is sooo helpful for me.
I love your content 💕💕💕
And I heard that you will do a colaboration with craftamo, is that true?
Yes it’s true!👀 I’ll be sharing more info on that soon!!🤠
Omg I’m so excited 😆💞💞
