Far and away the best tech reviews on youtube, products that people without huge funds or lack of sense will buy, reviewed with honesty, comedy and a good dose of northern scepticism, keep it up.
It is comforting knowing that the tech guy reviewing cutting edge dash cams complete with all the complicated specs has an old turntable and 8track player in his living room. 12:27. That's called keeping it real.
What happened to the sound at around 5:00? Lol happens to us all. Really appreciate the time you take to do these. Keep up the good work!!
Great review as always. Glad to see you got your old intro back.
Also a thank you from the neighbors for including a link to the NL ebay.
Excellent review again! And I think leaving the audio when driving was a good idea. You can still hear you speaking and it shows how it really works. Good job again.
A good review of this product. Well done!!! I just bought the camera so I will let you know how it goes. I bought it for professional reasons "BIG" truck driver. I've had 2 possible major accidents in the past 2 weeks and the thought of having no witness for me scares the h out of me. It was more than I expected in $$$ but if it works as good as you have demonstrated it was worth the $$..
Thank you this link from eBay is much cheaper then the US official DoD distributor
AMAZING VIDEO! This guy is great at making videos. I've been debating on what camera to get and thanks to this video im going to buy the DOD430W. Thanks for such a detailed review.
I have one and love it! BTW the light.... If for when there is an accident, you can take the dash cam off and use it as a camera to take pics of the car or crash site and if it's dark the light will give you a better picture. It's not meant to be used when you are using it as a normal dash cam..
Awesome video and review. I just unpacked my 430W and am getting ready to mount it. Also bought a 300W for the wife's car. Plan on mounting mine behind the mirror on my Ford F250 Super Duty...it hopefully will be fairly unnoticeable. Really don't care to watch the screen while driving, so having it up out of the way not a problem. Will post a review once I get it up and running. Thanks again.
Ok, so this is the second dashcam I have bought based on your review. I really like the low light image quality and the Mac software. I have to say that I got it from the DOD-TECH.CO.UK link, who had an Xmas special for £149 including shipping. It arrived the next day, so excellent service from them. Be advised, there are several sites selling DOD products, that are not authorised to do so and are not supported by DOD for warranty, etc. There is a list on the dod-tech site of these non approved vendors. Thanks again for posting all these.. not so sure your fans will allow you to step out of the lime-light and stop doing the reviews...
Matt, as always a fantastic review. I know I'm getting a bit bored with car cameras (since I've bought about everything you recommended, including 2 Mobius, so I'm anxious to switch my purchases over to other kinds of things you recommend. You're doing doing the absolute best, most thorough, and most valuable reviews on the net, hope to see many more!
I'm glad you understand why I'm giving them a break - as soon as I realised that the dash-cams have now reached the point where you can buy a good one for £40 -£100 that can shoot quality HD video, day or night.... then any more reviews would just be variations on a theme.
Excellent video. The only thing I would like to mention, is that Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) is actually more helpful in bright sunny conditions, rather than low light conditions (although it can help there too). You could consider it to be a bit like the video equivalent of High Dynamic Range (HDR) in photography. The aim is to compensate for a tiny sensor’s inability to cope with the contrast between the brightest and darkest areas of a scene.
The only down side, is that WDR is usually achieved at the expense of shutter speed . This won’t typically effect frame rate or be visible in a moving image, but if you were to pause a video in order to read the number plate of a car travelling in the opposite direction - you might stand a better chance of being able to read the number if WDR was turned off (due to the faster shutter reducing motion blur).
Looking at the specs of the camera, the good low-light performance is probably due to the f1.6 lens, which is a pretty impressive spec.
Thanks again for the great videos, they really were helpful!
Techmoan, another Great review.... I always look forward to your reviews. I think your sense of humor is great.
Good vid. We appreciate your hard work.
Hi Techmoan, you do the best reviews and trust your judgement. Just wondering how you would rate this dashcam, Nextbase Dash Cam DUO. Having too many near misses on the road and need a dashcam that I can take out and put in different cars. Thanks Diane
How would you compare this to the recent VF2+ in terms of user-friendliness and build quality? I've watched the source files, but do you feel that the night time recording of one was better than the other?
i have question about A8 dash cam or hd 0801.do you have to push record button every time to record video or you can set when you start your car it stars automatically recording video.please let us know that function.thank you
peterd 1585. I have a dod LS430 dash cam that i have lost manual. it just comes up mass storage and refuses to do anything else. help please.
When it made another file and continued recording your audio in car overlapped for a couple seconds, you said the same thing twice so it is not as smooth as the Vica TF2+ camera one?
hi great videos :), just a question do you still use the The Mini 0801 in your car, is it holding up well im interested in buying one as it seems perfect for what i need (price range, functionality, quality etc) i ask as there a few mixed reviews on amazon, or could you recommend something similar or better, sorry for the noob question
Much thanks to you good sir for your brilliant review. I have spent quite a bit of time sussing out this company/unit this morning and because of your learned insight I will be definitely going back to the Toronto Auto Show this week to purchase the 430W directly from the DOD Tech Canada chaps at a "show special" price with a bonus 64gb SD tossed in as well. I'll be posting the "best" of motorway mayhem in the future.
Hello.
First, thank you for your great reviews.
Can you please advice on a good car recording camera that dont have a built in battery.....the one that i have now had a built in battery and when it is dead you cant replace it ...and yoi cant work with the camera again.....cant set date and such ...every time you stop the car the power is off and the settings are gone.
What are the advantages or dis advantages of 3 vs 5 min loop recordings or any of the timed loop settings?
I would like it to just keep recording with out picking minute intervals until it runs of card space and start over from that point or is it easier to find the time frame when needed by selecting timed loops.
Hello Techmoan , Can you please review the INNOVV camera ?
I'm a bit confused and can not decide between the Mobius and this new cam .
Thanks
Hay Techmoan
I am thinking of getting a dash cam for my car. Only issue is I will like to leave it up behind my mirror and not take it down and hide it under the seat or something. I don't want some guy looking in the car and seeing it then breaks the window and takes it. What will you say is the best way to hide the camera so no one will see it on the outside?
GREAT VIDEO. "THANKS" from British Columbia Canada..
I know this is an older video so I hope you ( or someone else see's my question and can answer it ) are able to answer. I am buying this camera from an offline Auction house and there are no instructions with it. My questions is " Is there a limit on the size of card I can use with this camera ? " . The reason I ask is because my current dash cam won't let me use a card bigger than 32G and I'd like to use my 64G or my 132G .
Thanks in advance and again, thank you for such great instructions.
Cheers.
i just order mine today when it comes and go i get the micro disk how do i format it ?
Hi Techmoan,I recently ordered a dvr 027 and was wondering if a class 10 micro sd with the SD adapter would work
So is this camera your top recommendation car dash camera?
Would be great if you could have some sort of your own personal ranking of all dash cams you have reviewed.
Thank you, keep up the great work! I LIKE
I am confused here. You say it can record for 2 3 or 5 minutes and then loop over itself. Or you can set it not to loop. If you set it not to loop and you fill the entire card, aren't these things suppose to loop at that point in any case?
Great review man - you're very good in doing that.
Keep up good work !
Good review ! There definitely seems to have been some improvements in the car dash cam and action camera market. I wonder about other form factors such as "spy pens" and so forth, are there any newer models with better performance ? Thanks.
Please could you help me. I want to buy a dash cam 2016 budget one, could you tell me which one is good and where to buy it? Thank you.
Will DOD dashcam power up with the power cable if the battery inside is dead?
Great review Techmoan...keep them coming please
Any difference between the LS430W and the TioTech GT800+GPS?
Love the new intro!
Same
Very nice review as usual.
(Were those 8-track tapes I saw on your entertainment center shelf? It's been quite a few years since I've seen those.)
I'll explain all in an upcoming video.
Looks like the Nextbase Incar cam, 202 - 402 .. is it the same or a copy?
Well done my friend,Excellent review,Thanks for all your hard work....
well done in getting this up in just 6 days, it must take absolutely ages to edit all that stuff together so well :-)
I started filming this video on the 22nd November, It's a lot of work, and it can take it's toll, but it's satisfying to see the video when it's finished.
Techmoan Well done, Mr. Techmoan.
Can you shut the display off? Or adjust the brightness?
hi techmoan. I was wondering if you can do a long term review. Maybe from a camera that you use every day or a longer period of time.
Can you do a review on LS300W? It seems as if the voice recorder is better with LS300W than 430W. I love your reviews, I would be very grateful if you are able to do that review. Thanks again and please keep up the good work.
By far the Best brand of dash cam I've bought . I have the 300. But it's been a great cam.
As always and excellent review!
Many thanks :-)
Awesome review as always, thanks
I really enjoy your reviews even though I really have no interest in buying anything you review... except maybe this. What are the operating temperature ranges. Was wondering about mounting it on my motorcycle and I ride all winter.
Thanks for the review Just ordered one :-)
How can we get on your referral list of dash cam suppliers? Located in Canada! Thanks
I'd imagine that the LED is for if you get into an accident you can do a walk-around of the damage with it, even in the dark for photo/video evidence of it.
Would love to know where I can buy this, in the UK, for £115? The only sellers are showing £160 and £170. BIG difference!
Hello Sir. I enjoy your reviews!! Does this cam have live video stream out? I am looking for a cam like this to mount on a multirotor for fpv. Or do you have a point of view on a car cam that would work well for fpv? I like the idea of dual cams ang gps. But I dont want to spend alot of money because I crash alot. Answer me If you have time, I would enjoy knowing your opinion, Thanks for your time, Have a wonderful day. Ronnie in Nebraska USA
I bought one, but the car charger usb lead is too slack. it keeps falling off
Didn't think your budget would extend to a DOD, regards the OSD might be a complaint of mine from my previous model as I moaned because whenever I switch off or press a button it enables or disables a feature that sometimes I don't realise (Like sound, if you press the record button on mine for to short a period it mutes the mic)
I've bought 5 of these now but the Nextbase 402G version, but had a problem fitting to a customers car, fitted one in the back window and plugged into 12v plug in the boot, start engine and the cam starts as it should do. Fitted front cam but when the engine is started the cam does not automatically start recording, did a factory reset but still no different. Power is getting to the cam as it will start recording if you switch the cam on manually by pressing the button, cam turns off automatically when the engine is shut down. The car in question is a 65 plate Citreon Picasso Executive HDi, Anyone got any ideas. Thank you.
Faulty camera. Send it back, my front facing 402g (2010 Toyota Yaris) is fine.
Nokia Here Drive is very accurate for speeds, on my HTC 8x Windows Phone, it has a beep noise when you go over the speed but you can turn it off. Have not tried to use the 8x as a car cam yet, would need to find a nice mount for it.
Always interested to see what new visual features you're going to include these days Matt, I liked it!
If you were to categorize your good night performing cams for a budget (no LCD) which is the best value that you have found to date?
As usual, . . . Thanks for posting!
For a screen-less cam I'd probably go for the Mobius.
Techmoan I have the Mobius (based on your recommendation :)
but is that the 'best' night performance in a screenless (or budget) camera?
I use it for areal video because of it's quality/weight ratio (which I would say has no equal)
But when it starts getting dark, it really shows up on Video.
If you say there is no current alternative, then I'll believe you . . . you would know :)
I haven't tested any tiny cheap cams with good low light yet, but there may be something I don't know about.
Techmoan This is identical to my Nextbase 402g pro if you google it they look exactly the same with the same software it comes with windows & mac So hopefully my camera is as good in quality
Great review, thanks!
How do you install the mac software? My mac book pro retina has no cd drive and I don't know how to run the .rar file on a mac. Thanks.
You can download the software from their website
www.dod-tech.co.uk/downloads.html
Macs should extract RAR files without any additional software (I think).
If they don't use can download UnrarX www.unrarx.com
Nice audio gear Techmoan!
Thanks to Techmoan zi bought this dash camera. I needed a camera for mainly night video recordings. DOD LS430W performs great in low light. Check out a few only vids.
This review helped me purchase this dashcam. I bought the cam on the eBay account recommended by TechMoan which is eprance. Eprance is blacklisted by DOD and I do not recommended buying from them. I received my product which did not work properly with my microSD card and errored multiple times. There was also no feature to change to MPH as reviewed. Upon contacting DOD support they would not support the product due to the blacklisted seller of ePrance. I had to send my dashcam back to the eBay seller and purchase directly from DOD. Upon receiving the REAL camera from DOD, it worked perfectly, all options were available and it supports my microSD card perfectly.
I recommend this dashcam highly but recommend purchasing it from a real DOD approved reseller.
Do the Garmin 20. I want to know if they're any good
Great review (like always)
Hi Techmoan...Great reviews. I recognize some of the streets. Are you near Burscough.
Anyway, The Nextbase range in Halfords look the same; are they?
Steven Jarman I think they might be.
This is also called a Nextbase 402g Professional. Halfords sell it!
I recommend the "non" branded version of this one. You can get it for around €90 and it's just as good :)
Thats a really good quality camera!
Buy a dash cam with Gold :D
I like your humor !
Enjoyable as always Sir!
Inspired and impressed as I was by this camera, I had a look at DOD's website, they've got this LS430W and their VHR3 (complete with easy to spot through the windscreen garish green decals). I'm wondering why one company would produce two dash cameras at the same price point? which do they consider is the best? and why the devil didn't they send you both cams to test side by side?
I'm really glad they didn't send me both...I wouldn't have enough time to test them. I've done enough in-depth dash-cam reviews for a while.
Yeah I bet you're sick of the sight of them lol
In a world diverse in gadgets that we are in you don't want to get pigeon holed in just being this countries foremost expert on Dash Cams. Isn't there anything new in like that Rollie kitchen thing you reviewed coming out you could tackle?
Great review Techmoan. I've been strongly considering this Dashcam until I found it only has motion sensor mode for when the car is parked, which could cause severe battery drain if parked in a busy area. What is the best alternative with a parking mode that records only after a bump?
I just went out and bought a external power supply have not tested yet. Will let you know in near future it is a rechargeable Duracell unit.
Hey Techmoan, love your videos, but the "Wide Dynamic Range" isnt to do with night time at all. Its all about the difference between light and dark areas. The higher the dynamic range, the more everything is in the correct exposure. The lower the DR, then you get a problem where the daytime sky is blown out of exposure, but the dark road is underexposed, and the image is really contrasty.
This is basically the Nextbase 420G, which I ordered from Halfords online last night. Then I saw the LS460W, which has improved buttons, menus and night vision. I ordered this tonight lol. If it is reliable I will return the Halfords 402G
+Nick prosser Hi, what did you end up keeping.
David Conway Still got the Dod460W. Incredible footage and the improved button layout is much better
+Nick prosser Cheers Nick, thanks for the prompt response.
David Conway no worries. I bought mine from eBay, UK seller.
The link on eBay for the us says the listing has ended do you have an updated link?
Thanks for the info - I've update the links now.
Is It possible to have the speed shown on the video, and then remove it in the software in the event you need it for evidence. Or add it to the video with their software or is it one of those cameras that either has it on or not, and that's that?
I think if you turn the stamp off in the camera, you may be able to add it later using the Registrator Viewer software...but this isn't something I'm too familiar with.
great reviews 👍
i've just purchased the Nextbase 402G (which is similar to the DOD LS430 i believe). my question is, how do you seamlessly combine the .mov clips into one long clip? and which program do you use to edit your videos? i use a Mac. thanks
I can't help for the software but what you need to do is cut the first second or so as the clip "jumps" from one clip to the next. This works for me and my 402g
Contact Nextbase and ask for the better software.
Hi Mr Techmoan, do you know of anywhere that sells sticky pad mounts for these cams please, buggared if I can find anywhere. Oh setting the cam to 'cloudy' conditions will normally 'Warm' or 'Saturate' the playback foottage. Regards. Rob. I must add I bought this cam' through you're recommendation, very good. I think you meant 402G and not 420G.
+Rob Beard search for 3M VHB on eBay and you'll find plenty.
Thank you very much for taking the time to reply to me, much appreciated, cheers, Rob.
Quick tip, get a curved scalpel blade and very, very gently scape the white writing from the front of the cam'. can hardly be seen from the outside then unless in blazing direct sunlight.
Black tape works better
Can you tell me what cable I need to power my nextbase 402g camera so I can watch it on my tv please ,also where can I get one from Thanks Dave
Just a normal usb mini charger, something like an old phone/camera/tablet charger.
Not something that plugs into the computer, but a normal wall plug that plugs into the mains
Aiptek has software like that they with there G Mouse addon for GPS.
question: one thing you pointed out in your review of the Mini-0801 was the wide angle lens gave the impression objects in front of you were farther away than they actually were. After watching this review, I believe this cam doesn't suffer from this, but can't be sure since it hasn't arrived yet. Can you confirm?
Thanks so much for your reviews. You're the reason I watch youtube =)
You are right, because this camera doesn't have as extreme a Wide Angle lens as some, things look closer to how they do when you are driving.
Can you turn off the GPS and motion detection settings?
Yes
Ok so I have had the Ls430w for a week and I am having issues with it !!!!! It freezes in mid video. Is anyone having this issue. I reset it once and it worked for a day but is freezing up again GRRRRR!!!! Not to impressed so far. Great when it is working.
Awesome as ever.
And btw nice tube amplifier. ;-)
It's a hybrid amp Tube Pre-amp and solid-state power amp - always wanted a tube amp and this is as close as I could get on my budget - it sounds great. It's a MISTRAL DT-307A.
www.mistralaudio.co.uk/DT-307A.html
I had an old radio from about the 50's I think that also had tubes inside. I never forget that great sound it had. Not loud, but it lived.
And again thanks a lot for your gread reviews and tests. You're awesome.
Sorry I'm not sure i caught this is the review.
Can you set it too turn off the screen while you are driving with the camera recording?
Thanks for the amazing reviews
Yes you can.
Awesome. Ty
quality is fantastic.
More dash cam. Crazy :-)
hi, im a truck driver looking for a Dashboard camera ... we drive 24 hours a day so we need some good night quality, 32-64gb Pref Sd card ... I guess the size of the camera doesnt matter since we have a big windshield...
the most important thing is the image quality during day and night... the fonctionnality of buttons or quality of the Lcd Screen doesnt matter to us. Since the big rig have a lot of noise the sound is not a must. If i could use the cam to film or take picture of some nice landscape outside the truck it could be really interesting.
ty in advance for your suggestion,
regards, pat
This is probably the best all round Dashcam I've reviewed.
DOD LS430W dash camera: Georgio was asking:
1.) Sandisk is not the best micro SD card. If it works, then OK, but try another brand if you have a problem.
2.) Load the software from the little CD that came with the camera onto your computer.
3.) Plug the camera into your computer using the USB cable.
4.) "Mass Storage" appears on the camera.
5.) Press button #14, or the button on the top of the camera (the button nearest the edge of the camera).
6.) computer should recognize the camera and show a folder.
7.) Open the folder and you will see files (assuming you have recorded).
8.) Open the software and play your videos.
10.) No "Zoom" feature available.
11.) Set camera to 1080P and leave it there = best results.
HOPE THIS HELPS!!
Best.................SHUMBA

So, What DVR actually gives you that option ?
I personally would really love to have a video-recording...watching it on a screen. Why ?
Coz simply i'll change my dashboard's stuff with some 10" Tablet / Laptop and would freely watch what's going on ;)
...NOT on a 2.5" DVR "monitor", but on a 10 (or so) inch Screen ;-)
I found that it can record and give a live viewfinder over AV leads, just not HDMI. I'd really recommend looking out of your windscreen/windshield instead though - it's a much bigger view and the quality is so good you would swear you were there.
actually, it has a battery, says so on the box, 3.7V 500mah, stop video @0:36 500mah isn't much, that's why it relies on the power cord. nice review though!
What's the Toyota you're driving? It looks like it's got quite a funky interior.
Iq
After watching this review i went ahead and bought one, i have to admit its a step up from the last cheap one i had. (genius DVR-HD550) My complaint about it would be easy of access to the SD Micro card to remove to view on the computer. I am not a believer in disturbing the camera once mounted. So for me i rather remove the SD Micro card and its a pain in the ass to get out and put back in. A better location for it would have been on the bottom then the side. But outside of that quirk its a solid dash cam and love the fact it will except a 64gb stick for 10 hours of video :).
Matt In Illinois Yes the DOD would be like that hooked up to a computer, mine does the GPS np so sounds like either a knock off or a defective one.I still find the device has issues on cloudy days in auto mode for the picture settings its a bit dark on cloudy days and to switch it to cloudy is a pain in the butt.
BK Higgins I agree about the Micro SD card, but I use the top of a pen to click it in and out. It's really easy that way. Use the long bit you clip to your shirt. As for the cloudy days. Mine works fantastic! It was really no different to what I was seeing with my own two eyes. Oh I have mine set to auto and white balance set to 0.
amigo como eu faço p compra uma dessa
No negative about not having seamless playback between sections? That would be a deal breaker for me and something that I thought most recent car cams have that fixed.
I'm really not sure why you think it's there is a gap - you are the second person to think this - but I took the time to show how the clips fit together at 05:50 with an onscreen demonstration whilst I was talking - each clip overlaps the next by a fraction of a second so nothing is lost.
Techmoan Not worried about loss, worried about jerkiness as it went back 1/2 second. (or less, but definitely noticeable). A lot of your recent cameras that you've reviewed have no "rollback" between clips, and that's why I was mentioning. It makes it a lot smoother to join clips without much editing if there is no gap at all. BTW, love your reviews and always look forward to the next one. Thanks for all your effort.
I understand now. I suppose they are thinking more about security than the possibility of the footage being edited together.
Nice camera
The DOD brand with their LSxxxW models is the more expensive (about $50 more) than the generic versions sold under GTxxxW models. Only the software is slightly different between the DOD and generic brands, while hardware remains the same with the same F1.6 optics that work beautifully in both daylight and night time situations.
Amazon.com had (and still has) the GT550W sold for $115 USD without the GPS (not necessary) which if I had problems can return hassle free back to Amazon without any problems. Can't complain... using it daily and will buy another for my wife's car.
I just discovered your videos and subscribed immediately. Great and informative.
