The vast majority of jiu jitsu videos on UA-cam are borderline insulting to even a novice level practitioner's intelligence. This absolutely includes black belt "instructors." There is almost always a clear lack of understanding of the technique shown, not even a clue of the underlying principles and/or it's just something being regurgitated (poorly) for the 1000th time. This video is not that!! Your presentation is insightful, useful, original and you clearly have an understanding of the underlying principles. I especially enjoyed how you explained it from both player's perspective. The format was informative as well, i appreciate the examples that were given along with the explanation. Thank you so much for sharing. Liked, saved, subscribed!!
You have a fantastic combination of teaching principles and techniques. I also like how you teach the concept/technique from both the offensive and defensive perspectives - very helpful! Thank you!
I get so much more from your concept and principle videos, opposed to watching tutorials or how to do this sweep or that submission. You tube is full of “how to” videos but I prefer more of these “why too” and “when to” clips. Great content!
I think this was a very well laid-out video. Often I feel video instructors who are doing a live performance get distracted by possible "what if" questions or resets. But this format allows you to discuss the concept freely, and let the techniques enhance the concept, instead of the other way around.
Why: "Because it's much easier to pivot and rotate since there is only one point of contact on the mat." This really made sense to me, Jon! Thank you. Also, I like this video format slightly more since it caters to advanced players who just need to see an example and to novice players who need more of a thorough breakdown. Either way this format should make it easier for you to do less editing over time which will increase the amount of content you can produce!
Yeah exactly I can focus on the talking component and explaining and I am starting to have some help me with editing so they can add in reference videos and examples.
This indeed instantly changed my Jiu Jitsu! Tried this concept out by just trying to stifle attacks for as long as possible. Did this across two days of training and it was money all the way. Any failure was due to my inability to switch my hips fast enough or fish for hooks effectively. More practice, obviously, but definitely feel this has momentum
I like it all.... this was another thing I thought I knew, but but had less of an understanding than I thought and is something I want to intionally focus on making sure I'm doing
Your content is so immediately applicable and relevant. Concepts explained through techniques in sparring clips is very helpful, i wish i could reference the material on the mat. At my school, i had two big ass flat screens mounted up high above the mirrors -i wish i had these insightful lessons playing during open mat. I know it sounds ridiculous and nothing against the people i work with presently, but i just want to improve like everyone does. People who criticize that are full of shit. I can be my own person and develop my own style ... but having clear guidance can up my game and progress me way faster than having to figure these things out on my own. Sure, i would eventually learn these things through experience but some of us dont have 40 years left to gain so much insight. Thank you, sincerely, for all the incredible work your putting into these lessons. Your students are lucky to get to train with you. OSS!
Yeah absolutely principles are so powerful! Just takes a long time to distill then down into some small digestible ideas like this. So when I find one I like to drop it in a high quality way
@@JonThomasBJJ I think that would make a great flavour and vibe for the video. :) I played some background music from Spotify while running the video right now, and it turned out very good. I think that would be great to add some music to your videoes for sure!
How I picture it: This videos are more high level overview and a summary of a certain topic, like the lessons learned after a chapter, whereas the videos on the matt are detailed to a specific situation/s. I like both. Great insights and help. Happy new years Jon!!
I think I had been doing this some but didn't realize about the changing pivot points being a key for sweeps. There were definitely times where I was flat and felt I couldn't really get someone off balance. Definitely going to try to focus on this more.
It never fails Jon, your videos transform my game tremendously, just by changing how I see the game. I wish I knew this concept years ago! Mindblowing stuff!
Both are good and beneficial. Mixing it up also helps us (the audience) against becoming bored with the monotony of the same-style videos, even though we may still be super interested in the content.
I enjoy your content. Do more videos at home! I keep getting stuck in closed guard however I haven’t seen that you use the close guard much. I’m guessing you’ve evolved.
Yes, I liked it. Why not combine both? This format is great for an overview, the mat-only-videos could then provide the exact details (for example: concept overview this video ("flat video"), passing overview the one with the knee-pinning a few weeks ago (mat video), guard retention overview (mat video) and so on).
I think the format is really great! You can fully focus on talking and commenting and tweak the comment afterwards, which should improve the quality for us. Thank you, God bless!
I might set one up, will let everyone know if I do. For right now I have a website if anyone want to support I have plenty of products and offers on there as well
I really appreciate your content. Being able to articulate concepts is so important. In my opinion one of the most important aspects to learning and developing your own style. Keep up the good work on your channel.
I used to think that in De La Riva, everything was about distance and straightening the legs but keeping the knees close to the body is super useful. Thanks for sharing.
Both distance and side tilt matter a lot for dlr. if you are too close it can be hard to get the hook strong as well. Sometimes you just can’t get the hook then going to hip or key master is great option
Dear Jon, I need to say first thank you very much for the great videos, I saw many of your videos in UA-cam and your website and it's really improved my bjj🙏🏻 Secondly I personally would rather the long videos than the short ones and it makes better sense to me, also both this kind and those ones on the mat are perfect, thanks again.
I love this format of video. You are able to focus on the concept you want to get across during and after shooting the clips versus having to get both the narrative and the clip correct. Thank you for all the content you create for the jiu-jitsu community. I've benefited greatly and look forward to meeting you next time your in Vancouver Canada
You know when someone explains something apparently complicated in such simple, clear terms you wonder why you found it complicated in the first place? Well, this content is precisely that, great stuff as always!
Thanks so much buddy I appreciate it a lot! That’s really what I’m going for to to make the content super high quality but really digestible and easy to follow for all.
Thanks buddy! Gonna try to do a good mix of mat videos and these kind. I think with mat video it’s easier to be quick and concise these are useful for longer principle type videos.
Normally this information is given in Private Lessons or Seminars, Professor Thomas just gives it for free. This is free gold!
Well doing it this way effects a lot more people so it has been great to share and see how it affects people.
Your content is phenomenal. We’re lucky to have you.
Thanks so much! Means a lot to have the support. The channel has really changed my life so much. So as much as I help you guys I thank you back
Agreed.

love how you teach broad principals that translate across the board. Really helps to pull things together.
You have a fantastic combination of teaching principles and techniques. I also like how you teach the concept/technique from both the offensive and defensive perspectives - very helpful! Thank you!
No problem! With this one it was fun because there is so many aspects to it worth sharing.
This kind of BJJ principle videos are extremely helpful even for senior level blackbelts... Keep them coming, Jon... Many thanks!
Yeah they really help you in so many other positions. Hope this one makes a big difference for you!
I really appreciate your principal driven, holistic approach to jujitsu. Keep up the good work!
Thanks a lot it’s fun for me to break down and challenges me to learn and evolve my own understanding.
I get so much more from your concept and principle videos, opposed to watching tutorials or how to do this sweep or that submission. You tube is full of “how to” videos but I prefer more of these “why too” and “when to” clips.

Yeah plus there is so much more to keep track of with partner camera man, noise ect. So this was a lot of fun to make.
This is gold.
You really explain Bjj moves very well! Great understanding of the body mechanics involved. Keep it up.... MB 62 yr old BJJ black belt
I really loved this video, often watching videos you don't retain much information, but this was very well explained and easy to grasp.
Really appreciate this content - got a new baby so not able to train. Looking forward to applying this!
Conceptual lessons like this , in my opinion, are worth way more technique videos. Thank you very much!!
Why: "Because it's much easier to pivot and rotate since there is only one point of contact on the mat." This really made sense to me, Jon! Thank you. Love the example footage combined with the spoken content
This is a good format. It allows for more a context and details. It’s an excellent supplement to the mat videos for technique instruction.
This indeed instantly changed my Jiu Jitsu! Tried this concept out by just trying to stifle attacks for as long as possible. Did this across two days of training and it was money all the way. Any failure was due to my inability to switch my hips fast enough or fish for hooks effectively. More practice, obviously, but definitely feel this has momentum
this format is actually really helpful.
I liked this new format of talking through the concept while using the video as examples
This format is awesome brother! I prefer concepts explain in this format. Thank you.
Great concept! Bloopers are my fave. I like this new format. I vote for it's continued use + bloopers 😎
The bloopers will be continuing, there are plenty of them to be posted lol
I like it all.... this was another thing I thought I knew, but but had less of an understanding than I thought and is something I want to intionally focus on making sure I'm doing
When you deeply integrate it into your game it makes a tremendous difference!
I'm a new white belt, and this "bjj concept" videos are the most useful I've ever seen. Thanks man.
Love your general principle oriented content which is fantastic for developing a systematic understanding of bjj. Lovelovelove ❤!
This was great.
There are three things that people need to focus on to improve their jiu-jitsu: fundamentals, fundamentals, and fundamentals.
Your content is so immediately applicable and relevant. Concepts explained through techniques in sparring clips is very helpful, i wish i could reference the material on the mat. I really like this style of video! Super helpful to have the different examples as you’re talking
The illustration of your talking points with film helps a lot! Thank you!
Thanks it is a great tool for me to be able to make more valuable talking content.
Very cool video. I like the format. learning a single principle often trumps many single techniques.
Yeah absolutely principles are so powerful! Just takes a long time to distill then down into some small digestible ideas like this. So when I find one I like to drop it in a high quality way
Love this videos about principles and concepts, incredibly useful and easy to learn!!!
I really liked this format for the video! Made it easy to follow your examples and it had a great vibe.
Good job! :)
Appreciate it! Think I should add background music or leave it as is?
@@JonThomasBJJ I think that would make a great flavour and vibe for the video. :) I played some background music from Spotify while running the video right now, and it turned out very good. I think that would be great to add some music to your videoes for sure!
Very helpful, thank you.. I find these videos talking about principals especially helpful.
I love these videos, especially for when I can't be watching it the whole time and have to listen to audio
Yeah I’m trying to make them a bit more pure watchable
How I picture it: This videos are more high level overview and a summary of a certain topic, like the lessons learned after a chapter, whereas the videos on the matt are detailed to a specific situation/s. I like both. Great insights and help. Happy new years Jon!!
What a fantastic teacher! Keep teaching bro your good at what you do
Thanks so much! Encouraging to have all the support!
Great format for an instructional imo. Love your content man. Thanks for putting it out there.
These types of videos are the best! It would work with just you talking as well, but editing it with rolling/comp clips makes it next level
Thanks trying to do more talking videos about big ideas then use reference video like this to help give context
Content is on Point.
Great for Us old guys on the mats, great info as always Sir, Looking forward to learning from You face to face in March again. ❤
I really, really like this format.
This is such a great channel. Totally underrated! Thank you Jon
Thanks buddy! Hoping to change that with the content over the next year!
I wish I knew it too! Some of these small ideas have such powerful effects on so many components of your game.
Great channel love the variety in teaching methods
this style of video is brilliant!
Thank you. I love your information distribution and organization.
Both are good and beneficial. Mixing it up also helps us (the audience) against becoming bored with the monotony of the same-style videos, even though we may still be super interested in the content.
Yeah I think it needs to have diversity in style of video. Really gonna work hard on UA-cam in 2023!
This is pure gold.
Wow, seriously thank you. This helps soo much and exactly why I love your content more than the other bjj content creators.
Really honored to be your favorite Bjj creator. Will keep working at it and making it better.
Thanks! I have issues to off balance my opponents in open guard so this video was juste perfect!
Yeah side tilt helps a ton with it!
Thank you! Definitely about to go try this
I enjoy your content. Do more videos at home! I keep getting stuck in closed guard however I haven’t seen that you use the close guard much. I’m guessing you’ve evolved.
Closed guard is great! Always like using it. I have an older video on opening closed guard it’s worth checking out
Narrating over the examples and perhaps narrating live rolls helps me a lot. Thanks for what you do for the BJJ community.
Thank you! That is amazing and very useful. Such videos are more important then technical details. Go on, please.
Yeah principle are the best! Just hard to consistently discover new ones, sometimes takes months of training to discover one major key idea like this.
These concept videos are extremely helpful
Thanks! More coming!
I love this format 👍 thank you sir for your great knowledge
Thank you, this was a very useful concept and explanation.
Great video.. I really liked the format, and the conceptual stuff..
Yes, I liked it. Why not combine both? Thank you professor
This is a great format I would watch more!
Will be doing more soon!
I think the format is really great! You can fully focus on talking and commenting and tweak the comment afterwards, which should improve the quality for us. Thank you, God bless!
I like all the content... and this new format is great. You should do a patreon so people can contribute monthly (or whatever).
I might set one up, will let everyone know if I do. For right now I have a website if anyone want to support I have plenty of products and offers on there as well
This is the highest quality instructional content I know of for BJJ
Thanks so much buddy means a lot! Just gonna keep working harder to be better at the videos and always evolving the craft
It's nice to have an overall explanation of the concept 😁😁
Thanks happy you enjoyed it
Thank you! I love these!! This style video is quite compatible with my learning style.
Happy to hear that!
I really appreciate your content. Being able to articulate concepts is so important. In my opinion one of the most important aspects to learning and developing your own style. Keep up the good work on your channel.
Means so much to have this level of support! Thank you so much!
I’m a fan of this format!
Thanks for letting me know!
Really enjoy every single video you share voa UA-cam! Examples of those concepts in sparring rolls would be nice. Great job Jon.
For sure will make more sparring content
Thanks brother , really appreciate your videos
I used to think that in De La Riva, everything was about distance and straightening the legs but keeping the knees close to the body is super useful.
Thanks for sharing.
Both distance and side tilt matter a lot for dlr. if you are too close it can be hard to get the hook strong as well. Sometimes you just can’t get the hook then going to hip or key master is great option
Man it came out great! Felt super silly at times when we recorded certain things 🤣 but you've edited it really smooth and professional!
🔥🔥🔥🔥🥋🏆 I use this concept so much and it has saved me in getting my guard smashed for so long! Love your teaching & content! Thanks so much ossa
Thanks buddy, and happy to hear the content has made a difference!
Dear Jon, I need to say first thank you very much for the great videos, I saw many of your videos in UA-cam and your website and it's really improved my bjj🙏🏻
Secondly I personally would rather the long videos than the short ones and it makes better sense to me, also both this kind and those ones on the mat are perfect, thanks again.
Will be doing more for sure! The long ones are a lot of fun especially when it’s a deep dive on big concept.
@JonThomasBJJ Sounds nice, I live in Denmark and I really like to come to visit and training if it's possible!
Love hands on vids like this
we thank you Jon

Thanks Jon, really enjoy your content and found this format extremely useful to better understand guard passing and retention mechanics 👍🏻
I love this format of video. You are able to focus on the concept you want to get across during and after shooting the clips versus having to get both the narrative and the clip correct.

Appreciate the feedback!
Great content keep it coming.

Super helpful information. Thank you

Thanks buddy! Gonna try to do a good mix of mat videos and these kind. I think with mat video it’s easier to be quick and concise these are useful for longer principle type videos.
Love this! Thank you!
Happy you loved it! More soon!
