True story. That’s Allen Woody on bass. I was in the Marriot Hotel at LaGuardia Airport in Queens the night he died. I was with my girlfriend at the time ( now my wife of 19 years). We grew up near there. It was August 2000. EMS and the FDNY were there. I heard from someone that it was a rock musician that died. Someone said the Allman brothers. I’m a huge fan. I ran around frantic to find who it was. I found a fireman I knew from my neighborhood- also a fan. He was very upset. Said to me “ bro it’s Allen Woody “. I went to my knees in grief. My girl didn’t understand. She couldn’t. It’s an Allman Brothers thing.
@@stephenedwards5038 They lost Duane Allman and Berry Oakley within a year of eachother in the same town , the same way , in the early 70’s. Two all time greats. They still went on to produce several fantastic albums. When Dickie Betts left the band and Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks became the lead guitarists they were even better. Phenomenal band. Nobody can make music like that anymore. Nobody knows how.
I saw him play live for the last time at a music festival on the Hudson River in Peekskill/Croton NY area that Gov’t Mule headlined. He died about a week after that. It is possible that Gov’t Mule played another gig after that. Definitely one of his last live gigs.
@@realledbetter5015 That Mule show at Croton Point Park on Aug. 19, 2000 was Woody's (and the original Gov't Mule trio's) last show. After that show, Woody headed to spend what would be the last week of his life on Lake Sunapee, NH, where his wife Jenny's family still has a place. He died in the early morning hours of Aug. 26th, in a NYC hotel room. He was waiting overnight for his flight home to Nashville the next day.
@@jonathanrobinson1544 thank you for setting the record straight Jon. I always wondered if The Mule played any more shows with Woody after the Croton show. I used to enjoy seeing Gov’t Mule play The Chance in Poughkeepsie back in the mid 90’s. Then later starting in 2006 I would see Dickey & Great Southern play there a couple times. Then anywhere Dickey & Great Southern played like the Middletown, the Poconos, Atlantic City, etc…. I wish others would recognize how great Dickey was. I loved Dickey, Warren & Woody in the Bros. but for some reason others must insist that the duo of Warren Haynes & Derek Trucks were the best. Which of course is an opinion. One that I definitely do not share. But I saw the Allman Brothers during the Shades & Back Where it All Begins & HORDE tours. I never saw dick-less Bros. which is what I have to refer to them as without Dickey. But I have listened to & own several Dick-less Bros. recordings which fall short. Why can’t people understand how pivotal Dickey was to the Allman Brothers? All his years of service, the great songs he wrote & his beautiful style of play. Then nephew Derek comes into the band & moves Warren from slide to Dickey’s roll & adds his lame Indian licks which are pretty much out of place, do not enhance the song or music, & gets all these amazing accolades. Wrote virtually no material & yeah cool Uncle Butch has no use for Dickey ever again. I guess you can say I was & will always be on Team Dickey!
Sure, but you must realize that a person your age has no idea what an "insert modern technology" thing here. It's the same difference, so what's your point? Any kid these days surely knows what a silver dollar is. If they don't known, they sure as shit can navigate the internet to find out. People your age can't do it as good as kids can these days. I'm sure of this...I've seen it first hand. 😂
‘Insert modern technology ‘ ??? Kid, you are missing a whole part and generation of life from whence You came from . History does repeat it self …..I hope you will be prepared and have dropped your ‘cockiness ‘ to have learned and deal with .
You are right but I’m young (25) and I know a lot about silver dollars lol. I am actually a coin collector and have a bunch of videos about coins. You should check it out and learn more about silver dollars. I hope more young people will get into collecting coins. It really shows the history of America.
I heard this song in 2004 for the first time. That was an original score. The movie was Rocks ' walking tall ' and the opening scene started with this song. Can't explain those days. 2 cds for a movie. CD player. 21 inch crt tv. The only thing that remained same from those days is the vibe which I get through this song. This was the song which ignited the blues inside me.. Those days.......Hmmmmmmmmmmm🥲🥲🥲🥲
Those were great concerts. I’ll never forget the one at Oak Mountain that was the last show of that years tour. The different guys were constantly jamming with other bands. Jimmy Herring seemed to never leave the stage. They ended the night by bringing five bands on stage to play Werewolf in London.
i wanna know what was in the cup Gregg was given right before they take off...he looks puffy and sedated...voice is def still there and Warren really shines
@@sblair6362 Oh, and did'nt I mention that it was a compilation of different bands? I uploaded another extract on my channel: young Eric Gales and his brother on acoustic guitars (ua-cam.com/video/mhVplvAHFEU/v-deo.html) - fabulous performance!
Why compare two totally different kind of bands - ABB certainly never had a song like "A Day In The Life". Edit: In a comment, someone has written that the Beatles never had a song like - hm, maybe "Liz Reed"? After my reply he deleted the comment.
Big fan of the band, fortunate to see many shows, not as much as some, more than most. In this era it would not have mattered what time of day it was, Gregg looked like that a whole bunch of the time. Wonder what was in that cup?
Oh no, Warren is not underrated for sure - countless fans love him. Fans of Rihanna, Adele or Taylor Swift may have no idea about him, but that doesn't mean they underrate him. Anyone who knows Warren's music rates him very highly!
The bassist was sober the other two cats for juiced fo sho, so I don't know their names wasn't my music back then but I did like it my parents played that game...
This will make alot of people very angry but this is america we have the right to what we think . How ever that sadly dont stop gangs of people to gang up on them and run them n dirt for not thinkin way they do. I dont like the allman brothers. some good soul could to us a favor and improve remaster etc... this images... looks like it was filmed using a potato lol at least it sounds great thought
Who still listening in 2024 come on now
Right here! Just read his 2012 biography too
Me! 😊
Who wouldn't? RIP Dicky

That opening riff of thumb picking is undeniable
One of my favorite songs and I’m only 42 years old.
Came here by accident. What a rare find and what a gem. Thanks for sharing. Filled my heart with such great memories and joy.
Warren killed it
He always does

Not only did Warren kill it, he SAVED it!
He always does, going to see Go. Mule this month and I can't wait.
Amazing to be able to function that high
2023 still kicking asses
This epic gift brings back so many memories...
That last slide part he plays. Is something special.
Greg and Warren….give me every day !!!!! 😊
Kids these days have no idea what a silver dollar is... I remember it was a big thing when I was a kid and a 50 cent coin.

Lmao that is the record where i can find both Duane and Dickey in Warren's playing. Underrated man
The cameraman has the uncanny knack of doing all the wrong shots at the wrong times. It's nearly impressive.

Who plays the "orchestra part"? And what "orchestra part" do you mean?
