Great rivalry, although I am a big Graf fan but both Graf & Seles put power hitting & athleticism to whole new level.
With the possible exception of Borg's retirement, this is the ultimate 'what if' in tennis imho. Seles was unstoppable in 91 and 92...
Yet she’s 1-3 against Graf during those years...
@@franciscolaprida2133 yep, but for how long? that is the 'what if'...
@@paulelverstone8677 Steffi of 93-96 was far better than Steffi of 91/92.
Seles just exploited Steffi‘s slump which was caused by a nasty blackmail scandal.
But OK, crime is a part of life.
I love Monica Seles.. my favorite of all time ❤
❤Steffi the GOAT of tennis❤
STEFFI GRAF.....CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS NONE BEFORE HER and NONE AFTER HER......
Truly is a shame what happened to Monica. Not to diminish Graf's accomplishments, but it is interesting to note that after 8 years on the tour at the time of the stabbing, Graf was sitting at 11 Singles Grand Slams. But within just four short years on the professional tour, Seles had already amassed 8 singles grand slams. One thing is for certain we were all robbed of what could have become; possibly a rivalry that could have been similar to Evert and Navratilova.
Steffi would’ve never gotten to 22 tbh and I reckon Seles would’ve won more slams than her
@@Official.tadiwadefinitely not a guarantee.
@@rajusaha855 its a fact we have those few years to determine that. Seles was never the same just like serena was never the same after child birth
@@Official.tadiwa would Serena have won 23 slams if Henin wouldn't have retired at her peak in 2008 when she was undisputed no 1 & dominating Serena or Venus didn't have sjogren syndrome ??? Definitely not.
@@Official.tadiwa would Martina & Chrissy have won 18 slams if Tracy Austin didn't have that back injury or car accident??? Mind you from 1979-81 Tracy was dominating both Chrissy & Martina. So what 'if' doesn't matter in sports otherwise there will be 1000 of what 'if'.
Monica was the best and without that attack she could write another different history.....love and respect for Monica,my childhood crush and inspiration of watching tennis.
I love you Monica!
Seles was the best. She was a few years younger than Steffi and was on her way to surpassing her as she came into her prime. Sadly, that nut who stabbed her accomplished exactly what he wanted. Damaged her career and enabled Graf to rule tennis for several more years.
Seles would have had a chance to surpass Steffi only if Steffi‘s slump had continued. Which it didn‘t.
You want proof?
Between mid-1990 and 1992 Steffi missed 8 of 12 major finals (slams, YEC). 66.6 %.
In 1993-96 she missed only 3 of 18 major finals. 16.6 %.
A HUGE difference.
Nothing indicates that a Monica with her dying father and her eating disorder problems would have been able to threaten Steffi. Her window of opportunity had closed.
Kudos to her for being able to exploit Steffi‘s slump of the early 90s so perfectly, though.
Completely wrong assessment. Sales was never atheletic & she reached her pick when steffi started facing issues on her personal & professional front. Steffi knew how to survive & that's why she dominated multiple era where as Monica couldn't recapture the position just becoz she couldn't make the adjusent in her as she always had a one dimensional game
@@carrerau7138 So Steffi's personal problems miraculously disappeared once Monika was out of the game. How convenient
@@TheMixrs So Seles miraculously began to win slams 4 weeks after the start of the nasty Graf Blackmail Scandal? How convenient.
That scandal lasted from May 1990 until February 1992.
Seles won 5 slams during that time, took over the #1 ranking, had a big lead in ranking points.
Steffi
- had her only slam losses ever to Garrison, Sabatini, Novotna,
- suffered her worst slam loss ever (06 26 to ASV),
- lost to her youngest opponent ever in a slam (Seles, 16),
- lost to her oldest opponent ever in a slam (Navratilova, 35).
You don‘t think that is a slump?
Graf was always better on faster courts, even on clay before the stabbing Seles only won 10-8, then a few weeks later she was able to get only 3 games in total in the Wimbledon final
The best female final ever
you know what's bizarre, I just learned that Monica gets into a horrible tragedy on court in the past (if you know what I mean) I've never heard of this before. so UA-cam recommended a video to me about that literally today. and now you made this video which totally BIZARRE...
Monica was my favorite
Very probably Steffy less and Monica more majors. Easy. Just remember their final GS in Aus 93. Monica approached the match differently compared to Roland Garros 92, she was much stronger.
A match played on Seles‘s favorite and Steffi’s least favorite surface (slow hard court).
And yet the match hung in the balance until 5 minutes before the end.
Even in early 93 the process of Seles gaining weight due to her eating disorder was plain to see. Whereas Steffi was continuously improving again from her nadir of winter 92 (when the family‘s blackmailer finally were convicted).
“Graff“?
Seriously…?
Seles was robbed of her greatness because of that steffi fan smdh steffi wouldn’t have 22
Serena wouldn't have won 23 slams either if Venus wouldn't have sjogren syndrome, Henin & Clijsters wouldn't have retired.
@@rajusaha855 hmm its a bit different. seles was wiped out by a crazy fan. Henin retired due to loss of form and Clijsters 1st retirement was due to the fact that she was not good enough (in the head)
@@rajusaha855 I call it domination. how many slams did Henin win this so called weak era when she came back
@@rajusaha855 how many slams did Henin win this so called weak era when she came back? Answer 0 . It was so weak henin couldn't win anything
@@rajusaha855 Graf era was weak especially when seles got stabbed. sukova in us open final is really tough. and lets not talk about martina era with powder puff serves from the likes of sue barker.
how can they Rivals? they only played once or twice a year, while Steffi is Winning or losing Monica is nowhere to be found,, while Sabatini or Arantxa is beating Steffi in high class tournaments, Monica is not in the draw mostly, Monica only won in rebound ace or clay😅😅😅😅
Monica was like Nadal’s nightmare to Federer ( except grass ) where Steffi ( or Federer) still ruled the game. Monica won 8 out of 11 GS she compete before the stabbing. she was stil very young and developing her game - there is no doubt in my mind she would dominate the game in women tennis for another few more years and hence double( or more) her GS win if this horrible incident didn’t happen! Steffi certainly would not get to 22 GS as her game did not evolve ( still relying on a lethal forehand and slice backhand ) in her entire career hence she got no solution to beat Monica ( the pre-stabbed Monica).
The world is unfair
However, I also think because of 2 hands on both sides unique style of play, she could have suffered more injury in later part of her career.
#1-ranked Seles vs. Steffi 2-5 win/loss.
You idyot.
Steffi was more athletic and disciplined. Seles was not. Stabbing was a huge tragedy no doubt. But even if it didn’t occur Graf would have prevailed.
graf was trying to find ways to win slams other than wimbledon. wonder why she won the Australian open in 1993
@@olaraay Steffi was trying to make finals in the early 90s in the first place.
From 1987 to 1996 she missed only 12 major finals.
8 of them in the 2.5 years between mid-1990 and 1992.
4 of them in the other 7.5 years.
Without the Graf Blackmail Scandal Seles would have less than 4 slams.
Because which slams could she realistically have won in 1990-92 against a Steffi in 1988/89 form (and Steffi was still improving)??
I mean - come on!! 😄
Except she did not prevail. Monica had her number except for the 92 Wimbledon finals where many girls ganged up against Seles's grunting. She was forced not to grunt during the entire match in the Finals against Steffi. Overall, Seles defeated Graf consistently in the early 90s up til the stabbing.
@@kmnewyork7167 Steffi did prevail. She had Seles‘s number in every phase of their rivalry - when Steffi was #1 pre-stabbing, when Seles was #1 pre-stabbing, post-stabbing.
@@kmnewyork7167 even during Seles's peak from 1991-93 it's was Steffi who leading their h2h 3-2. Seles never beat Steffi on fast court like carpet & grass but Graf beat her on every surfaces.
Graf would of trained harder and got up that ass… Seles wouldn’t have lasted long.
Steffi just needed to regain her normal form.
But even when she wasn‘t there yet in 1991-93 she had a WINNING H2H against top-ranked Seles!
Roger Federer
Steffi Graf
Two of my favourite.
“They both worked through it (the stabbing).” Correct.
One as victim; the other as benefactress.
yes ,correct , Monica is milking that stabbing in the press, she became a US citizen, got endorsement from Nike and retain her No.1 ranking after 2 years, isny it neat😂😂😂
Why benefactress???
The stabbing is used until TODAY by Steffi haters to disparage her!
@@dagingbuenaobra6563, she deserves It, Mônica was great. Steffi fathers was a bookmakers
