- OK - well, not EVERY Final Fantasy. Just the mainline ones that are the original versions or upgraded versions of the originals (sorry, Final Fantasy XV Pocket).
I had a lot of fun on this one! Once the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters got announced as releasing for the Switch, I knew I wanted to do this video, and I was pleasantly surprised by my experience with some of the games I hadn't spent a ton of time with.

There is no way I will accept that FF3 is better than FF5. Please play more of both, I assure you the differences become stark by the late game.
I'm going to keep giving it time, to be sure, but there's a point of diminishing returns that has to be noted. If I've played a game multiple times - which I have between the PS1 and GBA releases, as well as this Pixel Remaster - and it's failed to hook me in the first 4 or 5 hours, I think I'm allowed to knock it down a grade. I kind of consider that my TV show test bed - if you can't hook me on a show in three episodes, why would I keep watching?
And I'm certainly not saying it's bad, by any stretch, just that it didn't do enough to make me have the compulsion to keep playing it right off the bat. The other games in the series, even ones like 7 that I feel are weaker entries in the overall series, at least got me on board quickly and compelled me to keep playing.
I will definitely keep going on it, though, and once I get to the endgame if my opinions have changed, I'll be sure to let you know here if my opinion on it has changed. Regardless of any disagreement, I appreciate you taking the time to watch, and appreciate the advice to keep pushing forward with the game. :)
@@SquarePegs To be clear, I'm not even really disagreeing; it's your list, the whole point is which ones strike a chord with you.
FF5 in my opinion just does everything 3 did, only better. Story, characters, world building. Perhaps MY favorite job system in the entire series, but if the game doesn't engage you, I'd understand completely.
FF4 is my favorite Final Fantasy, with 9 being a close second, I have no strong bias towards 3 or 5 (having first played both in the late 90's , long after FF1, 4, 6, and 7).
I haven't played either in years, but that was my gut reaction having just started playing the Pixel Remasters this week (Switch physical finally arrived). The rebalanced Chaos in FF1 absolutely curb-stomped me last night. 😂
FF4 at S tier and FF6 at S+ tier ? If anything, at least you got those damn right. I remember playing some FF4 version on a PSP though and it defnitely looked way sharper than the Switch version. Also it came with 2 additional games following events after FF4 originally finished. It was called the collection or after years or something. 100% worth a check and it banged as hard if not harder than the original.
FFII is so rough. I played through all six in May and June -- dungeon design, the grind, the weird levelling system, the wonky conversation system... I think that's a huge step down for me from the first. I'm not sad I didn't get that as a kid.
I can absolutely see that perspective, definitely. I enjoy it, but it's decidedly possible I'm giving it bonus points for trying something different and taking a risk. Thanks for watching!

The art and the story is really otherworldly. it encompasses the early 2000's really well.

@@SquarePegs Higher mid, to be fair. It's no Chrono Trigger, DQV or even FF7. I liked it when I was younger and still have the gba rom patched with snes graphics/audio somewhere. The steampunk asthetic is superb. Character specific attacks are cool. In terms of story FF6 is fine, we didn't go to the moon or anything. I hate the trope of unforseen big bad who appears at the end of the game but Kefka at least showed up throughout so this wasn't a problem. One issue is that there are too many characters. There are fourteen of them and maybe four of them develop at all or have anything to say after joining the party. Relm and Strago are like Porom and Palom if they stayed in your party rather than pretend dying, only Relm and Strago have less character given to them. Big cast of characters impressive, sure, but there's little depth involved in most of them. The single biggest problem for me is the leveling system. Adding stat gains to specific espers was such a stupid thing to do. You can't have an optimal run through the game without fighting as little as possible before finding espers. This is just as bad as leveling in FF2 or drawing magic to junction in FF8, the latter of which I mind much less than permanently losing stats. The world in FF6 is adequate even if I thought it was slightly lazy just rearranging continents halfway through the game, kind of neat if considered a story beat though. Never personally play far beyond the point where the party splits into three anymore because, I have to push myself. Something I found odd later on was that my favorite part of the game may have been that giant guide on gamefaqs. FF6 sits as third best FF in front of FF4 and behind FF9.

I think people watch too much Hollywood... there is shown an ideal diversity and people transfer this into the real world.
Disagree with VII. The original is still really nice to play, unlike Remake/Rebirth.

We picked up the pixel remaster collection as well. I'm pretty excited about it as I've only played Final Fantasy 7. I've got a lot of catching up to do. Naturally I was pretty interested in hearing what you had to say about 7 and you know, you're not wrong. It holds a special place though because it was my first turn based RPG. Now the remake on the other hand, I loved!!!
Cool video. I could never really get into FF2, it just always seemed so broken but I don’t bash it as it’s the most important entry in the series outside of the original. It’s great remembering a time where media was just allowed to take big swings and get another try if something missed.
Awesome video. I have the Pixel Remasters on my list to get. I love the Final Fantasy games, well most of them. Final Fantasy IX is my favorite of the ones that I have played. While Final Fantasy IV is a great game as well, I made the mistake of playing the DS version which apparently was the more difficult version of the game and was super frustrating due to lack of save spots. While I did beat that game, there were also plenty of rage quits along the way LOL LOL.
I had to skip right ahead to FFIX because I was thinking to myself, “do I have to put up a counterpoint?!”
And no, I don’t one bit. 😂 FFIX is absolutely underappreciated and the game is my favorite in the series bar none. And now I’ll watch the rest lol

I honestly really love the FF7 3D models nowadays, not because they look great, but because they look unique and even charming in their own way
No other game looks like it and if you take a screenshot of any point of the game, you will instantly know its FF7
I really need to pick these up when they go on sale. I kept trying play FFI back in the early Playstation days but my bro accidentally deleted my save file. Multiple times. Sigh. It was had to get back into the game after the third of fourth time.
See, now what you need to do is buy HIM the FF1 Pixel Remaster and just go to his place and delete his save file. ;)
Btw any tips on the card game in FF8 I am stuck on one bad boss fight and heard getting a certain weapon will help
FF7 and FF8 I am playing both of them and near the end. I feel like FF8 does not get enough love
7 should definitely be above 3 at least. I get it doesn't click with some people, but putting it under an NES game is ridiculous (same thing with 5)

I liked FF5 a lot once I was able to play it back in the early '00s via fan translations and emulation and would definitely go back to it before FF4.
I have to agree for the most part on your assessment of the PS1 trilogy. All 3 have merits and are head and shoulders above many of their contemporaries but. They all have aspects that I like but are none have the total package. I like the Materia system and character designs in FF7 (it also has the more memorable music of the 3), the flow and mini game (Triple Triad was so fun) in FF8, and the setting and tone of FF9. None of those are the total package that Final Fantasy 6 is. It has it all - the music, the characters, the story, the graphics, a fun magic system, everything.
FF9 is always odd one for me. I don't even know why I don't like it so much. Maybe because it's really slow. I played and finished it once on PSX back in day, and God battles are so slow. And I think because european PSX was little bit different than others. I tried to get in again and bought Switch version, but I just can't get into it. But I don't think it's a bad game at all.
I tried original titles for the first time recently. I would not rate FF6 above FF4. Yes there was kind of more to see with improved graphics, but graphics here is subjective. I think FF4 looks kind of cuter for me. Gameplay of FF6 was more frustrating to me. Notable problems was that you can't run away easily from basic random encounters like in FF4 and using Espers become problem when I needed to remember which character does what. My characters ended up having pretty much the same spells in the end because of this. While in FF4 I clearly knew Rydia is summoner, Rosa is white mage. I also tried to give decent chance to characters that I didn't really care much like Gau who's rage command list is so enormous and similar that I memorised maybe like 5 of them, but I spend long time yawning at the screen.
Good list and I mostly agree. I haven't played all the Final Fantasy games on this list but of those I've played, FF 6 is my absolute favorite. Followed by FF 10, FF 4, and FF 9. I never could get into 7 and I have yet to play the remake. On a side note, after FF 6, my favorite FF game is Mystic Quest. It's such a relaxing and enjoyable game for me. I have fond memories of my brother and I playing it back in the 90s. I wish that would come to the Switch. Not to mention some of those DS FF games too.
I’m sorry that V didn’t connect with you. It’s my all time favorite FF game and I truly believe that had Square released it in the west back in ‘92 it would be as beloved here as it is in Japan. I do completely agree with you though that FF7 is completely overrated

Great video Jay! Final Fantasy VII was no doubt an amazing game...for its time. Unfortunately, early PS1 3D model based games (and other consoles of that era) just did not age well when you try to go back to them today.

Ff9 was my first and favorite. I really enjoy ff12 because it's different. I play it less for the story, although it gets geopolitical war spot the hell on, and more for the side content. The hunts, getting the end game equipment, exploring the map, etc. The ones I want to try after being introduced to some of the other characters in Dissidia are 1, 2, 6, and 7. I've tried most of them and just didn't get engaged enough on my initial play throughs of 1, 7, and 8.
own all the FF's on that is release on the switch(I really wish 13 got a release) My top 3 are II, 8 and perhaps 9. Got I loved 2 with Firoin, Guy and Maria fighting the empire.
I also wish we had 13 on the Switch. Wildly underrated.
I also had to get the spinoffs to complete my collection. The 2 chocobo games, final fantasy maxima, and theatrhythm. I may never play the spinoffs actually but it feels nice having the whole physical switch collection.
About FF7 I agree I just played the part 1 of the remake. And I just don't see the great appeal. I didn't feel anything for the main characters. The story was boring, game play was fun tho. 7/10

Compared to SNES titles music is subpar. Have you listened to all 4 CDs? Can you name all tracks that you actually liked? I bet its mostly first few tracks like 10 from 1st CD, 2 from 2nd CD, 2 from 3rd CD and like 4 from 4th CD.
cloud is the worste in the origional ff7, but he isn't that mean in the ramake, you can choose what he says sometimes and even then he isn't alwasy being rude to others. cloud is rude for the first small part of the remake but then he gets nicer over time which I like. sad that the remake isn't on switch lol

Definitely ranked X (A-) and stated that since X-2 wasn't a mainline entry I didn't rank it in this video since I hadn't beaten X yet. :)
Never played FF6 before but now I have to! FF8 to me has always been the best in the series. Such an immersive game for being a PS1 game. And it's like 100X more immersive and emotional and well thought out than FF7.
I am truly envious of you playing FF6 for the first time! It's a magnificent game.
And 1000% accurate on FF8. Ignore what @generationpixel says, the Scottish Highlands have fogged over his brain. (Also, check his channel out - Stewart is one of my favorites!)
FF6 is my 2nd all time favorite rpg right behind Chrono Trigger. The stories are magnificent.
