22:27 Thanks for mentioning this, and not many people know or realize that we had to ship a game every year. I worked at Blackbox from Underground 2 until Undercover, when I left. Honestly the team always put a ton of effort into each game, and the scope was always more than what we released, but things would come up like technical issues or time constraints. Our actual production time was more like 9-10 months out of the year as things did not ramp up right away after one game finished.
Underground 2 is a legendary piece of media, so sad to see blackbox gone
I built and tuned the driving experiences of all the canyon tracks in Carbon. (they were set dressed by other artists). I'm glad you liked them.

Carbon was amazing, i can still remember to this day how i played all night with my friend trying to beat Angie.
@@Micholex hah it was like a lifetime ago. I was just 1 of about 150-200 people working on those games. It wasn't ever easy, there was a lot of grinding and late nights to get those games out the door.

I genuinely don't get it how he said nfs most wanted 2005, 2012 and payback have a boring map Like bro what he on fr brotha those 3 were the most enjoyable maps i ever played to be frank even better than heat and unbound which look so lifeless
and rivals certainly deserves A tier for how much they improved the handling from mw2012, and also added a proper progression and made a better version of hot pursuit imo
And I'd honestly place payback above heat and unbound for how fun it was collecting derelicts, progressing thru the storyline the story missions were actually f&f level yes the microtransactions were annoying but aside from that i felt everything was really good even the map was really fun for me atleast
He might have played only after they nerfed the cops a few times after the game came out cause they use to be crazy
Bro is born in 2005, forgive this tier list.
NFS 2012 was trying to become a successor to the 2005 MW, however, criterion was forced to rush development but there's hints around the map that there were going to be locations to explore and some hidden dialogue within the game files.
The devs also didn't wanna call it Most Wanted after seeing what the game is shaping up to be after all the rush knowing it won't be received well, but EA forced them to keep the name. Classic EA

I heard someone tried to develop a mod that completed all the missing features of MW2012 and it gave the game a different title, but that's all I remember.

Porsche unleashed was a banger. the story mode was great and felt immersive. really felt like a porsche factory test driver
I still play this game from time to time.
2012 most wanted is so nostalgic for me. I spent hours just cruising around in the Ariel Atom listening to "I Love it" repeat on the radio every 10 minutes
"Cast away" for me. I was on the freeway trying to break the speed record. Such a fun experience.

I am very biased towards Rivals, and even if I set aside my biases, Rivals is still at least a B tier game

Hot pursuit 2010 will always have a different place for me. That was the first ever game that I considered as "a clean racing game" back as a child. The graphics were astonishing at that time.
It's been 14y and that game's graphics still hold up until now in my opinion.

Clean, located in a beautiful region and filled with truely intense races. If they had added police in free roam the game would be a perfect 10.
I honestly loved NFS 2015, the story was so corny but unlike u say, I did really think it was so bad it was good. And the vibe of the game (always night, environment, etc.) was also really enjoyable for me.
And also it's such a beautiful game, best looking nfs game imo

I love prostreet the whole race day vibe, the way each car looks like with the different liveries.
Pro street just has such a strong personality. Its great.
Who can forget Wheelie competitions. TBH they were a complete mystery the first time I played on how they were even possible, but name a cooler type of competition added to any racing game.
I love the iconic teams, super promotion, drift infantry, noise bomb, G-effect etc.

I love how after and during each race the announcer would commentate on what’s happening. You show up with a new car they’ll comment about it, you total out they’ll be all like “damn, tough break dude”, and even if you sit at the starting line doing nothing, he’ll be like “does Ryan just need a minute??” Game was breathing life
NFS Unbound in A tier over Underground 1, bro's about to get slammed
Honestly man, unbound is becoming a really good game imo, just skip the dogshit story mode
When I played Underground (even after playing modern games) for the first time it felt extremely great. The atmosphere, night driving vibe, customizations, neon lights, freedom without cops really had me. But then I played UG2, I was even more astonished cause UG2 had taken all the things from UG1 to the best possible level. So unlike mostwanted, I think Underground 2 overshadowed UG1 and that might be the reason why UG1 is underrated.
Note for Need for Speed Most Wanted : you can remove the piss effect by changing the visual treatment in the settings .
It was such a missed opportunity to talk about MW 2012's cutscenes. Some of the most wanted cutscenes were amazing and represented the car beautifully, but then there's the ambush cutscenes which were.... interesting to say the least

Rivals dynamic environment from leaves to birds to planes it feels alive no modern racing game or any game has had that much going on. Makes it still looks good and better then some new games today. Graphics and bugs aside the setting and environment is stunning when the mountains and hills do glitch out
I love rivals
Sometimes the songs that would play when you weren't racing or anything would really add to the experience. songs such as Pompeii really added this mellow tone to the gameplay.

Pro Street is severely underrated imo. It has both street and track influence making it very unique. From the design of the cars and the game's handling, its like a combination of MW and shift.
thats why it was crap. People who played NFS wanted street racing, cops all that excitement. To takew that away and go to shitty track racing waspathetic. If you wanted a track racing game, there were plenty of better options.

I actually love nfs 2015, the shift back to the underground type street scene was such a welcome change and I honestly loved the story. Something about the simplicity of being part of a friend group that loves cars created such a chill experience. ... that they completely ruined with the garbage of payback.
Both Need For Speed Hot Pursuit (2010) and Rivals are kart racers in disguise... and I love them.
Honestly MW 2005 deserves its own tier. I fucking love that game, the first racing game ive played

Heat was the most fun i had since playing Carbon so seeing it this high up (although it felt like it was raining ALL THE TIME that my friends and I called it a glorified Rain Tech Demo) makes me happy and feel money well spent

The Forza Horizon games are obnoxious versions of the Project Gotham Racing series. All the fake ass stupid social bs added to it is just annoying and distracts from the core experience.

NFS pro street is the best racing game ever. No other game comes close to replicating high speed feeling, danger of racing in such speeds and having a wide range of race types all well balanced and having different feeling - drift, drag, circuit, wheelie, top speed runs. Each car had unique feeling, muscle cars felt heavy but strong, lighter cars felt like they suppose to. Road bumps actually effected the ride and there was realistic damage. Endless modifications and great selection of cars. Great atmosphere. The game had everything it just went under appreciated.

Thanks for doing this. I played all the games from NFS3 to Carbon. All the games after that I haven't even heard of. My interest went to other genres at that point.
I played way to much NFS Undercover and my younger self remembers it a lot differently than people seem to now

Blackboxes run of UG2 - > MW - > Carbon NEEDS to be studied. Hopefully one day we get an overarching story that spans between a 2 (or more) games in the future!

Honestly I always liked how close to a racing sim The Run was, after The Run I went from NFS to Gran Turismo, but every now and then after getting some medals in GT7, I go back to the run for a while. It's funny how proper sim racers make something as difficult as the run seem "arcade" like.
Doing that game on the hardest difficulty was doable until I hit a time trial and was like “how the fuck do I make it to the next checkpoint with 8 fucking seconds???

i have nfsmw, carbon, and underground 2 on my pc and i still find myself going back to all three to this day
@xstonerkiingx no way, the real roots of this series was about racing cool cars and fleeing from the cops while doing so. Never needed any characters or storyline. Just the roads and some exotic cars like a dodge viper, the corvettes or a Lamborghini Diablo

Prostreet all I can say was it was awesome as hell to be a simulator but still be easy to control like arcadish if that makes sense xD I love prostreet. I miss it.
I'd personally put Prostreet, 2015 and rivals a one tier higher but man what a solid tierlist! Finally someone who doesn't just crap to newer need for speeds just because the old bag community told them to! I also honestly agree with the top 1 being Carbon, man that game is revolutionary and I think people don't give it the credit it deserves just because they played Most Wanted and Underground the most.
Agree. I absolutely love Carbon because of the Canyon Duel, we have drift and not drag, gameplay feels a lot better (probably my brain tricked me but that's how I feel), and Palmont looks 10x better than Rockport.
The structures in Palmont look bigger which makes it feel like I'm in an actual city, while in Rockport it feels like I'm in a miniature city because of the size of the structures. I'm guessing the reason for that is because of the use of night time in Carbon which masks the real size of the structures.
Speaking of night time, it's also the reason why I love it. Seeing the neon and other light illuminate the city is just gorgeous. The canyons are also really beautiful and scary at the same time for how dark it is. On the other hand, I never really liked the piss filter in MW05. It just looks so ugly, and I've been playing that game since 2008-ish.
I just wish that the game was longer and had more bosses. It's kinda weird seeing a story that went from big (15 blacklist) in the first instalment to small (4 bosses) in the sequel.

Brought back so many memories playing nfs MW 05 lan races all night , beating world map lap record set on Carrera gt with m3 gtr, wow I was so obsessed with that…nostalgic
NFSII through Porsche Unleashed had incredible soundtracks. Modern NFS misses Rom di Prisco's music badly. Also, RIP to Saki Kaskas, Callista is an all-time great menu track for a videogame.

Hot Pursuit 2 doesn't deserve anything below S tier. (I am extremely bised) Played it the most amount of time, even before I knew how to read.
HP2 is such an underrated game. Easy top 3 for me

Exactly, people should take off their pink tinted glasses of nostalgia before doing reviews, for everyone, their best games are the one experienced in their time as a child but as you grow old you don't enjoy the next iterations as much, not because they are bad (sometimes they are lol) but because you grew up

At the risk of sounding like a "boomer", I agree. I truly believe the older games (like Hot Pursuit 3, High Stakes, Porsche Unleashed , Hot Pursuit 2 as well) don't get enough of their flowers. THAT era was when you could really tell EA cared about their product and wanted you to enjoy every little detail within the game. Everything from the cars, to the soundtrack, to the ambiance of the tracks etc.
Anyway, once I found out this dude was 19, the ranking made a lot more sense lol. Granted, I like the concept of his video, but this ideally needs to be done by someone who was actually around to experience the franchise from the very beginning to present.
Finally someone said it. I felt that his rating on the older games was so plain and unfair.

Hot pursuit 2 was such a fun game to sit down and play with a friend. And oowee the soundtrack
NFS undercover was one of my all time favourite Wii games, its completely different to the Xbox360/PS3/PC version but is essentially a Most Wanted clone. Love the videos bro, genuinely so surprised you only have ~500 subscribers, your editing style and the way you talk on these videos is so unique and very high quality. Looking forward to the next one
I’ve noticed that with NFS games from the early to late 2000s, one of the console versions seems to be distinct from the the others so I’m not even surprised undercover would be different on one console from the others. And thank you bro I appreciate that!

About this, Payback just getting better for Story Missions/Campaign. Some Actions, Modes, kinda enjoyable. Unbound just kinda looks like Heat but adding 2D Style, it's a nice things too.
But if your reasons about gacha/gambling trade for upgrades, I can agree about this.

don't get me wrong i did played it on the xbox 360, but like people who hate on unbound are people who just can't grow up and accept a 2021 game simply will not be like a 2005 game
NFS MW was the pinnacle of the series for me back in 2005. Had an absolute blast with that game and I've never played another one since.
Underground2 Carbon and NFS2015 are my favorite. I've spent years on playing this 3 titles
Every time I see a ranking like this for Need for Speed games, and its being done in this day and age, I feel like NFS Hot Pursuit II always get underrated because no one is able to play the original PS2 version, which is a very different game from any other version. NFS Hot Pursuit II for the PS2 is still, to this DAY, the most fun racing game I have ever played. And my favorite genre of games is racing, I've played ALOT of them LOL
NFS Hot Pursuit II was originally supposed to be console exclusive for the PS2. I don't remember who or why they changed their minds and wanted it to be cross console, but Black Box refused to do thaf process AGAIN for the other consoles, so it was done by some other indie company using some of the Black Box coding, but it's very bare bones. It has almost none of the actual mechanics of the full game. So when you play it anywhere else, it looks stupid by comparison.....I feel like it needs a proper review on the ORIGINAL game so people can really appreciate this gem 💯
Also, this is the game that introduced most people of that time to the best car ever made, the McLaren F1 🔥
I haven't played every single title but I definitely agree on Most Wanted 2005 and Underground 2. I think The Run is very underrated by most people. You rated that one more accurately than most. My biggest disparity would be with ProStreet. I think I love it because it has elements of rpg to it. I prefer more of a racing sim that doesn't scale difficulty. This game isn't exactly that, but it is more than most NFS titles. It's like Underground 2 without roaming the streets for races. And honestly, that was my least favorite part of that game anyway.
pro street is basicly Forza Motorsport/Grand Turismo on crack...... And I love it, who would thought that combining NFS Arcade handling and putting in close track race would be so much fun. Plus the game has a style and interesting progressing system (unlike the Shift Series that take itself to seriously)
Dude idc what the others are saying about your ratings. I think you were very honest and just talked about how you felt playing the games. I agree with most of the stuff you said and this video gave me a very good idea about which games I'm excited to try out. nfs 2 se was my childhood delight. My uncle got me that and we played together multiplayer and he always beat me. but after 6 years i started beating him lol. it’s the best for my memories to come back alive
Honestly, to each their own opinion. You enjoy what you like, and that's okay. I loved Pro Street, for the most part. Most of the games I do at least like. And then there's Payback and Undercover. My personal top three in no particular order would be Rivals, The Run, and Underground 2. An honourable mention to Heat, I loved more than I expected.
I agree with all your S tier choices but I would definitely add NFS Hot Pursuit 2

Porsche Unleashed was one of the best NFS for me. Thanks to this game you could get a lot of information about porsche. And Underground II was pretty good. But for me Shift 2 was the best. All NFS games also had a great soundtrack
Ayyy love to see my boy underground 2 getting some love have been replaying it recently and love it and would recommend and one of the best customization (in my opinion) in the franchize
NFS: World was such a blast as a child, revisiting the (modded) game now it doesn't feel as good anymore. Just lotta nostalgia pushing the game personally
bro need for speed rivals was the first need for speed i ever played and i would just play as a cop with my brother and sit on this one massive bridge doing all the jumps and occasionally bullying racers, so seeing it rank so low broke my heart
Putting NFS Shift in C tier is a crime. You should try to play it again, such a fun game.
I used to love nitro as a kid. Still makes me nostalgic. I always loved the sound design and having my graffiti on the walls as I drove round pretty cool! Best part though for me as a kid was the cut scenes, I used to love how well the characters give off their personalities without saying a word. Might be nostalgia talking, but nitro was a personal favourite of mine
You technically can't play *every* NFS game, you missed that chance by a few years when Need For Speed World got shut down.
But you know there are private serevers of this game... ye? xdd
Sooo you can still play this game, but not on official servers (because they don't exist) xd
people are still playing World on freeshards and its better then official version, without donate, with balance fix, with new cars and many other stuff, it still looks good, you can play it on your old shitty PC, and it's the best NFS of all time

Underground 1/2, Carbon and Most Wanted will ALWAYS be part of me and my soul. Whenever I'm about do die (i hope as late as possible) i want to play them again and bring back nostalgic childhood memories ❤
PS' Need for Speed 2015 is amazing I don't know how can you hate it, it has that incredibly immersive and suggestive world, that brings back the old night need for speeds vibe, the graphics are very well made, and the story is cool, i love Ken Block and Magnus Walker in it! It can't be bad forsure!
I'm writing all that after being playing those games throughout my life when they came out and not After running through those games all at once like you did, so maybe that's the actual issue there
I agree. As someone who grew up with the early NFS hits, 2015 is the only one that managed to recapture that feeling for me. It's a shame how slept on it is.
Most wanted 2012 is the best game ever for like 2 hours. You drive around, find an r8 or something in a ditch, you get an endorphine rush, you're pumped to explore the map then about 2 hours later you find a dup and you realize there's multiple locations for every car and you'll probably find all of them eventually.
This could have been the best progression system in any racing game if there were no duplicate cars. It also gives you a chance to try some random Ford Focus that you wouldn't have bought in a classic NFS.
I mean yeah there's 200 cars you can buy but you only have so much money so you'll start the game in a Dacia Logan then buy a Subaru then a Mustang then a Porsche then a Ferrari then you'll finish the campaign and uninstall the game. You're not incentivized to leave your comfort zone.

Keep in mind you can't just view NFS games from a modern context. Yeah many of them are dated now, but they were insanely innovative back then. Pretty much every entry until undercover had something never tried in any other racing game.
So is unbound. unbound tried something new and what happend people hate it. they say it is sane as heat. so what like the whole fucking balck box era was so similar to each other.
they still are innovative now, fact that they got the balls to experiment visually and mechanically.
and yes, yes you do need to see them in a modern context, it aint the 2000s no more.

@@TheCapitalWanderer Understanding the context of the games release leads to better reviews. The reviews here for pre-Most Wanted NFS games are lackluster and completely without context. The reviewer didnt play racing games at the time, so they dont understand how NFS games stood out, for example.
Prostreet has one of the most fun drag racing controls ever. We would have tournaments and go hours and hours of just the drag racing. I also liked the highway races too as the sounds were insane the cars were making. They nailed it.
Porsche unleashed has actually a really great controls. You are supposed to play this with a wheel, then it becomes almost a racing simulation. It's therefore obviously more difficult to drive, but so much more rewarding.
