    GREAT JOB GUYS! I’m 54 years old, lost my medical after 35 years of flying Professionally(ATP Rated) and you answered the “old man” questions! I can’t imagine having to take the ADX (also ATP) written with no prior Aviation Experience…IMPRESSIVE! Proves that hard work and a Top Rated School will get you there! You guys just helped me decide to go after my second aviation career…I was about to apply to be a Walmart Greeter!

    Interesting. I'm kinda in the same boat.....getting burnt out at my current career as a service tech, I'm 44. I'm a huge aviation enthusiast and a technical kinda person. Theres a local school here in Cincinnati called Flamingo Air that offers the 200 hour FAA flight dispatch courses, a lot of it done online. With a ton of expansion here at CVG with the massive multi billion dollar Amazon cargo and DHL cargo facilities going up it might be a thing to consider for me. Thanks for the videos and Q&As. I'm definitely considering this.

      Hey Sona yes international students can get a job in the United States. But first they obviously would have to be an approved student and then they would have to most likely to get permission to work within the United States. But yes I know several dispatchers from other countries who work at airlines within the US.

    • @piphastings6734
      @piphastings6734  Рік тому

      Hey great question. Yes it certainly is, in my opinion. But I would go through the interview process or perhaps see if you can shadow a dispatcher to see if. you would be capable of it. I would also encourage you to talk to a dispatch school and see what their thoughts are. They have seen hundreds of students and could provide some opinion. In the United States, the Americans with Disabilities Acts requires that employers provide reasonable accomodations for employees to perform function if they have a disability or impairment.

    I work for a major airline currently and unfortunately they just wont be hiring really for awhile.... so I have military background and have my Dispatch license and I have actually applied for 2 regionals to go get that experience. Idk if this is a solid plan or not but I feel that when the time comes for the major airlines to begin hiring again they arent going to be as willing to take internals with no experience as they used to be... idk tough decisions...thanks for the video man.. You should look into dispatching for the Air Force (DOD flight management specialist). The pay would be better than that of a beginning flight dispatcher on the civilian side, However you will be limited to Hawaii, St Louis, Germany, and I believe there are two other locations.

    • @piphastings6734
      @piphastings6734  3 роки тому +1

      Yea that is tough. I will tell you that I am jealous that you have military background right off the back STS. Use that to your advantage. Sometimes it is as simple as who you know who works at a regional. I remember my hiring class there were six of us...and each of us had some type of 121 or 135 carrier experience, whether it was as a gate agent, or in ops, ramp agent or dispatcher. I will tell you that in my class, every, single one of them had some connection. For example, I had a friend write me a letter of recommendation who was a captain at the airline I work at. I don't know if that helped...but it certainly didn't hurt. My advice is connections from your classes or military. In addition, you have to start in maybe a small 135 carrier or supplemental 121 to get your feet wet to show that you are willing to put forth the effort and get some experience. Remember your license doesn't guarantee you a job. It just gives you a guarantee of meeting the qualifications. Keep in mind, that if you were hired, before you could even dispatch flights on your own, you would have to go through initial training which can be close to 3 months in the classroom and on the job...before you legally sign your name to a release. Once I was hired, I still had 6 weeks of classroom training and 6 weeks of OJT before I got signed off by a comp checker.

    • @piphastings6734
      @piphastings6734  3 роки тому

      Yes....especially if you can get to the major carriers like Delta, Southwest, American etc....after ground school and comp check, you start out in the high $60k range. Vacation and benefits both take time to build up as most dispatchers are part of a union. usually you have two weeks of vacation after a year of work.

      @piphastings6734  4 роки тому +7

      Kirk Blade ahhhhh dang what timing!!! Sorry bout that but congrats on your certificate that’s a huge accomplishment. As far as American and Envoy does I have not seen any openings. And American has said unless they get an extension of the CARES act, they will probably cut 150 dispatchers. I don’t know about Skywest, Republic, PSA or endeavor....I bet Skywest might have openings as they continue to profit and have success. One other option is, look at cargo companies to get your foot in the door, cause business is really good right now and they may have dispatcher openings like Atlas, Kalitta and smaller cargo companies like Martinaire or Ameriflight. I started after IFOD at a supplemental company called swift air. It helped get me my foot in the door. I guess the best thing I can say is keep checking company websites and be opening to moving. I hope that helps, it is tough right now, no question. So you have to be open to lots of opportunities and not just one airline.

      Vagabond P yea I actually know at least two dispatchers I work with right now who were crew schedulers before....it’s good experience. I would say that it’s generally a good idea to start w a regional airline as a dispatcher and gain some experience...I think it would be rare to be hired as a dispatcher at a Major right out of school. Future after the pandemic is bright!!! However I don’t know when that will be...what I do know is that it will take a couple years unless there is a massive jump in demand. I don’t think there are too many old dispatchers who want to give up their job and income. We are mostly union, so typically the old ones get paid the most and are the last to be let go. I still expect a lot to retire in the next five years. But to answer your question if you want to get right in, might want to look at a cargo or freight for some experience. The demand might be a little higher than passenger. That’s pretty cool you worked in the cabin for so long

I personally graduated from 2017 and I did my practical in the fall of 16 with Jake Zelman from SWA, He was awesome! If you get the choice of examiner I strongly recommend him. Remember, you can bring your book with you and reference it as needed and try to relax and show whoever your examiner is that you enjoy dispatch. I can say, I distinctly remember missing the very first question he asked me and he was very calming and just told me to stand up and shake the jitters off. You will do great! We don’t get a lunch break. And sometimes things are so crazy we barely get to sneak to the bathroom. It’s literally 10 hours in front of a computer

      Sorry I didnt see your message earlier. Yes those are both great schools. I like IFOD because it is located around three headquarters of airlines. Envoy, Southwest and American. Its very competitive and if you are lucky enough to get a job, it will most likely be at a regional airline.

    • @piphastings6734
      @piphastings6734  3 роки тому

      Hi Simon that's a good question. I wish there was an easy answer. The key is having your license first off. And then from there...make sure you keep the connections you have with classmates. Because say they get a job first. That goes a long way to getting you an interview. Most regional airlines will want some type of airline experience. It is rare to see someone applying at regionals get hired right out of school with no dispatch experience, however, not unheard of. Breeze, Republic and Skywest have all posted for jobs in the last two weeks I believe. If you don't get a job in dispatch right off the bat, see if you can work as a ramper for Southwest, or perhaps a gate agent for a regional at your local airport, or maybe a crew scheduler. That starts the experience train and puts you ahead of the game the next time an opening comes through. Let me know if you have any other questions I will be happy to help.

    Hey guys, I'm planning to get a course for flight dispatching, i'm a foreigner by the way and i don't live in the USA, but i'm trying to join a course in Sheffield school in Florida then i can get a job hopefully,
    Do you think for a foreigner is it easy to learn and to get a job there or no?
    Also if you can advise me which school will be better for me, i'll appreciate that.
    Thank you in advance.

      Meher Atia that’s great to hear. And yes I think you can get a job. I was just talking w a co worker as she has a green card and works w me and she is originally from Korea. Sheffield is an excellent school from everything I hear. I went to IFOD in Dallas and they prepared me well too. If you can speak English well but also know another language it’s huge to your advantage. The challenge w right now is the airlines are having to cut jobs so take your time and once you get your certificate just start somewhere if you can’t get a dispatcher job right away.

    • @jakeosaer306

      Adding to Pip's response, the biggest challenge for a foreigner in getting a dispatch job will be with a green card. Any airline will have to run background checks and drug testing like any other US employer, though they are more extensive for safety sensitive positions.
      The school you attend doesn't matter to an employer, as long as you can obtain your certificate. With that said, do your research on schools and choose wisely. Sheffield is a highly respected school in the industry that produces a lot of competent dispatchers. However, preparation for the FAA written exam (called the ADX) is not taught in the classroom at Sheffield. They offer a self-paced, self-study app to help with that portion of the certification process. Sheffield recommends that you take and pass the ADX before attending in person, and they tend to focus more on real world dispatching in their classes. If you have the discipline and focus to learn this portion on your own, then Sheffield will be just fine for you. If you do better with classroom instruction where you have the ability to ask questions to a real person in real-time, then Sheffield may NOT be a good fit for you. Whichever school you choose, make sure it is a FAA approved school.
      I went to ADTC www.adtcdallas.com and had a great experience. Would highly recommend ADTC to anyone and everyone looking to start a career in dispatch.
      Here are the FAA approved schools.

      Jake Osaer Is the FAA oral exam very difficult ?I have just begun studying the manuals and everything is going off my head ,especially technical stuff.I am just praying I am able to to cope up with the intensity of the course.

    • @jakeosaer306
      @jakeosaer306 4 роки тому +2

      @@vagabondp8335 I studied very hard throughout the entire course and my instructor prepared me well. Still, I was very nervous in the days leading up to it thinking I wouldn't do well. It turns out that the anticipation was far worse than the oral exam itself. So the moral of the story is study, study, study. They are not going to ask you any crazy stuff that you haven't covered. They are looking to see if you understand the basics of weather, navigation, regulations, etc. The examiner doesn't expect that you will be dispatching airplanes the day after you complete the exam. They know you will do "real" training after you get hired on with an airline.

      Hey Dave. First off, thanks for helping make the community a little safer where you live. To answer your question, it can be EXTREMELY fast-paced and chaotic some days and then other days.....I'm just counting how many jelly beans are at my desk LOL. There are some days I get zero calls from pilots and other days I've gotten upwards of 30-40 calls and honestly, much of what your day brings depends on the weather...because that will dictate what ATC does with flights(Ground Stops/Ground Delays etc). Your job becomes exponentially more challenging with bad weather because your number one priority is safety. I hope that helps.
