How Airline Pilots Work With Dispatch To Keep Your Flights Safe

  • Cockpit scenes filmed with approval, in partnership with Envoy Air Inc., under Part 91. It's definitely not just pilots making flights happen! There's a whole team working behind the scenes to conduct each flight safely. In fact, the FAA requires every airline to have a certified dispatcher for each flight. Dispatchers have one of the coolest flight operations jobs out there, and this career doesn't require a pilot's medical certificate! It's one of the best ways to get involved in flight operations. Here's how the job works.

This is one of the BEST ways to get involved in flight operations. And you can do it when you can't hold a pilot's medical certificate! What else do you want to learn about the operations side of airlines?

That dispatcher in the purple shirt explaining the routes on the computer screen is a champion in my book, has his own youtube channel if you search "Pip Hastings" if you are trying to become a dispatcher and want to know how to get involved or know the process of how to get your license and all that I would highly recommend. He was more than willing to answer my questions, and now I have successfully gotten hired as a Part 121 dispatcher at an airline :)

I was a pilot that had a medical issue come up early in life and that killed my career so I became a dispatcher. Over the years I moved up from a very small airline to a major international one/. It was a great choice. I actually got to ride in the cockpit of a wide variety of aircraft. I also got the chance to really see the world. It is a great job. Fascinating, rewarding, well paying with lots of travel and benefits. I can highly recommend it to anyone looking for a career in aviation.

Ryan14VT Sage advice.... turn the other way, get an inexpensive college degree in any major that interests you (engineering?) then earn CPL MEL CFI CFII during summers or on your own time. It will cost a lot less, gives you a degree that’s useful for something other than just flying, and there will actually be a good female ratio at school. At your age interests change, the industry can change, or medical certs. Can be in jeopardy. These flying colleges can be an expensive way to box you into one vocation.

The FAA dispatch system is quite unique. Over here in europe in contrast there will be OFPs (operational flight plans) prepared usually automatically by a flight planning system taking into account current ATC restrictions, weather and least cost options. The flight crew reviews it, and is free to change the fuel uplift without consultation of the OCC. Even if tankering is planned, they can decide not to tanker for whatever reason, or to take more fuel than originally planned as long as it is within the weight limits. Rerouting would require a call to OCC, but that is rarely done, usually just to navigate around or above or below an overloaded ATC sector to avoid a slot. Dispatchers can be certified under EASA rules, but there is no requirement to have certified dispatchers in the OCC at any given time.
In a previous airline i worked for there was usually at most one certified dispatcher present in the OCC who usually worked exclusively on longhaul flights who need a bit more tweaking to the automatic generated flight plans. 90% of our flights had no access to the certified dispatcher though. I am not even aware if my current one has certified dispatchers at all, since we don't do longhauf flights there is most probably no need for them. Since our OCC is three countries over, i certainly won't pop by anytime soon to check that out ;)

Really nice job, Swayne. You're providing a valuable narrative from the airline industry to the flying public - explaining how behind-the-scenes teamwork and communication contributes towards flight safety. Great way to advertise cool jobs as well!
From a GA perspective, while filing a flight plan is definitely not relying on the FAA to be my dispatcher, there was a common thread. On one flight, I cancelled from the air (and luckily captured the controller's initials), which was somehow not cancelled in the system. By the time I got back to home field, the Air Force was calling about to scramble the CAP for SAR.
Realizing how important filing flight plans are, and knowing how seriously it's taken behind-the-scenes, it inspired me to join the CAP as a 1LT Safety Officer.
This video was really valuable to the flying public, and also for us GA folk, to be a part of the system -- including asking for flight following.

Hello from a new subscriber to your channel! I'm not a pilot, nor aspire to be, I'm too old...but I'm an aviation enthusiast! :) I really appreciate all of your content, and the work that goes into creating each video. I do fly a lot between the west and east coast, and I take a lot of commuter flights to my final destination...and your content makes me feel just a little better about the pilot of my commuter flights :) Thank you! :)

I think a cool thing you could do is interview other pilots as like a podcast or something, about there paths to mainline/regional and general things that are happening in the industry like strikes new regs ext.

I fly to and from ORD from CMI regularly on American Eagle...great explanation of how the company works behind the scenes!

Just got off your Memphis to Chicago flight. Didn’t get a chance to tell you that I’ve been a fan of your videos for a couple years now and thought it was really cool that you just so happened to be one of the pilots for my flight today.

I love your video style! It is very clean looking, and very attractive to watch. Could you record one of the shorter erj145 flights, and post it, unedited, on UA-cam? I think it would be really cool to see everything that goes on.
