GLASGOW to EDINBURGH with Ryanair: 25 years in the planning.

  • Roughly 25 years after seeing an airfare between Glasgow and Edinburgh, I finally take the trip. Unfortunately no airlines sell tickets between these two cities, so I had to be inventive. After being inspired by Jet2 and Loganair videos on UA-cam, I decide to fly with Ryanair via Dublin, and arrive into Edinburgh almost 13 hours after departure. #ryanair #dublinairport #glasgowairport #edinburghairport

No way! Thanks so much for the shout out and link Scott!!! :) Loved this adventure, your story telling is so good, had me on the edge of my seat! By the way, I used to work in business travel as well, through some dark days too like 9/11 and Concorde disaster. Hey, so glad it looks like you're FINALLY going to get that Guinness pie - looking forward to the food video! We actually gave you a shout out this afternoon travelling back through from the west when we drove past Paisley! Love the Paisley Pattern sign on the M8 :)

Really you don’t know how good you have it. The railways in the UK are so good against those in Australia. Although Victoria is improving.

Funny, i actually did travel from Edinburgh Airport to Glasgow Airport with a British Airways flight about 20 years ago. I was traveling from Copenhagen to Glasgow but the Edinburgh flight got cancelled so Edinburgh passenger's had to get on our flight therefore stopping at Edinburgh to drop them off and take off any luggage then take off for a 20 minutes flight to Glasgow. I thought that was very rare.

After growing up in Essex, I was fortunate enough to attend Dundee University shortly after my 18th birthday!! Coming to the end of my first term, wondered how to get home for the holidays. Mum & Dad swung into action! Told me to get to Edinburgh Airport where a ticket was awaiting me (yes very spoiled!) I got on board an 'Air UK' flight to Stansted. Very shortly after take off I noticed we were descending. First time I'd ever visited Glasgow lol!! We landed & 20 minutes later we're back up making our way South to Stansted!

My first flight was from Glasgow to Edinburgh as part of a school trip. Was on a BEA Vanguard and the trip cost 14/- including a trip to Burns’ cottage.

I remember back in the 70s Cambrian used to route practically all their flights from Cardiff via Bristol. But unlike the BMA example you gave, it was possible to book the sector at a reasonable rate. The good old days! I remember doing a Viscount flight after a rugby international which went Paris le Bourget, Southampton, Bristol, Cardiff. Yes, the good, good old days.

Back in the 90s I flew numerous times between EDI and GLA, in both directions, with Air UK who would combine their middle of the day flights from each city to Stansted. I think the record time from take off to touch down was seven minutes with a 05 departure from GLA and 07 arrival at EDI.

Surely it is quicker and cheaper to take a train when you take into account the time lost getting to and from the airports and then the security controls.

My first flight in 1971 was GLA to EDI on a BEA Viscount . I think it went onto Aberdeen . Anyway, my Mum recognising how interested I was on planes organised the trip . It was exciting for me just catching a plane for the first time and going through parts of the airport I had never been before . The flight I think got to 4000 ft and lasted 20 minutes . In true Scottish summer fashion it was pissing down all day . The bus from EDI airport to Waverley Bridge took longer than the flight , but as a wee boy I was excited . Toured the Castle , went to Jenner’s dept store . And waited till it was time to get bus then plane home . Unfortunately on arrival at airport we found the plane got cancelled and instead BEA proposed taxi for the 3 passengers going to GLA . They weren’t impressed when my mother pointed out they had just spoiled her sons wee day out and could we go back to Edinburgh and get the train instead as being in a car on the motorway was nothing new to me ! They weren’t happy but agreed . Still a memorable day out for me .

In the early 90's Air UK did a triangular route from Glasgow, Edinburgh to Stansted. They then did the reverse route from Stansted. One day I was waiting for my wife in Glasgow returning from a business meeting in London via Edinburgh. I went and asked at the Air UK desk if was possible to fly just to Edinburgh from Glasgow? They said yes at £16 single - it was before airport tax. My daughter had never flown so for her 8th birthday I booked a surprise trip for her and my wife on a single journey. I dropped them off and then drove to pick them up in Edinburgh.

I remember those flights with British Midland from Edinburgh to Glasgow I also tried to catch that flight but was told they where no seats. The reason I wanted to it was I want and hope to have so good views as we flew over Glasgow. Anyway as always great and interesting view video. I also think I know the trick of getting a better seat but not recommend if travelling together or have a week heart leave it to the last minute. But I did this once and I did missed the checkin time because of poor internet connection.

And to think there is a Citylink bus running between Glasgow and Edinburgh. More journeys with more stops, and cheaper than by train. Tickets between both airports cost £21.60 (could vary from day to day, didn't check) and the journey takes about 2 hours. Of course you can travel from city centre to city centre too, which would be more practical.

I don’t know why i find it really annoying. But there are those passengers who have just put their cabin bag in the overhead lockers. Find it necessary to go rummaging when the seat belt light goes off in flight. Then there is always one who still rummages around in the over head locker after being told to take their seats for landing and seat belt light is on.

I was in the army 1960-66, we had to march 10 miles in our combat gear and rifle. And we had to do it in 2 hours, and i know how it feels. When we arrived at the destination, it was the firing range. Try aiming a rifle after that 10 miles.

What , that’s nuts. It’s 50 miles city centre to city centre. Good train service too. . Why on earth would you go to the Airport go through check in, Security, wait for the plane, wait on the plane for a 20 minute flight, then get into the city. The only time maybe. If the roads were bad & you needed to catch an international flight from Edinburgh.

    • @katbryce

25 minutes from Glasgow to Glasgow Airport vs 1 hour Glasgow to Edinburgh Airport. I would think the actual flying time between the two cities is probably going to be about 35 minutes. It would be mostly the take-off and landing time which is the same for any journey. Then if you have to get off the plane and onto another one, even allowing for the fact you are already through security, I would just take the bus to Edinburgh.
