Being critical of one’s own work is necessary to getting better at what you’re doing. You are also not responsible for how others feel. That is on them.
Well actually I 💙💚💜💛 the way the architecture paintwork turned out. The cafe kind of resembles an older type of architecture and the brushstrokes give me that atmospheric feel ......they belong. I love the exposure effect to that's quite cool. Yes you're right about feedback on your self critique I think you're being unnecessarily hard on yourself but if that's what keeps you moving forward in your creative style or art in general so be it ....but oh the pressure...
wahh this is my favorite outta the series! I like the gnome characters in a modern setting, which is interesting to look at as opposed to a fairytale setting.
The walls remind me of the rough, plastered walls in Europe, and my time living there, so I absolutely love them. But I also know you have to feel the art you are creating and I can't create if I don't "like" it. But I love your honesty!
I really like the composition and the lighting but see what you meant with the struggle with the gouache. I do like the texture that created on the walls though. I really hope to see more in this series. The characters are adorable and they can be put in so many situations 💙💙 more please 💙💙
Your painting is beautiful! And just do what feels right for you, no need to worry about us too much we are just like the cat in the background. If it doesn't bother you then let it be what it is. Also have fun on your vacation .
Hi, Chris! I just wanted to say that you're totally right not going too easy on yourself. I think this is the only way to truly improve yourself. As to the piece, it's gorgeous! Yes, I did notice that the pigment was uneven on the structure of the walls but I didn't dwell on it, just acknowledged it and moved on as the video went. To me, it just added a bit of vintage vibe to your piece. Nothing could possibly steal the charm from it. :)
maann! this piece is beautiful! I think in most cases, artists are hardly every fully satisfied with their own work because they have an ideal view of how they want the piece to turn out as, and it's something that most people cant see, because they have different visions.. if any xD Keep up the good work!!!
The vines are well done with the depth shown with the shadows on the wall. I also like how they hang down and you included two flowers. Just love that. And the cat! HAAHA! Adorable! And Hey...just an idea...I like how this turned out, however if you aren't happy with it, do it again in watercolor. It has been a while but I did one of my drawings in copic, watercolor and colored pencil. I was indecisive about the finish and so I just did it with all three mediums. I enjoyed watching!
It’s been years since this was video was posted but I hope you still have this piece because it Is simply amazing. You are your worst critic, but I hope you have returned to this piece to see how much you’ve grown since. As a fellow artist, I totally understand this feeling you feel about certain pieces after completing them. However, looking back it on it should not show you a failure, but a step to the right direction ( I love this piece btw) .an artist can hate the work but the work can find a heart out there :) keep up the amazing content friend.
i don't think you should ever hold back from critiqueing your own art in videos. all artists need to learn that the way you improve is by being critical of everything and always looking for ways to improve. it's not saying 'i think this is really bad' just 'i know it could be better, so i am disappointed' also i really love the composition, and it's super cute, but i agree theres something off about the colors or contrast. but it's still really cute and im sure people would still want to buy prints
Maybe consider rendering the leaves with some subsurface scattering? It could add a lot of brightness and contrast to the foreground, which might be what it needs.
Just found your channel and I'm glad I did. I rarely listen to all of the commentary but so far I always find you very engaging. Thanks for the great art and showing us your process!
I know it doesnt help a bit when you are not happy about your own piece, but oh my lord this is so lovely. I would def buy a print. I admire your work a lot. Thanks for sharing!
I'm so sad that you don't like this piece, because I love it soooo much! I would love to own a print of this. The lighting is magical and the characters are just so adorable. I can't believe how beautiful this piece is and it would make a perfect Valentine's Day gift!
I personally love this piece. It can be a taste thing. I don't know. As long as you are being honest, I think it's okay that you are hard on yourself, mainly if you can recognize when you love a piece too. But I do love this one and I think prints should be available 😁
This is incredibly so beautiful and cute tho. I seriously thought its digital art at first glance. The way you worked with the colours, blending, lighting, composition, etc... it's all perfect and comfortable in the viewer's eye!
I think my biggest critique is the shadow colors - the light coming through the window is very cool, so the shadows on the characters should be very warm, but instead you've painted them fairly cool, and almost too gray. I love your art style and it's been fun binging on your videos 😻. Also, calico cats are almost always female.
Really wonderful work! I love how you use Gouache. I'm still a Gouache-Beginner and its wonderful to see how it can be going If I Stay tuned to this Medium. You're a very good inspiration 💕
I can understand why there are some parts in the architecture parts where you might not like, Although I think it gives soul to the illustration! I really love it anyway❤️
I really love this picture! I respect that you are not satisfied with it, however, as the creator that is your choice. I also appreciate the little lesson you incorporated about the lights as and shadows as well as sharing your inspiration ideas. As a beginning artist and illustrator that is so valuable to me. Thank you.
Hi Chris, this is super cute 💞 Also 'Sadie saves the day' has a really good review on these W&N paints, this may help you understand where the struggles come from.
I'm in love with this piece. So sad to hear you're not completely satisfied with it, though I can relate to the feeling. If you do ever decide to release this as a print I would definitely buy it.
Would love see some more of the sketches and color thumbnailing (maybe your thoughts on the process?)! Love love love your videos, I look forward to them every friday
It's really awesome and it's so well explained, I never really have the courage to go and make illustration because I feel like I lack a lot of aknowledge and you explained so well every choice you made. It's really pointy and really interesting. It's just so educative and yet it's super chill. Plus showing you preliminary research is the best thing you could ever do. Instead of just showing a nice pic and a speed paint you really made it easy to understand and to follow and so easy to synthesis the steps . Instead of just being "wow it's amazing, I would never be able to do that" you manage to turn this into "Wow it's amazing, and really complex, but yet I understand a bit of this complexicity and this light and shadow play, values play, and so I can really appreciate this piece and I know why it's so magic" I really love you, I m going to follow now and watch every single video, I love you
I really adore, and am inspired by this piece. But I totally totally understand and respect how you feel. I deleted something off of my instagram I spent soo long to paint, despite me getting more likes on it than usual. It just didn’t meet my expectations, and wasn’t a reflection of my vision. And I feel so much better looking at my instagram. :’) However, this sometimes works if a piece doesn’t look right, just take it into some sort of app that gives it a filter, and that might help. I use Pixlromatic, myself. Usually just for bringing color-less sketches to life. I personally like the filters better than instagram ones.
Hi Chris! This is my first time commenting, but I've watched all your videos and love them. As a fellow artist, I can definitely relate and get where you're coming from. Many, many viewers have already said it -- this is a great idea, cute characters and wonderful visual storytelling in the series. Instead of giving up on this particular illustration, have you considered painting the scene again, but in watercolor? The transparency and luminosity of watercolor might help you acheive your lighting goals. And to make the scene feel more intimate, you might want to consider cropping the composition, zooming in on the characters and their expressions. If you flood the window with light, so we don't really see what's in the background, that might help too--no more distracting vertical lines right between the characters' eyes. The background doesn't help tell the story, so this composition could benefit from the "less is more" approach. LOVE the cat and the adorable characters--and I'm not even a cat person! Keep up the beautiful work. Can't wait to see what you create next!
I have actually considered ALL those things you said LOL as I was fiddling around with it on photoshop (when I was trying to fix it to turn into a print) I did notice it looked better more zoomed in! I VERY RARELY paint the same thing twice, BUT I do feel like this one's such a missed opportunity so who knows, I may return to it one day, and it'd be a cool video maybe too down the line to show the difference XD thanks for your input and for watching! 💕😊
Being critical of one’s own work is necessary to getting better at what you’re doing. You are also not responsible for how others feel. That is on them.
It’s too bad you’re not happy with this piece because I absolutely love it!! Probably my favourite of the three.
thank you! :)
Ugh your my no.1 inspiration!!! You need to do a sketchbook tour soon!!! I can’t get enough of your semi realism style sketches!
Beautiful & full of touching atmosphere! Happy vacation!
The composition and lightening is fantastic, and the characters are so cute! Maybe the leafs and wines are to dark... love the cat! 😂😘❤️
I think this is the cutest picture.

I think it's so lovely! It's just so cute and how the cat is too. I adore it xxx

This is seriously the cutest! I hope you revisit it and see how amazing it is.
I think this is really lovely. The texture of the paint is beautiful.
Awwww...Poor Kitty. Don't worry, we'll fall in love with this piece for you.
I just LOVE this piece !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The architectural elements were painted nicely! The texture gives a character of an old classic cafe. I love it!
I love the lighting, it dose remind me of Norman Rockwell
I think it's the black and white Arches border showing that's throwing you off. Hum. Something to consider. I think it's adorable and perfection.
I think that's super normal for you not to enjoy certain pieces and I think it's fuel to make better pieces. Do you Chris!!
It’s a wonderful painting.
cat makes it so vivid
You’re are so good at traditional art and you’re on of my big inspirations to keep going when drawing traditionally love you keep up the good work
Gosh, I love this series! I'm a big fan of the sparklies you put around the gnomes, too! ✨
I think it's a joly nice painting! 😊 really like that light source option. Challenging but very nice
this is my favorite peice of yours!!!!
That looks really cool. Not bad at all. Love that style too.
I love this piece.
I actually really like this painting.
I really like the composition and the lighting but see what you meant with the struggle with the gouache. I do like the texture that created on the walls though. I really hope to see more in this series. The characters are adorable and they can be put in so many situations 💙💙 more please 💙💙
I love that you show your process and teach us about certain things like lighting. Very nice!
All I saw was magic ♥ You draw amazingly!!! Lots of love from Brazil =)
I miss Notting!! ITS SO great and cute😍
Its AMAZING girl! Love it so much

I understand you don't feel satisfied with this piece, but you need to understand that some people might love it despite that. It's so beautiful 💝
i love this painting, my favourite part is how the faces just kind of pop out at you? it's very nice and satisfying in a way :)
i don't think you should ever hold back from critiqueing your own art in videos. all artists need to learn that the way you improve is by being critical of everything and always looking for ways to improve. it's not saying 'i think this is really bad' just 'i know it could be better, so i am disappointed'

PLEASE SELL THIS ONE!! I LOVE IT
Wow this is stunning!
Towards judging my own artwork I am exactly the same way. I feel that if we are critical on our own artwork that will help us improve further.
I personally think you did an amazing job with this picture.
i like the cat on the painting
nice ! it was hypnotizing watching you paint this and I love how it turned out!
Wow you did really really well on this one... well you do every time, but i love this so much! The face highlights and shadows are so amazing god
I would love to see you “re-do” this in transparent watercolors. I’d like to see how different the two would compare.
This is absolutely beautiful and amazing 😱😍
