Crazy. I actually used that bathroom last time I was at the wharf. I never would have dreamed that one day it would fall off into the ocean and float back to the shore.
Many years ago I remember leaning up against the railing of the very adge of the wharf talking to a friend of mine at night 😢 it's sad to think it's gone but glad people were rescued.
Thanks for posting. 20 businesses and about 400 people are out of work due to the wharf closure after the collapse of the Dolphin restaurant, finally freed, back into the ocean, and the bathrooms at the end of the wharf, the section being repair when the wharf suddenly collapsed...More Federal disaster relief, wasted. "workers" were on the collapsed section, one woman swam back to shore..

You get extra points for listening that far! He's on break rn so his response was brief and I don't think he watched it yet. He said: "Wow! Thanks. Merry Christmas to you too."
Great job with the video! When we lived in San Diego we would always stand on the piers during storms with big waves, unless they closed them for the really big storms. We could feel the whole structure move from each wave and thought it was sort of fun. You would never catch me doing that again after this!
That section of the pier has been closed to the public for a while while they got started on a repair effort. The three people on that section were the project manager and two engineers, per a local news story.
There's some articles on it, but that section was closed off and the three victims were workers. All three got out okay: one swam out (I can't spot them in the video), and the other two were rescued by the watercraft.
My niece and her co-worker were the ones who the jet ski rescued. They were both working on the construction site on the wharf when it collapsed. You can't see it as well from this video angle but I've heard her first person account.
I'm glad they're all okay! I'd love to hear their perspective firsthand if they're willing to share. Please send me an email or dm, my contact is in the description 😊
@rzimbauer thanks. Yeah it's an absolute miracle that they both came out fine. I think cuz the wave came up to the height of the wharf deck, it broke the sections of the wharf off and floated them like a raft. My niece can't talk publicly about it because there are now lawyers involved.
@@jillkelly1329 Got it, makes sense. I am curious: in my video I was focused on the individual near the center of the wreckage who hopped in the water towards rescuers at 2:24, and we can kind of see an individual closer to the separation and bobcat at 0:48 who was also rescued (as seen in other videos from fishermen on the wharf). The news coverage mentions a third individual who swam out and self-rescued. Do you know where that third person was at the time of collapse, and if they're visible in any footage?
@rzimbauer my niece is the one who flagged down the jet ski and leapt across the floating boards to get on the back of the jet ski. She's 5 ft 10, very athletic and also a surfer so she has incredible balance. We all laughed about it at the Christmas dinner table cuz everyone thinks she's a dude in the video, probably because she's wearing her hard hat and a safety vest. She and her co-worker were the only ones at the end of the wharf at that time because everyone else was sent home early because of the swells. We've talked about the apparent third person and I think because two lifeguards came in on the jet ski one of them body surfed off the back and swam toward the co-worker because there was too much debris for the jet ski to navigate so he swam to rescue the co-worker, which might have looked like a third person. Then the jet ski looped around and picked up both the lifeguard and the coworker before heading back to shore. My niece said there was also a lifeguard on the wharf further down toward the land who saw the wharf collapse and dove in to try to be of help. That might also be what people think is a third person. But it was just my niece and her co-worker on the wharf when it collapsed. Believe it or not her co-worker was actually filming at the time because they were so amazed at how the wharf was rippling and swaying, so she played me his footage, it's really a miracle.
Wow, great video, nice work, thanks! Man, someone shit the bed…they are gonna be legends, whoever collapsed the wharf is gonna be a legend on job sites for decades…”that’s that dude…”
Wow! Best video out there of this horrifying event! For me, a new fear unlocked! How would a one armed person swim in that surf!? I would die in seconds.
Commenting on my comment lol. My daughter and son were commenting about piles floating in the waves and parts of the pier waving that were semi attached 24 hrs prior…..110yr old pier that’s some good longevity
Originally, it appears that there are three people stranded on the collapsed pier. Plus a crane and a bobcat. The crane and bobcat sank. One person was picked up by safety personnel on a jetski. What happened to the other two stranded individuals?
My footage focused on the person to the right, and the person on the left was hidden behind a post in my view. This video shows both at the same time ua-cam.com/users/shortsPTdp2oTJDu8 I want to make a video where I sync the two and show them side by side, including some other footage
47 years ago , 3 of us drunk in a car sleeping at the end of the pier.my asshole friend causing shit on the cb radio to a dude called treetop tall.we got kicked out of town by the cops or treetop tall was gonna kick our asses.we left town . My apologies to treetop tall , my friend was a jerk.
I think they're talking about the machine visible at 0:38 My guess is that it weighed less and its little raft held longer. Some fishermen on the south side of the wharf have some good footage of that part
This is the first I've seen of the small boom crane or telescoping forklift or whatever the heavy piece of machinery was that went down right where the end broke off. The original video and what the news showed was once the floating piece of deck still had the skid steer and the restrooms, but your video shows a second, much heavier piece of equipment next to the skid steer when the end of the pier first landed in the water, but the crane obviously being heavier broke trough and sunk out in the deep water. It will have to be recovered. ...and it has oil, fuel and radiator coolant in it leaking out. Somebody's in big trouble!

I remember the Santa Cruz peer in the 70's having those huge relief holes with the heavy duty green painted railings. Picnic tables all around. In high wave conditions the water would shoot up and soak tourists that weren't paying attention to the wet puddles as they quickly went to the railings to see the huge elephant seals stretched out on the laterals tying the pilons together. I would visit the stagnarrows outside fish market and get a dounginious crab a loaf of Colombo sourdough French bread and a six pack of beer, I then would sit at the picnic tables by the relief holes and watch the fun "meaning the soaking of unsuspecting tourists" as I enjoyed my meal. I hope others that frequently visited the Santa Cruz peer in the olden days also remember that happening. I'm wondering now if the planning or engineering of the peer was changed causing lifting of the peer?
Dude, I bought the T-shirt...,good job...,ABC is probably jealous....,the narration is lacking with the surf speak, but then again, you are at Steamer Lane on a good North swell...,but the hand held like feel is just what we need...,cinema verite...,and yes, that was a crane and and a front loader that is now calling on Davey Jones locker....,

@@jillkelly1329 Thanks so much for sharing!
Wow, great video, nice work, thanks! Man, someone shit the bed…they are gonna be legends, whoever collapsed the wharf is gonna be a legend on job sites for decades…”that’s that dude…”
Yea, all the way up to city and prime contractor .. they will be lucky if no one gets jailed..
Wow! Best video out there of this horrifying event! For me, a new fear unlocked! How would a one armed person swim in that surf!? I would die in seconds.
The repair crew took the asphalt off the wooden floor. This distabilized the integrity of the structue. The weight of the bob cat didn't help
The supports under this section were damaged a year ago which is why the restaurant was removed and it was roped off for repair.
Probably not the most comforting feeling to be driving a heavy fire truck on the wharf after that has just happened.
Agreed. 8:00 "they've got a full fire engine up there, so they gotta be pretty confident at this point"
Great video. Thanks
Wow your the dudes ! 🫶🏽🇦🇺🙏
In all the years that I have been on the Santa Cruz Wharf I never thought that it would collapse but here we are! DANG! 😲😲😲
Excellent footage! 👍🏼
I was out as far as I could go next to the construction on Sunday afternoon. Wild. Part of me wishes I was there, but kinda glad I wasn’t….
Commenting on my comment lol. My daughter and son were commenting about piles floating in the waves and parts of the pier waving that were semi attached 24 hrs prior…..110yr old pier that’s some good longevity
Epic wave day For the entire monterey bay . The mouth of the San Lorenzo river now has a seafood restaurant.😂
I don't think that is funny. 🤔
@oogieboogie848 No one cares what you think
@@oogieboogie848So dense, I didn't "get" the seafood restaurant implication until I read your comment😆. J@fredcarruthers8285 comment sure was witty.
lololol the camcorder gave this 90's early 2000s vibes
timeless truly 📹
DUDE! Thank you for the video....
Amazing footage!!!
Great job getting the full timeline. I bet your video ends up in the eventual court case
Hey Ryan, thank you for recording this.
You're welcome!
Good capture
This makes me sad. I've been on that pier many times.
Dude, you guys should start a podcast!!!
Pretty good for SD video. Great report 👌 Yeah, sometimes difficult to identify things on a tiny screen with bright light on it
this guy gets it 📹
If I had to hear a video narrated by a guy from Santa Cruz, this is exactly how I would expect it to sound like, bro.
When you said, "..Are there people? Those aren't people..", there were clearly THREE PEOPLE moving around upright! Where did the other 2 go?
3 construction workers suffered minor injuries. And they needed clean underwear after that.
Thanks guys!
They sent a rescue swimmer to him, from the jet ski initially. You can see the rescue swimmer with a yellow hat on in the water.
Way better than tv reporters!
That water would be cold AF , at least you will have a new artificial reef made out of heavy equipment
This video shows both at the same time ua-cam.com/users/shortsPTdp2oTJDu8
I want to make a video where I sync the two and show them side by side, including some other footage
@@rzimbauerThat was awesome footage! Jetski bro, you're a hero! 🌹⚓
Two were picked up by jet skis. One ended up swimming to the beach.
I can’t believe they didn’t move that crane before the “Eddie Swell” hit. I mean dumb dumb dumb
How did the skid steer stay afloat for so long the crane was gone quick but that skid steer rode it out
What's a Skid steer?
I think they're talking about the machine visible at 0:38
My guess is that it weighed less and its little raft held longer. Some fishermen on the south side of the wharf have some good footage of that part
@@rzimbauer ok, thank you & have a wonderful day!!
😂😂😂😂"We lost the craine! Its on ots way downto you".
When in what year was the Santa Cruz pier built?!
1 dude in a Toyota p/u with a surfboard??? I'm sure he was pivotal to the operation
OMG you guys are filming while baked😂
Wild that the pier is still floating
Glad the person still on the pier was rescued by the ppl on the jet ski before it sank!
Okay The wharf just fell into the water 🤔🤔🤔 grab the fire trucks and and drive them out on the wharf.... No boss you drive them out on the wharf......🤔🤔😒😒😒🤔😒 Are these the same people that put the cranes out there
and this is why the first amendment is so important ...if this happened in china lets say these guys would be arrested and we never would see the video if we even hear about it atall....fight for our rights ppl we cant afford to lose them
What is the weight of the construction crew equipment?!
Decent swell 🤟
Just in time! Mother Nature is becoming most angry for not having been cared for. 😢
I smoked many times behind that building,,,,to get away from wind...🎉🎉🎉🎉😢😢😢😢😢
did the dinner go too or just the bathrooms
Incredible
Are the other two persons well?
Dude, I bought the T-shirt...,good job...,ABC is probably jealous....,the narration is lacking with the surf speak, but then again, you are at Steamer Lane on a good North swell...,but the hand held like feel is just what we need...,cinema verite...,and yes, that was a crane and and a front loader that is now calling on Davey Jones locker....,
Sweet, I'll print one up limited edition. I'm glad you enjoyed the style 😁
So that crane is underwater at the end of the pier,, surreal!!
Maximum List and Trim were exceeded for the crane? Fellow crane operators will get the joke.
holy frick

@rzimbauer I grew up in S.C.in the 50 and 60s and that part of the wharf I've been to many times. There will have to be alot of changes made in rebuilding because of climate change affecting weather and waves. They'll need to change harbor too.
@@undersixtyclimate change is a natural cycle, the elite twist global warming to be cause by human so they can tax and control the mass
The guys on the pier have one hell of a story
Is that jet ski a rescue service or just good Samaritans? Great that they saved somebody.
That’s the Biggest Wooden Surfboard I’ve ever seen. Stand Up Paddle.
Bros like “those aren’t people” those are people!
The fishing is much better over here Dude!
