- And we're back! Welcome to 2017, Bike Show style. Lots of new bikes and brilliant stories coming our way this year and we start with possibly one of the most significant; BMW's G310R. It's the smallest-engined bike they've ever built and it could send BMW sales into the stratosphere. But is it any good and does it deserve to wear the BMW badge? Mat travels to L.A. to find out more.
You're spot on. Owning a BMW badge is an aspirational for us Indians and this bike would be sort of a status symbol. I Guess if the pricing is right BMW would achieve that sales figure riding out of India alone.
It's kinda funny to hear all these 'low power' 'entry level bike' comments from pretty much all over the world, while here in India this would be considered a really powerful and aspirational bike, something that people would actually graduate to from the crop of market dominating 150cc bikes.

I know what your saying, I have a 675 Street triple which is fun to ride but I also ride a Honda Grom which is 125 cc, guess which is more fun to ride :D the smaller bike of course..
here in the philippines, 125cc are more common. you can feel when you guys have been here.. 300cc is also considered powerful

Excellent point. This is a dream bike for many in India. BMW is a luxury brand. Common people can only dream of owning a BMW and since it's manufactured here, it will be affordable. On par with KTM Duke 390 pricing. There's a huge hype and expectation that this motorbike has created.

It might be "underpowered," but the CB300F could be thrown in to the mix, too! Just to see the comparison on quality, handling, and maintenance premiums!
Well hell, if you're willing to let the CB300F into the fray we are going to have to see what the Ninja 300 and the Yamaha R3 can do up against the newest member to the 300cc family.
Scratch that... now we have a Yamaha MT-03, this 300cc segment is blowing up granted i live in the U.S. so it's all news here
I wasn't talking about the CBR300R, though! I just wanted to get a Naked Bike comparison going. I agree that the Ninja 300 and Yamaha R3 are superb machines, but both Yamaha and Kawasaki have yet to bring a Naked 300 to the market in the US. I know we have the 125 for Kawasaki, but I wouldn't mind a naked 300 :) I prefer the naked bike over the sport variety, but that's just me.
Same difference! most of the time the naked bikes use the same platform as the faring version. So why limit the comparison to just naked bikes. Having them all compete is still an accurate representation of which bike will come out on top and a good "reference" point. Also Yamaha has plans to release a naked 300 (MT-03) in the UK which might hit the US market. If so Kawasaki might have to follow and release a naked z300 and that sounds super exciting.
Onyx Haze yeah, I guess you're right lol either way, it'd be good to see as many of them juxtaposed so that we can see the key differences between them all, then make an informed decision on which attributes we want to live with Day-to-day. If the MT-03 comes to the US, I see major issues for this BMW. The fact that BMWs come standard with ABS helps, but the Yamaha is just too good (if you upgrade the tires).
wonderful bike i should say, well made, it impressed me for the quality make and design, i didn't Expert to be a 300cc when i saw it!
This bike is perfect for Indian market if priced right. India has better bikes with more power in the market but what matters is, Which type of people is BMW targeting?. With TVS backing BMW in India, surely there is a positive growth as like KTM with Bajaj now. From the year 2000 - 2015 the motorcycle market was dominated by 150 CC segments in India and from 2015 India is looking for 250CC and above segment bikes, already long term BIG players in India like Hero, Honda, Yamaha, Bajaj, KTM, TVS..etc.. has introduced their 250CC above bikes and they are moving hot. Now it is BMW's turn to prove they too can play a major role in Indian two wheeler market.
Personally still I own a 125 CC Hero Honda Super splendor for 10 years now and looking for an upgrade something like this! (A comfortable and powerful commuter and for occasional long touring)
When Indians themselves think India is shit what do you expect from foreigners who know only what they watch in movies? I am in India and trust me we make good stuff, we might suck at marketing but it doesn't mean we are any less and this is why BMW Motarrad chose only India to be its manufacturing outpost besides Germany
Thanks! At 75, I'm riding every day a 2010 192 Kg Yamaha 660cc but I think that, if I'm still in shape when I reach 80, this baby could well be my last bike with its 2 cm lower seat & its ready to go 164 Kg weight i.e. 28kg less :)

I want this bike, it’ll be my first. I’d like to turn it into a little scrambler when I’m ready to upgrade in a season or two. That or get the 310GS in the first place.

I have one on order and yes, I am a beginner. As for its competition ....oh I'd say it's the Honda CB300F and the KTM 390 Duke (naked upright bikes). I think Kawasaki will have a new 300cc bike for 2017 too.

THIS VIDEO does say "in Asia this can be an aspirational bike.." First time I heard it, North America and Europe label it beginners bike. I had a kawasaki KLR 650 with the same HP and it did fine for 11 years and close to 60 k miles, but a little bigger ... I hope I can own one of this, they are at the same price as other 300 from Honda and Yamaha in Mexico (my country) but with more power.

I would actually not mind having this as a daily commuter, with a superbike for weekends etc.. :) Anything over R70 000 will make this bike fail in South Africa though...

I would expect a journalist to either know, or check. - Google works pretty well. I know you were referring to recent bikes, but you didn't say "recently" or "current line up", did you?. @deepak sharma It has Automatic Headlamp On (AHO), the bike equivalent of DRL in cars. This feature is mandatory in Europe etc, and has been made so in India too from April 2017. Not only this bike, EVERY bike has AHO. Wait a few months, and ABS will be a mandatory feature too. bah.

Kawasaki Z300 is the main competitor and sells for $5400 USD in UK. The G310R is $5340 USD in UK and $4750 USD in U.S.

I'd say ALL motorcycles are over-priced for what you get, but $5,000 USD is pretty much the bottom price for a new street bike these days. Best to wait until a "Like New" one ends up back at dealership because the new rider got a scare riding it. Happens all the time at my local dealership; bikes with less than 200-300 miles are sold back and then priced $400-$500+ less than original cost.

Its cheap indian bike with label of BMW. TVS is a cheap indian brand who has history of building only low quality cheap bikes for india and every indian knows that.
Do you really think BMW would risk its strong brand reputation with a poorly-built bike? Just because it's built in India, doesn't mean that BMW has relinquished all quality control. It's not like they gave the plans to TVS and said; here, build this and when you've finished, send them out to the world. No, we don't need to check them! This is exactly the same as Honda, Triumph, KTM, etc building bikes in India and the Far East. Don't hear you complaining about those...
