    There are a couple of corrections I need to point out. During the video, I say the Taycan is the only EV with two charge ports, and that's not correct, the Audi e-tron (also from VW Group) also has two charge ports - one on either side of the vehicle.
    Additionally, I said there are no 400-v DC fast chargers in the US that can deliver more than 50 kW. The fact is there are a few of them - very few, and I maintain that the 150 kW 400v DC Fast charge option is still definitely not worth it. There are probably around 4,000 DC fast chargers currently in the US, and likely less than 20 that are 400-Volt and can deliver more than 50 kW - and most of them can deliver 80 kW or 100 kW, not 150 kW.
    Finally, I'm happy to report that you can get the Mobile Charger Connect with a longer 25' cable at no extra cost. I highly recommend you opt for the longer cable if you buy the Mobile Charger Connect.

      Ha ha! Right after you said that I thought, "Pretty sure I've seen some 400v that do 80+kW on PlugShare!" I agree it's absolutely not worth the near $500 part. Good correction! ;)

    Tom, my 2019 Kia Niro (64kw) owners manual says “Battery performance and durability can deteriorate if the DC charger is used constantly. Use of DC charge should be minimized in order to help prolong high voltage battery life” is that a recommendation to minimize DC for all EV’s to follow or just Kias? I have installed a Flo X5 on a 40 amp circuit but have internally restricted the X5 charge rate to 16amps/240v (3.8kw/hr) which charges my NIRO overnight to 80% to maximize my battery life. Is that a recommended Best Practice in EV charging?

    • @StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney
      @StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney  3 роки тому +2

      Frequent DC Fast charging will help to accelerate battery degradation, but I stress the word "frequent". If you charge at home on level 2 daily, and once or twice a month you DC fast charge then you have nothing to worry about. As for lower amperage, while charging on level 2, most battery experts will tell you charging on 16-amps or 32-amps will make no difference at all. The enemy is heat, and level 2 charging - even at the vehicle's full charging rate just doesn't generate enough heat to cause a problem.
      It's actually more important to try not to charge in the summer if the car is baking in very hot ambient temperatures (95F and above). Try to let the car cool off a bit in the garage before charging if you've been driving it in extremely hot weather for a while. Set the delayed charge timer and let the car charge overnight when it's cooler.

    Every Taycan owner should watch this video. They will learn more about charging their car from Tom than any dealer. Even as a Tesla owner, I learned several charging facts. High power EV source equipment must wait battery technology to catch up. Even if you charge at a Tesla V3-250 kw station, the batteries can only handle that power for about a minute. When they can handle that amount of power for 15 minutes without damaging the battery, we’ll get 250 mi of charging based on 1000 mph.

The Tesla Destination chargers can be locked so they only work with a Tesla - please look for the sign next to the destination charger: red background = locked, white background = open to all vehicles. Around here, it will be open to all vehicles if Tesla provides the destination charger for free and the property owner pays for the install. If Tesla paid for everything (the install as well as providing the destination charger for free), they will have the red sign indicating Tesla vehicles only. For bigger installs, half of them typically are open to all vehicles.

    Another great video. I have a basic question. You mentioned that this car comes with a 40 amp level 2 charger . Will this car also work with a 30 amp level 2 charger? Is there a safety feature in the level 2 charger that prevents this vehicle trying to draw too much power out of it?

    • @StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney
      @StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney  3 роки тому +3

      Yes, it will work just fine. When you plug the connector into the car there's a communication process where basically, the car asks the charger how much power it can deliver. It then requests the maximum the charger can deliver and it can accept. So the Taycan would just ask for 30-amps for a 30-amp EVSE.

Everywhere else you will find people bitching and complain that Tesla does not let everyone use their chargers Tesla has spent an incredible fortune building out their charing network before there were even cars to use them and they are greatly expanding their DC charging stations. Everyone else is waiting for things to come along just the way that gas stations were built to fuel the new horseless carriages. Great video and thanks for providing all the valuable information and advice. I ordered the Taycan with the 150kw option that will apparently only provide valuable to Porsche's bottom line. Thanks for this advice though. Two other points, Porsche's Intelligent charger comes with a profile configuration that will only take your vehicle to an 80% charge. This is better for the battery if one is travelling short distances. To achieve 100% charge, you just turn the profile setting off. WIth the shortage of new vehicles, if you order a Taycan, one of the features is a charging cable that is 7.5 meters long. It is still a $0 cost option and allows full flexibility for charging multiple vehicles in one garage, either port.

Why does everyone need their own connector. Just admit, Tesla won here and go with them. That's what I'd do.

    Here is proof that this level of detail in a video is needed: while at an EA charger in CA. a former Tesla owner who switched to a Taycan was struggling to charge his car, giving up after a few minutes of trying to force the CCS plug into the charge port. He had left the protective dongle cap in. He also did not know about 350kW EA chargers or how to tell them apart from 150kW. Your video addressed both issues.
    Please reconsider referring to chargers as "400V" and "800V". That is determined by the car's pack voltage - the chargers themselves are usually 500V or 980-1000V. It matters if pack voltage is over 400V and

    Tom
    I noticed you did not mention the optional 19.2 kw charger which is an expensive option BUT would seem to be an unnecessary option based on what I hear you saying
    BTW Thanks for a very good overall explanation for what Porsche has turned into a difficult to understand very expensive possibly unnecessary group of E-options

      A 19.2 kW charger will require a 100A circuit - which is a tall order for most home electrical systems.

      So i have come to learn....I am shopping this car now in florida and every single dealer is loading this option with their Taycans. Actually after watching this i am having difficulty bringing myself to order the mobile connect charger especially if the home charger they include at no charge with the car is adequate at home. I already owned and sold my Etron which i think has the same included connector as the standard Porsche unit and had no issues. Toms video seems to confirms this

    huh? America doesn't have 400V chargers over 50kW? so if a Model 3 plugs into an Electrify America station it will charge at 50kW? or do u mean to say that Electrify America is the only provider with 150kW chargers and they also have an 800V charger at their locations?

    Thanks for the informative video. I have a question I hope you can answer as I’ve heard conflicting opinions. I have a 2022 Taycan and a NEMA 14-50 charger for my garage. A place I visit frequently has a TT30 type RV outlet. Can I just buy a male TT30 to female 14-50 adapter and be good to go? Or does this risk blown breaker or fire?

    Fantastic Tom. And thanks for the index. Very helpful
    Does your opinion on opting in for the 150 kW/400V change if Tesla opens up SC?
    I saw this comment and was curious
    Some would suggest getting the On-Board 150 kW/400V DC Charger from E-Mobility in case future use of Tesla Super Chargers becomes an option.

  • @50yearoldskier
    @50yearoldskier 2 роки тому

    Sir. The argument I hear about the need to option the 150kw/400v option is because it will allow us to use the Tesla Superchargers when Elon opens them up. Your thoughts? And while a nice insurance blanket. Not sure if needed. Especially since it does look like EA is improving. Thanks for your great work

    Now that Tesla has actually started to add CCS adapters to some of their Tesla Superchargers in North America (400V > 150kW) I think it now makes perfect sense to get that 150kW option on the Taycan.

    Hi, thanks for the video. I’m an electrician and recently installed a 50 amp circuit with a 14-50 outlet for a customer’s 2021 Taycan. It’s working fine. Now, when she visits her brother, who has a 30 amp circuit, it keeps tripping the breaker. What could be going wrong here. Thanks for any info that you could supply.

    14:46 did not age well. You told people to cripple their car's ability to charge to save 460 dollars. Now those people can't use tesla ccs capable superchargers which will outnumber all the other ccs chargers that are 150kw or faster by the end of 2023. Turns out dealers were smarter than you.

    But what encouraged you to by a Taycan given your past experience with EV's? Not necessarily the cheapest option out there.

      I would love to be able to afford a Taycan! I had this one on a media loan. I get all of the EVs for a week or so. Up next is the ID.4, then a Mustang Mach-E. I own a dual-motor Model 3 because I think it's the best overall value for a long-range EV today. If money was no consideration, I'd probably have a Taycan. I've driven the Turbo, the Turbo S, and now the 4S and they are all fantastic vehicles, IMO.

      @@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney looking forward to your ID.4 review.. I had considered looking into that as I liked the SUV like setup and the lower cost.. Should I invest in the installation of a 14-50 adaptor and get the $35 Tesla 14-50 adapter?

    Great video Tom. I will never be able to afford a Taycan, but a lot of your info for public charging stations applies to other cars too. At 36:10, close up of charge port, was the front door open? Hard to tell. If not, I noticed an un-Porsche-like panel gap.

    Hi Tom; wonderful video. I have a question for you. I have Tesla and a Taycan with the regular battery. I use the small TeslaTap at home to charge my Taycan using the Tesla wall charger. At work we have three large ChargePoint stations (free). Each station has two cables (one in each side). The right sided cable is designed to use for Tesla vehicles through an adaptor also provided by ChargePoint (this is what most people use). The left sided cable is the DC charging that I can use in my Taycan (on the right port), however the cable is so short that I cannot plug in the right charging port of my car. I am wondering if I can use my TeslaTap adaptor (the one I use at home) and plug in at the end of the Tesla adaptor and then plug into my right port of my Taycan. In other words, the right sided cable into the Tesla connector and the Tesla connector into my TeslaTap adaptor to be plugged into the right sided port of my Taycan. Thanks in advance.

    Thanks Tom. What is the length of the cable on the standard charger that comes with the Taycan? My friend has a ranch with a RV 240 50amp plug and I’ll need to a park about 15 feet away so 8 feet won’t cut it. I’m close to ordering a Taycan RWD.

    Tom, This video has been a tremendous help. I have a new Taycan CT 4S on allocation and have opted to go wit the standard mobile charger rather than the optional mobile connect version. I have been advised that the mounting bracket is no longer included. Question is: Should I go ahead and purchase the Chargepoint Home Flex (to get max 11kw per your previous comments) or pay for the mounting bracket?

    Great video. So I have to buy the optional mobile charger connect if I want to precondition the car, start and stop charging remotely, and to check battery status? That sounds very odd because Tesla can do this via the car as opposed to via an optional cable. Could you clarify? Thank you.
