    I keep most of my alcohol inks in silicon ice cube moulds. They are flexible and hold the bottles so they don’t fall over.

    Lazy woman's comment here...I have a wonderful pair of antique pliers-they are thinner than today's heavy ones. I use them for stubborn acrylic, watercolor and alcohol ink tops. Your cleaning and color coding tops is wonderful for those times when my creative muse hides yet I still want to be productive-will definitely use the tips!! Thanks so much!

    This is perfectly timed (for me). I just bought a set of cheap alcohol inks and have been playing around with them this week. I love the Marabu Rainbow you showed, so I've added some to my shopping cart for my next purchase. I absolutely love your idea of putting the inks in a palette and letting them dry. You're brilliant. One thing I did learn is that to make your own blender solution, you can add 2-3 drops of glycerin to 2 oz of alcohol. Now I'm looking forward to reviewing all of your past alcohol ink tutorials.

    the refills of kuretake markers are also an alternative to copic.
    Japanese markers are basically the same, leplume inks are produced by kuretake.
    kuretake markers are very similar to the old magic marker.

    Using cheap felt instead of the expensive Ranger felts works great. I can't tell the difference. I keep my alcohol inks in a shallow drawer. To keep them from tipping over I put them in used K cups (after composting the coffee and filter first of course!), which keeps them upright. I change felts each time I change color and put the used felt in the cup with the ink. When the felt gets stiff I just put a couple of drops of alcohol on it and it keep dabbing away. Now to get some wite out to mark all my ink refills. I bet it will work for the water based ones as well. Great idea!
    Thanks for all the sources for ink. That rainbow additive looks lovely.
    I love all your Dollar Tree supply hints. I get lots of inexpensive supplies there. They now have those fancy cosmetic brushes too! The handles are thicker, and the bristles feel a little different, but they seem to work the same. They are sold individually and come in 3 sizes. The brush part of the biggest one is 1.25", which is good enough for most of what I do.

    Great tips! One thing I want to add. If you are using the pinata metallics or the newer TH metallics, the claro extender or TH version actually binds it. Using isopropyl will work with it great, but part of it rubs off on your fingers.

    I love your comment about your craft room not being a Pinterest worthy craft room... because you nailed it when it comes to my craft room! I can't afford all that matchy-matchy Ikea furniture nor would I want to do it that way because I'm a messy crafter too. I would spend all my time cleaning stains off of that white furniture and I can't handle the wood look because it makes my room too dark. I would rather spend my money on craft tools and consumables. Lindsay, if you and I were to sit down and have a chat I could talk your ears off! I had just typed in a huge comment and decided I'd better not post it - it was so very long, and I was all over the place with my thoughts. Pain meds do that to me. Suffice it to say that you have some awesome tips, as always, and I really appreciate your perspective on crafting and keeping expenses manageable. It's amazing what can be done using the tips that you so freely share with all of us. I am a problem solver like you and have found ways to make things work for me. If others walk into my craft room they may think it's a hot mess, but I know where everything is and it's well organized and that's enough to keep me happy. Now I'm going to go and color code the tips of my alcohol ink bottles and my other re-inkers that I have because frankly, I'm tired of pulling out the whole bin and then picking up each bottle individually to see what it is. Thank you for this awesome tip! I think I spend at least as much time organizing and improving my craft room as I do actually crafting. I have an 11x14 craft room where I sew, create greeting cards and other paper crafting, and I take care of all the family bookkeeping and general running of the household tasks. Fortunately my husband loves to shop so I don't do any of the marketing unless it's in a place like Home Depot, Lowe's, or craft and thrift stores. Crafting gives me sanity in light of the fact that I have pain and mobility issues that change the way I get around and mingle socially - and crafting is my happy activity. Thank you again for all of your wonderful tips. If you came to my house you will see many of your tips in action, and yes...that is an invitation! ♥️

    I saw a demo at Cheap Joe's You Tube on using alcohol inks to dye the plain cotton masks from Old Navy. After dropping ink onto the masks, the demonstrator used metallic fabric markers to make pretty designs. I thought that was so cool. I was afraid to get out my 3 alcohol inks and try it for fear that I'd suddenly end up with a collection the size of yours. I'm glad you have the lovely collection so I can own it vicariously 🤗. Copic needs to watch their stuff because so many good markers are out there these days. I have the Ohuhu brush markers because of one of your demos, and they are awesome. Only need Copics to fill in the few blanks. Interesting ideas.

    Hey Lindsay....I was 'shocked' when you told us about the Copic refills! I honestly feel it's a 'cheap trick' coming out with new packaging but with only half the ink in it. I'm positive there are many out there that don't even realize this so I for one am so happy you shared. I do like the Jacquard alcohol ink better than Ranger's as I find it is more pigmented or, as you advised, they are brighter and have more vivid colors. Anyway, I learned more about alcohol ink in this one video than I have watching many others. I've said it before and I'll say it again, you should have 'The Lindsay Encyclopedia' for artists and crafters alike. I'm always in awe of your vast knowledge with respect to ALL mediums, tips & tricks, how-tos, DIY formulas....I could go on too LOL! I hadn't gotten graham crackers in awhile, and when I opened the box recently, I was surprised how empty it was. Maybe it used to be a pound but now its about 14 oz, there was an inch gap in the top and each graham cracker is much more narrow. I guess they havent' gotten around to shrinking the box yet.

    I’m with you on the copics. I had been using some other alcohol markers for several years and finally decided to invest in copics. A few months after starting my collection they changed the refills. I was really disappointed. I had started using the brush tip ohuhu markers before making the switch and really liked them but was drawn to copics for the refills. It would have been cheaper in the long run to go with copics but now I don’t think that’s the case. 😕

I've been following you for many a year and I love to see the hair styles change and such that you go through. So pretty. Now, to the reason I am writing. I know you liked the Marabu ALcohol inks pretty good, especially the Rainbow. Did you know they came out with a new release in June? Glitters and metallics and neons. That set is 50% off as is still the originial set. The 50% off finally went off on the first set but with this second set added they are all 50% off at Joggles so just wanted to let you know.

    • @LunaBianca1805
      @LunaBianca1805 4 роки тому +2

      I just answered Rob Ots question, so I'm going to be a bit lazy and copy part of the answer here ;)
      Alcohol ink is what is used in Markers like Copics or Ohuhu. It is a fluid drawing or writing medium(=ink) that is based on alcohol as the solvent component, the stuff in which you dissolve the dyes or pigments (or whatever gives your ink the colour it has) and which makes it fluid so can use it in pens, like markers or fountain and dip pens :3.
      I'm not an expert on the different ingredients of the stamping pads, but basically pastel or chalk pads should be filled with colours made out of chalk (which is a pigment made out well the pretty soft, white or greyish type of natural stone, it dissolves into water and can be mixed with other pigments to create colours and then just dried to make chalk sticks like sidewalk chalk or the chalk you would use o the blackboard in school - or you dissolve it in a solvent and put it in an inking pad). Pastels are more or less the same, albeit usually softer. They are pigments pressed into stick form and if they are not oil pastels, they are usually quite powdery when you.draw with them and they smudge easy :3

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  2 роки тому +1

      Any difference is small. I heard the ranger has a resin in it so it shouldn't be spray applied but it dosnt effect refilling a marker unless you are using an airbrush attachment. These contain ethanol or denatured alcohol, pigment and a touch of glycerin (I believe) for smoothness. I've mixed all branfs and had no issues. Each brand mat vary slightly but there wouldn't be a problem mixing.

      TheBusinessProse I hazard a guess that it was greed! I am outraged.. I’m new to alcohol markers I’m disabled and don’t work, , I spent all my savings on copics at the beginning of lockdown, only to discover the ink rebrand situation, I would never have bought the full set if I had known.. you are right, more companies will hopefully redress the balance, and bring out more inks and refillable markers at a decent price range... Science tip: For the record any alcohol that is derived from a woody based plant (think trees) are usually toxic and not meant for consumption. Isopropyl is one example of a woody alcohol. (Wouldn’t sample the copic ink)
    Basically when a plant doesn’t have enough oxygen to produce nutrients it produces alcohol as a byproduct. Grain / grass like plants tend to give us the various types of alcohol we consume as do small vegetable / fruits. However something the size of a tree when it doesn’t have oxygen creates that much more and at a higher concentration than small plants. This is usually lethal or poisonous. (Can blind you.)

    I am supremely ticked off at Copic! Like words can't even express. I'm on a small disability income but when I looked into alcohol markers because they were refillable because you could replace the nibs I thought this is the way to go plus no other markers out there began to compare at the time. I could see decrease it a little bit rather than raise the price but to go less than half the amount and the prices almost the same as it was. Not that they care but I sent them an email calling it unconscionable and reprehensible and all of the other words I could think of to let them know how incredibly disgusted I was. I also let him know that these days they've got competition. I haven't tried some of the other alcohol markers but I've seen your reviews of them. That super nib brush tips were one of the things that really could not be duplicated by anybody but if I understand you correctly there's some that have pretty much gotten it down now. I'll let him know that you know what you ain't the only acting Town anymore you do well to mind your p's and q' s. Don't piss off a bunch of Crafters cuz we're creative, and we will find a way around you. I really wish now I had waited a year to get into them because there's no way I would go with Copic today. I was lucky to get about 30 markers when Hobby Lobby clearance the sketches out for $2 each on some colors. And again got about 35 or so from another place on sale for just under $3 for sketches, but the rest I paid 5.85 a marker. I was able to get maybe eight of the 25 ml refills and now all the rest I'll have to do the 12 ml

    Well, I am clearly in the minority. I am not at all upset about the change in the Copic refill bottles. I figured a price hike was coming because the price has been the same for about 10 years now. That’s unusual.
    The first misconception I wish to clear up is that Copic Markers did change the price too. The MSRP for the new smaller refill bottles is $6 US. The MSRP for the old Various Ink Refill bottles was $8 US.
    I think most of us savvy crafters buy Copic Markers and refills at retailers like Dick Blick or Jerry’s Artarama. These kind of retailers offer a steep discount. The old bottles normally were $8 but I always paid less than $6. I usually saved between $2 and $3 on refills.
    Now though, no one is discounting the new refill bottles as much. MSRP is $6 and Dick Blick has the refills for between $4.71 and $5.55. They are not offering as big a discount as they used to offer.
    The new bottles come with quite a few benefits compared to the old refills. The new longer nozzle makes refilling markers easier. The caps are closer in color to the ink which means you won’t have to register the new refill bottles. It’s easier to see into the bottles too which is both better for seeing ink color and to see how much ink is left.
    Copic is responding to their customers who use the refill bottles for alcohol ink techniques both in resin and on paper. The redesigned bottles are easier to work with.
    Let’s not get it twisted. It’s still much cheaper to refill a marker than to purchase a new one. The new bottles will refill a Ciao marker 9 times and a sketch marker 7 times. That makes each refill cost between a 1.03$ and $1.39 US. That is still a good bargain even if it isn’t as great as before.
    Then there’s the environmental factor. Refilling our markers is a way to reduce our consumption and we should be demanding that all marker manufacturers switch to making refillable markers.
    Bottom line: Refills are the better choice from both a cost perspective and an environmental one.

    Question #1: What is alcohol ink? 😮 Sorry, you just lost me. 💚

    • @LunaBianca1805
      @LunaBianca1805 4 роки тому

      For using alcohol ink?
      Copic ink does have a characteristic alcohol odor (very negligible, though). Unlike a paint thinner, it will be broken down and will not accumulate in the body even if you inhale this small amount. Its characteristic is more like ethanol for disinfection. Odor of Copic ink is basically free of anything harmful, but if it makes you feel sick, we recommend you to ventilate the room.
