    Split is so beautiful. Croatians have such a beautiful country! Would absolutely love to see the visual 23 landing if you ever have a chance to record it :) Thanks for this fantastic approach video.

      Thanks for watching and your good feedback! The country looks very beautiful from the air! I assume it is the same when on the ground! Originally, we expected runway 23 due to the forecasted winds. Here is the link to an approach to runway 23 which I recoded a while ago with only one camera ua-cam.com/video/XRDrwhrEPC4/v-deo.html
      As soon as I get the chance to produce a 5 camera video of a runway 23 approach, I will - for sure - do that. Have a nice day!

    Another really nice approach video to the RWY 05. 👌🛬

    Thank you for the great views from the cockpit and of course the great insights into your work! 🏆

    What I really liked and like are the displays of the charts and instruments.

    Beautiful approach and incredible quality as always! I've been to Split this summer and it's beautiful. By the 1000' RA callout we have an incredible shot of the old town of Trogir. When I was visiting the city I couldn't help myself but look up to the aircrafts landing on rwy 05 😁. I was waiting for your video on this approach and here it is! Above 10,000 feet, we can talk about whatever we want. Sometimes it is quiet, sometimes we talk a lot. It depends on the mood of the pilots. We take our naps at home. Not in the cockpit.

    Hey! I really like those videos and I always watch them in the weekends. Really nice to see the communication such as the Airbus briefing from the FCTM and more to later apply it in my simulator. I was wondering why the briefing is started so late though, AFAK doing it before would make more sense in case that the STAR were to be incorrect etc. Thank you for the content!

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  11 місяців тому +1

      Thanks for watching and your feedback! In general, we communicate as crew the whole flight. We discuss about all options and possibilities. Especially during the flight in the video, we discussed the (way more complicated) RNAV-circling approach to runway 23 in depth and did the setup together. In addition, we prepared the approach to runway 05. If the wind is not clearly in favor of one landing direction, we have to wait until we receive the ATIS or ATC is telling us which runway and arrival routing to expect. After that, we confirm the final setup. Here we put the ILS to runway 05 in the primary flightplan and the RNAV circling approach to runway 23 in the secondary flightplan. So the briefing in the video is just a compressed summary of what we discussed already before. Regardless of the state of the briefing, we always confirm together all ATC clearances. This includes directs to certain waypoints, standard arrival routings, instrument approaches .....

    Excellent as always with stunning views. I notice you discussed Brindisi as your alternative. However, when your colleague briefed the fuel prediction, on the fuel prediction page you have Bari LIBD selected as the alternative.

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  11 місяців тому

      Thanks for watching and your feedback! Before the flight and during the flight, we discussed several alternate options. Most of this is not visible in the video. Here are more insights: Our original calculated alternate was Dubrovnik. Due to forecasted thunderstorms at our arrival time, we took the alternate fuel for Brindisi, which had the best weather forecast (no thunderstorms) plus a good amount of extra fuel. Bari was another option with less distance and a weather forecast a little better than Dubrovnik. The photo of the fuel prediction page was done sometime intermediate. The fuel value is our entered value for Brindisi, but the alternate airport is still Bari. This was updated again after the photo had been taken before we started the descent. During the briefing, the first officer was reading the correct updated page which showed Brindisi airport and our entered fuel amount to fly to Brindisi. (I am sorry for not showing the updated picture of the page in the video) Due to the improved weather at Split and Dubrovnik airports, we even would have changed this again in case of a diversion to Dubrovnik airport.

    I have a question I've been wondering for a while now: About the first item in the landing check list ECAM MEMO and the response "Landing, no blue". I understand that it referrs to the ECAM display, what does the callout "Landing, no blue" mean? What else could be there that would have to be taken care of in that phase of flight?
    And what do the subitems refer to that are seamingly always ignored? would those be the points the ECAM would show if missing?
    Also, If you some camera catches the ECAM displays it would be great if you could show them, too, if relevant.

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  11 місяців тому +1

      Years ago, we had to say "all green" for the same thing. In general, the ECAM shows a checklist with items which change from blue to green when the items have been done. For example, if we would not extend the gear, it would be shown in blue. The same is true for the flaps. In this airplane, also the cabin ready message is integrated in the landing memo and would be shown in blue if the cabin would not be ready. The subitems in the checklist are not ignored. They are included in the ECAM landing memo. If the ECAM landing memo would not be available due to technical reasons then we would have to read the subitems and check them.

      Thanks for your comment! The airlines have to make their own callsigns unless they use the airplane registration. Most important is to "be yourself". Do not try to be somebody else. Know what are your personal advantages and disadvantages. Ask other people who did the same procedure before. They usually can give you great tips and even can tell if there are questions in regard to aviation knowledge. Engine Anti Ice needs to be switched on in possible icing conditions. Means visible moisture and OAT is 10C or less on ground. Or TAT is 10C or less in flight. If SAT is below minus 40C, no anti ice required in cruise or climb but in descent.

      Nobody below us means that we do not have to reduce the descent rate to avoid a TCAS resolution advisory when approaching the target altitude. Sometimes there is another plane at 1000 feet or so below our cleared altitude or it is climbing to 1000 feet below our cleared altitude. This would be ok. But we would have to reduce the vertical speed early enough to reduce the closure rate.

    Endless flare before touchdown. Bad.

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  11 місяців тому +2

      You are completely wrong here. If it would be a private Cessna 172 on a very short runway, you may be right. But in commercial aviation, we do not plan a touchdown on the threshold. Also, we don’t want to „crash“ the airplane in the runway. In regard to distance, this was a pictureperfect flare. The landing took place at about 350 meters behind the threshold. This was even better than precalculated. Usually, we touchdown between 450 and 600 meters. If it is longer than 600 meters, the name „endless flare“ would be acceptable. And „bad“ would be the right definition for a touchdown after the end of the touchdown zone. Please keep in mind that you would touchdown at 300 meters behind the threshold, if you would not flare at all and continue along the glideslope with the target vertical speed until „impact“.

    • @tropenband
      @tropenband 11 місяців тому

      Little hard to tell, with the aiming point markers also moved further down the runway (as can be seen in the newer google earth view of Split airport), as it is kind of "hip" with European airports since several years. Resulting in even later touch downs... for some reason, the US still keep to the traditional system of placing the aiming point markers closer to the threshold. If you see Videos of landings from the 60s and 70s you will see, that it was not yet a standard to waste as much runway as it is done today (also see vintage aerial photos of airports, and see the locations of the tyre marks). They also flew "big" jets these days, not Cessnas. There is a nice video (passenger view) of a landing in Hamburg, I will post a link if I find it back.

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  11 місяців тому +1

      @tropenband The position of the ICAO standard aiming point depends on the runway length. Up to 2400 meters length, the aiming point is at 300 meters and for runways longer than that, the aiming point is at 400 meters. But some airports may be different.

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  11 місяців тому

      Here the runway is longer than 2400 meters and the aiming point at 300 meters. A reason may be that the airport wants everybody to do a short landing to avoid a backtrack.

    • @tropenband
      @tropenband 11 місяців тому

      @@ApproachandDepartureVideos yes, that is correct, depending on the runway length. Until some years ago, all larger (european/international) airports used the standard runway markings as follows: threshold bars, fixed distance markers (1x), aiming point bars, fixed distance zone markers (4x). Today: threshold bars, fixed distance markers (2x), aiming point bars, fixed distance markers (3x)... with that being done, the aiming point was moved further down the runway, and with it, the majority of the touchdowns is also further down the runway. Can be seen very good on aerial photos of the same airport, before and after markings changed to the new system.
