I think we have all felt lonely at some time or another. I love the idea of bringing up the topic because we sometimes can easily trick ourselves into believing that we are different from other humans, but i think if you've ever felt something, chances are most people have felt that way too💚💚💚

I am from California, USA and I have definitely felt lonely before. I also have my Ancestry DNA information. So wild! It connected me to my sister, mom, and 2nd, 3rd, and 4th cousins right away with names we all recognized. Amazing! Also... I am 10% Irish. Hehe! 💚 63% England, Wales, and Northwestern Europe, 10% Norway, and 8% Finland were my other top results. I was surprised because my great grandmother Mary and her family and her husband's family were 2 generations in Portugal but I found out through this DNA that they must not have been that much Portuguese because I only had 4% Iberian Peninsula with more confidence in Spain than Portugal.

It’s so weird because I’ve always only wanted 0-1 children but after being at my grandmothers house and seeing all of my cousins running around and seeing how my grandmother always has her children/grandchildren visiting her, it makes me want an absurd amount of children so I they always visit me when I’m older

I used to not be able to be alone for more than an hour or so... I went through a divorce and found that I actually love me!!! It took therapy and lots of reflection but I now know that it is ok to be a lone sometimes. I still have moments that I feel alone but I generally am alright. I am remarried to an awesome man who wants me to be the best me I can be and he has helped me so much to navigate through tough times! I am loved for just me, as I am right this minute! This is a brilliant video, really got me thinking. I’m from South London (DNA is Uk, Ireland and Norway) and I was thinking that loneliness hasn’t always appeared to me as being on my own but sometimes just feeling like the people around me have different interests or are at different stages of their lives so there’s that lack of relatability. I would hate to be without family though, that must be a really tough sort of loneliness.

No, the Scottish WERE Irish. And about 40% of the DNA in Scotland is still Irish (Gaels).

MAGNI Of course! I was talking more recent heritage, my great grandfather was born in Belfast. I believe there was Scotia a queen of Ireland as well? It interesting how there can still be prejudice against Scots with more recent Irish heritage, especially in the highlands. I know people who have changed there second name ‘Mc’ to ‘Mac’ to get employed more. I find it silly as most of the Scots heritage is Irish whether it’s recent or not!

They were told that there were never Irish there!, that the original Scots were not Irish.

In july it will be a year since I moved to Portugal and now I am living in Northern Portugal (I'm from lisbon) and I have never experience this amount of loneliness in my life. From the U.S, more specifically Oregon, not sure what my dads side is, but my moms side is Mexican. Moved to Hawaii 4 months ago for a job and boy is it a bit of a struggle to not feel lonely. Thankfully there is this little hole in the wall studio that sets up jazz jam nights every week that I'm able to sit in on and play the drums, it has gotten me connected with some of the nicest people as we talk about music. Hopefully some of these connections turn into friendships.

  • @stafar49
    @stafar49 5 років тому +2

Thanks for such a fun video! I love when your Dad makes an appearance! 😂 I’m from the US and I’ve used a DNA test (not ancestry but MyHeritage) and a lot of us Americans don’t have much or any Native American so my percentages were a lot more spread out lol. And a huge portion of my DNA is Ireland/Scotland/Wales but I already knew my great grandparents on my paternal grandma’s side were Irish immigrants.
I had my doubts too, but I’m half Filipino and figured if they caught that they would be fairly legit- and they totally did, they just don’t have much of a breakdown for the Philippines.
Anyways thanks for the lovely intro about how we perceive others to be happier and more fulfilled-- I’m pretty level headed and sometimes I find myself falling into that mind-trap.
I get lonely sometimes but I’m usually pretty happy in my own company. I guess I just hate feeling like I’m struggling alone to swim in a sea that would rather swallow me than help me float. Most of the time I’m bobbing along trying to see the best in things and hoping for a desert island to get marooned on, and sometimes I feel like bad things keep happening but only ever to me (slightly narcissistic but there ya go) and everyone else is cruising by on boats and yachts and I’ve got 5 year old learn-to-swim floaties and am at the merci of the waves.
😂😁 Aw, yes. The glory of an extended metaphor.
But yeah, it’s a good reminder to check oneself whilst throwing personal pity parties... just because things aren’t great doesn’t mean there’s no bright side and no hope for better.
I hope everyone that’s feeling lonely can find at least one person to talk to. It’s amazing how having someone to chat with can make such a difference!

I've suffered from loneliness ever since my husband and I moved to Utah where we don't have any family or close friends. It's incredibly difficult to make and maintain friendships as an adult. :( I used the Ancestry DNA test and found out (well, affirmed haha) that I have a lot of European blood mixed with Native American. Not a huge surprise there, but there were a few unexpected parts of Europe where my ancestors are from. My grandma is really big on genealogy and learning about the family, but that only gave me info on my mom's side of the family. I'm guessing all those unexpected bloodlines were from my dad's side, which I know nothing about. Anyway, I love how you paired DNA and unexpected family with loneliness. Very interesting video!

Bullying sucks and everyone tells you, oh you will get over it, just wait till your an adult. Nah i am 47 and still have to tell myself it was all bs and I am fine. Just know you are fine, and they were jerks, being autistic just means you see the world in a different way and honestly there is NOTHING wrong with that. The world needs folks with unique sight.

@@aliciavelice3806 SO TRUE! It is difficult to separate other peoples views of you from the reality of who you actually are sometimes. There's always difficult days when I forget that it's all lies (even if it wasn't at the time) because I was barely a teenager and have changed a lot and learnt a lot. People like to hold mistakes over you when you're that age but as you get older you realise everyone changes and everyone makes mistakes. There's always certain comments that stick though. Getting diagnosed recently has helped an awful lot though since before I just thought I was crazy!

I didn't know I was lonely until I met my lovely boyfriend two months ago. Oh boy, now I know how lonely I was. I feel that a big part of me was hidden but now it's free. It's funny because I've always been very independent but now in a relationship with him I feel freer and more myself.

I've definitely struggled alot with really isolating feelings of loneliness and depression off and on in my life the last few years, I think I really realized it when i started avoiding spending time with ppl I cared about and had many negative thoughts about myself and people i loved. It's scary when your loneliness hits the point of isolating yourself. The very thing that helps with relief is what you avoid. It even got to where I would be in a large group of people I knew and felt like I no longer could connect and felt alone even surrounded by loads of people. Also I had an extremely difficult time leaving friends or family after sharing meaningful amounts of time together, when I would go home I would feel so painfully alone. It's taken alot of work on myself and trying to undue the damaging things I've ingrained into my way of thinking but slowly it's gotten better but it's always an active battle! ❤

I’m Australian (my dad is Canadian and my grandfather is Dutch) and I have definitely really struggled with loneliness since moving out on my own. I do enjoy and value my own personal time. But like Melanie said, I’ve found it hard to feel like I make an impact in the works and really struggle to reach out and further develop my interests and meet similar minded people. I’ve started making more positive steps towards though and am making a more conscious effort to connect to the people that mean most to me! Trying to value experiences and life!
Thanks so much for the video! Very reflective and thought provoking! 💚💚💚💚

I'm from Sweden, hej hej! And I have definitely had times when I've felt lonely. Now that all my friends are scattered all over the country it is harder to see everyone. And even with the people close to me, I still feel lonely sometimes, which is perfectly normal! And if you are someone that often feels lonely, maybe join a club/organisation/class and meet some new people! I've also been getting into "friend-dating", and have made a new friend that lives right in my town :)

I’m American and I was born and raised in the U.S. Previous generations (great-great grandparents) of my family have emigrated from Czechoslovakia and Germany, although I don’t really know about my mom’s mom’s side of the family so I’m curious about that. And yeah, I have felt lonely at times. I still sometimes do, mostly in a romantic sense, but I feel a lot more supported and connected in the last few years of my life (I’m 30). There is always an opportunity to meet new people if I’d like to as well, with social media and with going out and doing things, especially exploring my interests, and with generally trying to have a positive attitude towards meeting people. I think it’s good to spend time alone too, but being alone versus feeling lonely can sometimes be two different things, at least to me.

My mammy is Irish and my dad is Algerian, and they met and got married in Germany and had me & my two brothers there and we lived there until i was about 6 and then we moved to Algeria but part of the agreement between my parents was visiting Ireland at least once a year. At first when we couldn't really afford it, yk with the moving and getting the house and blablabla, mam used to visit Ireland alone. But then we statrted going even twice a year or 3 times over 2 year period.
I don't really consider myself as german, that part of me has kinda faded away.. i'm 20 now.
But i've got plenty of Irish and Algerian in me, it's fairly equal.
I've got a big Algerian family and a big-ish Irish family and I actually love the feeling of having family around all the time it's very comforting (sometimes it's a lot to take in but for the most part i love it)
So to answer your question about feeling lonely, just like you said I'm quite happy having loads of alone, me time. But i'm not sure i can actually handle completely alone alone time for a long periode. Last summer i was home alone for a full week because I had exams to finish up, while my parents and brothers were away, the moment it hit me that i was completely alone was when i found one toothbrush in the bathroom, my own one.
I heard no tele sounds in my parents room while falling asleep, no louds sounds of my dad getting up early to shower in the morning, no sounds of my brother getting yelled at for staying out too late... just puuuuure silence. I could hear myself think tooo much. That's where I truely felt lonely.

And i have green eyes and the dark ginger beard. Its nice to know where my family came from. Currently living in Illinois. And yes i fell lonely every day and depressed. I'm from the United States, specifically New York, but my roots are mainly Irish, but also English, Italian, and French-Canadian. I often feel lonely, as well. I do have a lot of people in my life that I'm close to and I'm very thankful for that. Although there are many times when I wish there were more people I could relate to on a personal level. Just remember mates: the more you are authentically yourself, the fewer friends you have. It is better to be yourself and have a few friends who love you for you, than being fake to make everyone happy, and have a bunch of acquaintances.
