    While I understand the game China is playing, I find the concern of the West for Africa as rather shallow and fake. It's not so much that the West cares about African people but rather feels threatened by a new rising player.

    • @hihihui1
      @hihihui1 3 роки тому +265

      Well said. The west has never cared for the welfare for other countries or its people. It’s always had agendas even before the rise of Russia and China. Only now this “concern” for Chinese expansion is a last ditch and desperate effort to hold onto what little power they have left. Honestly I feel China as a world power might be a nice change. At least they don’t go around invading countries for oil.

      Man 1: "Aww, you idiot, you fell in the quicksand. Gimme your hand before you drown and get me in trouble."

      @@hihihui1 Lol..they just militarized the whole South China sea, relentless provocations against all nations in the seas around them, threaten Taiwan with war almost on a weekly basis, and rekindled the conflict with India (where people died) just last year--not to mention what it's done to its own people.
      Is it as bad as the US invasions, no. But this situation isn't a "I like China" vs "I like the US" predicament. Both are quite flawed, but also have positives IMO. And if you take the position of "Country A: Good,, Country B: Bad", you're seriously missing so much about geopolitical dynamics.

      It's like you people plugged your ears the whole video. China uses debt to coerce and blackmail countries into giving up information, taking certain positions in the UN, and publicly defending China in order to make China seem less evil in the world's eyes. I am Kenyan. The railway funding story is true. However I put all negative outcomes at the feet of Kenyan leaders and ultimately myself who chose these leaders. My fellow Africans, we need to frame our own narratives and not rely on other people's interpretation of events.
    Everyone including the US has massive Chinese debt. The problem we have in Kenya is we walk to the negotiating table like emasculated beings.
    This is a business relationship - they have capital , we have undeveloped high growth, high return industries.
    Nobody is going to help us including bleeding heart Americans with a woishe attitude towards us - they are annoying and super emasculating.
    We need to grow some balls and negotiate as true equals at the table.
    Chinese are not evil. Unchecked empires invading your land is evil. At least this time they are not holding a gun to our head.

    Keeps asking what is China's motive, but he never really hits the mark. There are 3 types of motives for China.
    1) short term economic motives involves exporting China's excessive construction capacities. These projects keeps the Chinese construction sector growing, all those constructions needs materials and expertise, a railroad projects requires concrete, steel, to the smallest things like seat covers or the fire extinguishers, all of these things can be bought from China.
    So China is using its massive US dollar foreign reserves to boost demand in Chinese goods and materials, but doing it abroad. This is seriously a smart move.
    2) political motives, Africa as a continents has the most sovereign nations of all continents, 54. That's very useful in the UN general assembly.
    3) long term economic goals. China seeks to develop Africa into a market for Chinese goods as well as capital goods, this needs to involve building up a stable supply chain for manufacturing in Africa. These economies would then need to buy Chinese machineries.
    Factories set up through Chinese investment, would also prioritize Chinese machineries and materials. This would create a symbiotic relationship between China and Africa.
    So the ultimate goal for China is to build up Africa, which is why the often touted, "debt trap" doesn't make any sense. China wants to make a good return in their investment, NOT hoping for the African country to default on its debt, something that hurts China financially. And would be detrimental to the long term goal of China in Africa.

    • @xingchenfan7923
      @xingchenfan7923 3 роки тому +10

      Very well said! Falling into the debt trap is definitely the last thing that China wants to see happens on those countries. But there is a potential drawback. As the ecnomical tie between China and Africa gets stabler, the racial tension between two peoples will emerge since the human resources are more frequently exchanged. This is something that non-Chinese usually can't see. Chinese society is very conservative in terms of racial equality.

Some of them seem to forget that the IMF and World Bank require countries to privatize and pass austerity measures and when America doesn't like a leader they overthrow them or kill them off including the democratically elected ones such as Zelaya in Honduras in 2009. Then there's France that basically controls some African countries' currencies.

      @@xingchenfan7923 This is some colonial mindset the Africans need to shed off. China is not their next colonial master. China is just trying to help Africans building up their own countries (with trade). Chinese and Africans should be equal, which means there's no reason for the Africans to want to immigrate to China. China is not trying to impose another racial class system world order, by wanting to become "Chinese" doesn't help the Africans climbing up the colonial racial hierarchy like they did with the westerners last times. If Africans truly believe in themselves and their country, they should put all their heart into building their country into a prosperous one, like China did. China has its own immense population problem and is not an immigrant country to begin with, so do not try to immigrate to China and that's really not part of China's offer.

    1.We needed the infrastructure to support development.

    3. They built the railway because if it had been left to Kenyan contractors they would have inflated the price and cut corners on build quality
    In short it's better to hand over our ownership to the ports (if we default) but still have a chance to continue developing than to wait for the west to give us high interest loans and still own us.

    Kenya has quite a stable and diversified economy compared to what many nations think and is very able to pay the Chinese debts in full. If Kenya's economy has not fallen with all the embezzlement of funds, corruption and cartels in all the income generating sectors then trust me it won't fall coz of Chinese debts. The real problem with Kenya is corruption not China. China has even built infrastructure that has beneffited citizens across the board unlike western countries that focus on aid that ended in the pockets of the ruling class and financed dictators🇰🇪

    I'm a little late to comment on this topic presented by Johnny. The fact remains is that since their colonial master left after years and years of exploiting these African countries, they left behind civil wars and corrupted war lords. The colonial masters, of serious racism mindset thought the black people are just low life no better than the slavery time. So the masters had never built much decent roads, schools, hospitals, power lines, tap water system, sewage system, let alone industrial developments. Then comes the Chinese who just want to do business on mutual benefit basis based on contract terms and conditions. Unlike the colonial masters holding a gun pointing at the black guy's head, the Chinese are much civilized to negotiate on equal basis. Just because the Chinese seems to be doing a good job over there helping each other for better live. Some jealous by-standers are picking things like some kind of expert? The Chinese were in Africa 500 years ago during Ming dynasty, in case you don't know Jack.

      P.S. i originally wanted to use $60,000 AUD as an easy in your head comparison, knowing it was slightly low, and $30,000 USD thinking it would be extremely low, then i checked and the australian salary is actually $90,000 and the us salary was pretty much correct. americans are just poor lol. also the exchange rate i used was slightly off because i was using pre covid numbers. its actually $6 AUD to $4.6 USD. i dont think things are 2.2x as expensive in australia as america (they are more expensive, just not 2.2x) so the buying power in australia is higher than america, irrespective of the value of the currency. that means an australian travelling to america with his AUD will be able to buy a lot more than an american travelling to australia with their USD.

Russia has always run circles around the US when it comes to espionage, but we will see if that’s still true in 50 years when espionage campaigns get declassified. China knows that these countries won't be able to pay off the debt so they make another agreement to lease the project off of the African country for 99 years. Basically taking over a section of the country for the price of the debt.
      This happened in Sri Lanka with a deep water harbor. They took a loan from China to build it, they couldn't pay it back, China took over the harbour and now it only employs Chinese workers and is used as a Chinese naval base.

If China really want to develop the Africa for the better world then they would have emphasize more on education and health infrastructure then railways and ports. I know ports and railways helps to boost the economy but before that there should be the products to be sold which most of the countries don't have the capacity to manufacture .The infrastructures build by the Chinese firms do so much environmental damage to the wildlife. I do agree some of the project by China have been great for some nations but look at the majority. China gives the load cuz they know the poor nation can't return it and they capture the land for decades and military bases there. I have been to Africa few years back and have seen some projects of China, Some were helping locals but most where there for no use. China claims to help those nations by building many infrastructure but most of them are rarely used. China had also leased Hambantota port for 99 years due to not being able to pay debts back. Its called Transfer of knowledge. China employing African workers to build all these massive infrastructure projects also helps the Africans who were employed to do these projects do it on their own as well. Many other nations have done this, and its no different this time.

      When USA and west European countries come to my country Serbia in 1999 they come to bomb, destroy and killing many people. Now China come and build bridges, tunnels, roads which helping us to improve our economy. Yes, we have dept to China, but if we and African countries have money to pay that immediately, of course we would pay. Nobody force those countries to invite China to build those roads and trains. Our governments invite China to help us.
