Man it works on same principle as of real battery. You need two different metals exception graphite is non metal. And an electrolyte. It can be salt water, lime water or or any acid which is in fruits. Ions from this acid generate electricity. In dry cell Zinc and graphite are electrodes while in lithium ion lithium and carbon are electrodes

I guess connect a solar panel of a higher voltage with a diode to prevent backcurrent if it's cloudy. If the panel is not of a higher voltage than the battery it won't charge. You could put several panels in line to get a higher voltage.
