Watching your videos has introduced me to so many great landscape artists. These steps are very helpful. Thank you for breaking down this part of making a painting and for all of your advice!
Really helpful for planning a painting. It is hard for me to alter a photo reference but your examples and explanation really clarified the of importance of it.
My initial impression of the canoe pond reference photo is to remove the tree overlapping the canoe and remove the small boat in front of the boat dock. The focal area would be at the end of the boat dock (most of the lines seem to direct my eyes that way). I'd lighten up the end of the boat dock to create more contrast and/or add some brightly lit color. Do think this composition would work?

thanks Phil. And your painting at the end is beautiful.
You are very welcome
This was really helpful. I usually blunder into a painting without considering the best option so thanks for the advice.

Wow, we have a lot of overlapping subscriptions, haha :)
Yes I think that would work.
Where do you find the John Carlson paintings for reference?
I googled his name, you have to add artist at the end, otherwise you get a hockey player
