  • Push the color to do what you want it to do. Do you want more depth? Do you want to show more light? Make it say what you want it to say.

I appreciate your candor in your videos and I feel like I’m still an artist even though I work 45+ hours a week. I see so many art videos that focus a ton on business, and views, but my favorite videos are yours because you maintain a focus on the craft itself. I love that I can come away from each one and I’ve learned something new to explore in painting! I love your channel!

Nicely expressed, my sentiments too! Phil is certainly a "diamond" among a pile of "coal" regarding so many vids on art on YT today!! : )

This was a fantastic way to present your approach to making thoughtful choices. Flipping between your reference and finished painting reveals your approach to value, temperature, and composition - everything to consider. This time around, you flipped a switch for me... I finally understand how to eliminate the unnecessary and focus. You say it all the time, "big shapes and values"... but awe, today it sunk in. Yeah, real good stuff

Nice Phil. Loved the smaller paintings, they be looking like plein air, even if done in studio, that's my goals lately, alla prima of course, and small, 6x8 and 8x10. Did a 9x12 the other day, it felt like a dog gone "mural" to me!! LOL.
Oh yes, the critters, they make the outdoor painting experience "interesting". Bears in the Tahoe area, where I used to live and paint, are blacks, not grizzlies, but they do like to sniff around sometimes. Oddly, my biggest concerns seemed to be that they would poison themselves if they ate my cadmiums off my palette, which I backed away from, letting them amble on their way, after a bit of "investigation" of my stuff!! What a "softy" I am/was eh? LOL :D

I have a lot of animal stories too, cows horses and burros licking my palette clean
