    Excellent video as usual Bill. I use a vacuum frame for my alt printing and as a light source I now use UV floodlights. I have two, a 100watt 365nm and a 395nm 50 watt lamp. They are cheap ($40 - $80) very consistent and COOL to operate. I much prefer the point source light they give rather than the black light tubes (which I ditched some time ago). The 50 watt gives me a 6 minute exposure time the 100 watt 3 minutes for PT/PD printing.

      @@BillSchwab Bill, if you use these floods to expose original camera negs, (like 10x8) you can dodge and burn the traditional B&W printing way during the exposures. Wear safety glasses though! I don’t like ultra short exposures personally so these are ideal for my way of working. Gum exposures are about two minutes with the 50 watt lamp.

    Interesting, thank you Bill.
    The first thing that comes to mind is that using this flashlight handheld would allow completely flexible control by "painting" with the light over an image. Burning and dodging simplified, although possibly at the expense of getting even exposure if that's what is wanted. Maybe some mix of tripod mounted stability and handheld spot treating?
    I've been experimenting with salt prints, having fun but so far this year I'm still waiting for consistent non-rainy weather in the Northwest. This looks like a great option until I can build a UV light box!

    Thank you for introducing all of us to this UV light source alternative for alternative photography. For some of your viewers, this available alternative to test alternative processes.

    Amazingly convenient for travel with medium format or small sheet film. Amazon has one called the uvBeast V2 that puts out a flood pattern that might work for 4x5....It states it has a 50 ft. range and it's $39.90. Finished PtPd prints before you get home!

    That's great! LEDs are pretty amazing, and are changing everything. You are inspiring me to get one, and to build a new exposure unit!

    Thanks so much for your video. I've wanted to do alternate photography, starting with cyanotype. But I don't have access to a sunny yard and the UV light sources are sooo expensive. Now, I'm gonna get a UV flashlight and get started.

    That’s totally awesome! I have a UV flashlight for finding bugs at night but hadn’t thought about using it for photo exposures. I saw a mention of light painting with it in a comment below, and I think there might be some interesting artistic explorations with it. Thank you!

    Watch out for exposure timing as the batteries run down.

      Good catch! I should’ve mentioned that. Batteries seem to last an awful long time though and there’s only two double A’s in here.

    It is a fantastic idea to use UV Flash light for the exposure. There is an idea, I think with UV Flashlight we can do some burning to expose the highlights.

    Awesome! I’ve tried and failed at building a working exposure box. This could be fun to try before I attempt another box. Question, I got a platinum, palladium kit that I’ve had about a year and a half now do the solutions for that expire?

    • @BillSchwab
      @BillSchwab  Рік тому +1

      Hey there, Captain! It’s a great way to try it out! As for your palladium solutions, the kit will still be good most likely. The one thing that can go bad is the Ferric Oxalate. It sometimes can go in six months or so, if not stored correctly. Give it a try and it still should work. If the images seem weak or anemic, it might need to be replaced. No worries as it’s very inexpensive. In comparison to the palladium. You can just order a replacement bottle from Bostick and Sullivan. Good luck!
