I would be very interested to hear you talk about how your experience with the Atari 400 was back in the day. My first computer was a Sinclair ZX Spectrum back then, but I really crave hearing about other peoples experiences with other systems nowadays. In germany it was mostly the C64, the Schneider 464 (german version of the Amstrad). Although I'm sure there must have been the odd Oric, BBC or TI 994A here too, but I personally never knew anyone who owned one of those, neither did I know anyone with an Atari XL or the likes....until later when I bought myself an Atari 1040STf.
So what I would like to know in case you may consider to make a video about you and your Atari 400 are what you (mostly) used it for (music, programming, gaming), which games were great on the 400 or maybe even better than other versions than its competitors. How was the hardware different or maybe even superior to its competitors....things like that.
I really would appreciate your opions on the topic.
Did you happen to notice the closed box looks like an Atari computer software cartridge?
good catch!
That the presentation box looks like an early Atari 8-bit cart is a nice touch.
It's not a backdrop. It's the kind of wallpaper we used to have in our kitchens :D
That's what I meant LOL. 70s wallpaper, as a backdrop for the box.
My uncly and aunt had THIS EXACT wallpaper in their living room in the 70ies and early eighties 🙂
I really liked the ideo of the packaging!
Atari had codenames for the 8-bit line - Candy and Colleen ;) Where both were named after Atari secretaries. Candy was the "low end" 400 model while Colleen was 800 "high end" model.
Super, thank you for this unboxing, gretings from Poland, I can't wait to get my copy of the device😁
And it was all orange... looking forward to getting mine, I never had an Atari 400 when I was younger.
Perifractic you have blown us out of the water with your generosity and bringing happiness to us from our childhood.
Thank you for your kind words! Means a lot 👍🕹
Too bad they didn't make the cartridge cover on top openable and put a usb port in there for the usb stick.
Working on it!
Lovin’ the Wii Homebrew Channel theme remix. :)
When I initially saw the thumbnail on my phone, I thought it was a picture of a Sinclair ZX80! Though that was a historically significant home computer, I'm glad your video was actually about the Atari 400 in THE400 guise 👍
My best friend had one of these back in the mid to late 80's, I was round his house pretty much every day for two weeks ;) Tank commander was my favourite.
As you're lifting the lid I couldn't stop myself thinking "Oi! Do mind the keyboard membrane."
D'Oh!
Ha!
awesome stuff looking forward to more
This looks so good. Love that they matched the serial numbers. Can't wait to see your playtest mate. Also I've entered the raffle :)
I just wanna point out that i love your videos, keep them coming.
In Germany they start shipping it on Thursday, can't wait to try it out. Thanks for the unboxing video, as always a great video! 👍👍
Cool box. And with very cool content in it! Anyways, whoever wins the raffles, congratulations, especially to you, Perifractic, who made this great decision.
That is one bit of cool retro kit can not wait to see what it's like to play on. As alway amazing little video and looking forward to the next one so until then have a great week and take care.
You too!
What a nice surprise - it's Saturday already! EAT THIS, _THIESI'S BOSS!!!_
A Brill Review As Always👍.
Somebody gives him a new toy and the first thing he does is to pull it apart... a true nerd, but in a good way!
For some reason I've been doing that since I was about 10, not sure why ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I'd guess it's a case of I don't want to see it working, I want to see HOW it works? Just a thought.
They nailed it with the inside decoration of the box. The curtains of my room looked very similar when I was a young boy.
You tempt me to get this model too, Perri.
My first comps were a Tandy MC-10 then a CoCo 2 and 3. Sadly I don’t see anyone making mini’s of these any time soon!
Nice !!
A left handed joystick would be nice, or change the layout in settings, just a idea.
I want a "Maxi" edition with full keyboard.
Preferably an 800, because the 400 keyboard made the ZX81 feel good!
@@jon-paulfilkins7820 You are wrong, nothing made the ZX81 keyboard feel good LOL, I spent many an hour trying to create my own mechanical keyboard for that thing until I got an 800 and never looked back.
You could do a The400 Maxi with a B-Key keyboard 🤔
my first computer was an Atari 800XL, and i still have it. :D
Pretty good giving us the CPU info. True nerd.
First of all congrats for a beautiful show by your channel. Great work. Can it play invitation to programming from cassete files with audio at the same time? or conversational german, french, spanish also with audio? can you check if it can happen?
Atari's internal code name for the 400 was Candy
2:21 And so I told her...
5:01 And she said...
5:54 So I said...
My first computer was the Atari 800.
hopefully mine is in the post !
Beautiful I'm happy when we all get the A400 Mini and thanks Great video and good posts as always "p.s." But never mind, we'll get the A400 Mini soon.😁
Hi, does anyone make a replacement casing for the SNES console do you know ? 👍🏻
The 400 & 800 did have codenames! "Candy" and "Colleen"!
Beige computers were so cool
I hope the 8-bit Atari catches on. I have always felt that these computers did not receive as much love as their worthy cousins the C64. I still have all of my original software disks and a handful of game manuals (mostly Microprose because the manuals were so well done. I guess I would donate them before ever throwing them away.) It felt empowering to be taking Western Civ in college but also being able to use Crusade in Europe to consider say the Battle of the Bulge or the like more carefully. In some sense, I think I was a bit spoiled in that I feel like perhaps I am wasting time with any games where I am not learning anything. Anyway, so happy about this video. Best wishes. PS I never played Star Raiders, but it looks very similar to a 2600 classic Star Master by Activision which was my personal favorite of that system. PSS Make the 800 or the 130 XE.
Was that a spare socket on the main PCB?
What's that in the corner? RBXY and a code? Mmmh is that the easter egg?
That's the best box I've seen for any retro mini console I've seen so far. Just gotta love that wallpaper. I believe my parents had a 1,50 meter lamp with with almost exactly the same pattern on the lamp shade, but it was purple instead of orange.
I wish I had an original Atari 400.
How can I get one are just only for you tell me please
Cool, But.. They totally missed the opportunity to have an SD card go into the Cartridge spot :(
True, but it makes the PCB cheaper and simpler to have the port on the back. I imagine some creative user will figure out a way to do the cartridge port as you say, similar to how at least one person made the keys functional on the Amiga Mini (or maybe it was the C64 Mini).
But is it a funBoxing unboxing?
Edit
9:10 HOLD UP! PCBWAAAAAAY!! Has the WeeCee project that LGR reviewed? Oh man if I could get the board for it I'd gladly learn to soder to build one... Assuming I could find the industrial 486 board and the rest of the components.
Weren''t the 400 and 800 called Candy and Colleen respectively?
Put your hand.. in the box!
The Atari VCS/2600 was Stella, what do you mean Atari prototypes didn't have names? They all had names
Now we just need a mini ZX spectrum!
But a real one is already kinda small!
Name a Spectrum model or derivative clone and I'm sure I've got it in my collection 😁
I'm still waiting for the Nintendo 64 Mini but sadly still no sign 😢
Virtual Retro Machines... :)
Its good to see these old computers reborn people actually miss programing like they use to in the 80s you just cant get a i7 laptop and draw a circle with a couple of lines of basic
The story behind Bruce Lee is pretty interesting. His estate completely shut down a Kickstarter project once.
Didn't you use Attack of the Mutant Camels as a substitute for The Empire Strikes Back?
When is the 400 mini giveaway?
4x joysticks. X in the future we play with ourselves
🤘🤘
Just saying: Instead of the word 'spanner' you could have used 'tool'? The PCB could have been 'Player Can't Break-it' (the joystick)? Also: Those aren't weights, they are xylophone blocks (keys?). Hence why they are aligned in the way they are - so they make a different sound when struck by the hammer (er, spanner?). Just some thoughts on this one. (Just kidding as always though, LOL!).
I think 🤔 they missed their chance by not having the USB on top under the old cartridge port.
I'm jealous that I probably won't get the shirt and mug with my pre-order 🙄🤦🏻♀️
When is the review embargo up on this? Can’t help but notice that John Riggs has just posted a review 🤷🏻♂️
No don’t raffle them, that’s too personal to let go. “ Going to need a bigger house” 😂.
Ok I just spent £5 on a raffle for a Model 3 Kittesla 😂, I’m sure I read it right that it was open world wide so fingers crossed coming to Scotland. 😂 I must emit I’d drive the Frack out of that all over the U.K. It also said I’m sure if you ever visit California you get to visit and play that Sit in Star Wars arcade game I grew up with. 👍
How. Much. RAM!!!???
And as we all know USB-C stands for "Ultimate Snazzy Beige - Cable", doesn't it?
Can I say just how disappointed that the cartridge door doesn't open to reveal the USB port for the thumb drive? Such a missed opportunity. 💜
Otherwise, it looks fantastic!
Working on a fix here!
@@RetroRecipes Oh, that’s exciting! I can’t wait to see how you fix it. 💜
@@RetroRecipesLooking forward to seeing it!
I think myself I would have cut the top with a "razor saw" (serrated razor blade). Then built the insides from plastic, covered with aluminium tape that I had dulled with some fine steel wool.
Man, my model-building fingers are itching ...
Atari, The number one video game........
I'm really getting annoyed that Atari is being so secretive about the 25 games included. They announced some but not all of them. Why? By this point they must have made their decisions and got the licensing issues resolved.
Third comment. Because PCB stands for "3rd comment"
I appreciate these videos but I suspect you are using an audio compressor that could use adjustment. At times, the breathing is loud, sharp and difficult to listen to.
Thank you for the feedback
THEA400 Mini uses THEC64 main board in it... hahaha THEA400 Mini use the same Carousel Manhattan too from THEA500, it a shame they didn't work on a better theme, it looks to much like THEA500 Mini's Carousel but I guess its like Android where that looks the same on every phone but this is not a phone, thats its only draw back with me, it looks like THEA500 to much, I don't like how ATGames consoles all look the same too and use the same menu.
At 10:30 you are pointing to its USB Ports that are used on THEC64 keyboard and its 3 port hub and the Capcom Home Arcade Joysticks are connected too, and yes that uses the same board too so 3 devices now use the same board, they can be turned into any Virtual Retro Machine... :) you got to love the Mobile Phone and Tablets... :)
Oh did you know: That you can put THEC64 board in THEC64 Mini Case, I have mine in a THEC64 Mini case because it was too big on my desk.
yipee...
Now we know what kind of patterned wallpaper is going to be hung in BabyFractic's nursery. Lucky kid.
Would buy if it were slightly larger with a working KB. As it is, it's.. a shell. A PERFECT shell, but just a shell. To play the greats (Star Raiders, Defender) YOU NEED A KEYBOARD. And plugging in one seems like a waste-of-space-cheat. Might as well move up to a mister and have 20 or something systems instead.
I remember Perifractic talking about this in the prototype video. The buttons on the joystick provide the keys necessary for those classic games.
right, but defender expects "spacebar" for hyperspace and K or something for hyperspace. Star Raiders takes.. 7? Keys on the KB? So everytime you want to play you have to remap controls? @@gregholloway2656
I wish all this merch was the reason the price was hiked by 20% when it came to paying the rest of the reserve, but I suspect it isn't...
Depending on your jurisdiction, a raffle where only 10% of collected funds go to charity may be illegal.
Isn't the raffle for the car though, so that's the incentive/prize? It's not as though the raffle is to raise money for the hospital and then only give them 10% of the proceeds. The donation is just a nice gesture from R.R.?
@@tarquinjones2002 It is a nice gesture, it is just that raffles are against the law in many US States, although some states make exceptions for charities. This is why most drawings or raffle like contests by commercial enterprises allow for free entries. This is to avoid anti-gambling laws that include raffles.
The Raffall company is in the UK and is licensed to run raffles. I’m sure their lawyers know what they’re doing but it wouldn’t be easy with all the different international gambling laws.
@@Wormetti I would be more worried about UA-cam, a creator I watched quite regularly went through a period of several days of demonetization after promoting a drawing. Of course it is always hard to predict what YT does.
@@networkg Rest assured our team of lawyers (or was it Puppyfractic) carefully checked all was above board as far as UA-cam and territorial rules and laws go. Raffle is run completely in my home country of the UK. Thanks for your concern, we've got this 👍
why you put so much bass in your voice.i am listening over 2 monoblocks and your videos always shocks me out of my chair.
I'm disappointed that the cartridge port does not open. I would otherwise fidget with that all day ..
