How to Increase the Flex in RC Crawlers?

  • A math model is being derived that can describe and predict the vertical articulation (flex) generated by the RC crawler shocks. The model is validated on three RC crawlers and hints are given how to increase the articulation of RC crawlers.
    Correction:
    The term "wheelbase" was used in the wrong way. The wheelbase refers only to the distance of wheel axes in the longitudinal direction (front-back). Here "wheelbase" must be replaced by "track width".
    The three RC crawlers used in this movie are:
    1. MST CFX-W J45 Kit
    2. Traxxas TRX-4 Defender, with upgrades. For more see: • Aesthetic Upgrades TRX...
    3. Jeep, Chassis CNC Aluminum Metal Carbon Frame Body for 1/10 Crawler AXIAL SCX10, 313mm Wheelbase (Banggood), Jeep Wrangler car body shell for 1/10 RC Crawler AXIAL SCX-10, 313 mm wheelbase (Banggood).

    Wheelbase is the horizontal distance between the centers of the front and rear wheel, I think you mean track width when talking about how wide the stance is. Other than that nice video man

    Flex isn’t always the answer. More flex means more instability and greater chance or roll over on side hills.

    • @rcscientific6004
      @rcscientific6004  3 роки тому

      Yes and no! Flex increases instability if it is enhanced by increased spring suspension travel (especially when the spring stiffness and damping viscosity are low). However, if you enhance flex by increasing the lateral wheelbase, it does not affect instability. On the other hand, increased wheelbase worsens maneuverability.

      @@rcscientific6004 have a look at the new generation of comp crawlers. You will find that they run close to full droop suspension setups and not a lot of flex. It makes them more predictable and easier to drive.

      This is a larger one from a different brand, which works worse: www.aliexpress.com/item/4000033563674.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.27424c4dXsFpsO

    Spurweite erhöhen lässt einen aber eher Aufsetzen am Diff bzw Lenkhebel vorne. Und es erhöht die Lenkkräfte die nötig sind um das Rad zu drehen. Das könntest du gerne nochmal beschreiben. Das Rad steht ja dann weiter aussen, als der Mittelpunkt um den es sich eindreht.

    • @rcscientific6004

      Ja, das stimmt. Letztendlich muss man für alle Einstellungen einen Kompromiss finden. Hängt auch von Pistenart und Modellart ab.

    Really good analysis, but enlarging axle create problems in narrow obstacles, so is not the best choice in my opinion.
    I think it would be better to work around shocks, better springs calibration and more extension as possible.

    I think your putting way more thinking into this. It's about the trial and error. That's the hobby. Not knowing how something will react is the fun. We don't want cookie cutter formula. That's just not a real crawler enthusiast.

      Your missing the point of the hobby. This is radio control. I don't need a flux capacitor to build a time machine. I simply put and older body on it. Your takin the hobby and my comment way to serious. It's all about the fun. If math is fun for you......then by all means have at it. Me, I'm just going to keep drivin without a calculator

    • @T00DEEPBLUE
      @T00DEEPBLUE 3 роки тому +5

      Approaching the problem with maths is by far the most objective, accurate and efficient way to resolve it. It's the bread and butter of what actual engineers do in real life and those same principles apply to radio controlled vehicles too. If you don't care about the engineering that goes into how these cars work, more power to you. But gatekeeping who is and isn't a "real crawler enthusiast" based on who approaches the problem objectively vs. those who don't is beyond asinine.
