The grim adventures if Billy and Mandy, did the jack story pretty well. Biggest differences where jack was a prankster not a drunk it was the grim reaper he tricks not the devil and after grim gives him eternal life he chops jacks head off forcing him to use a pumpkin as a replacement. That show could get surprisingly dark at times

3:00 One crucifix is like a pepper spray for all kinds of minor evils. Of course he had one.
And you _would_ buy "all the crucifixes" if the devil is destined to meet you today.
9:14 The Boogeyman is basically a mytho-story-logical archetype, more then a specific character.

In the show 'The Grim Adventure of Billy and Mandy' Jack O'Lantern was the town prankster and everyone got so tired of his pranks that they framed him for a prank on the queen and got his head chopped off. When the Grim Reaper showed up Jack stole his scythe. He made a deal with the Grim Reaper to give it back if he gave him eternal life so that he could play his tricks for all eternity. The Grim Reaper agreed to the deal but after getting his scythe back he cut off Jack's head and replaced it with a pumpkin.

I think when most people mistake Samhain as the name of an entity they’re actually thinking of The Horned God, a Pagan deity associated Wicca culture. Although not inherently tied to Halloween or even the autumn season in general since The Horned God is actually more associated with the winter time, he has a lot of Halloween-y vibes, being a major figure in Wicca and witch culture, having been worshipped by the same people that celebrated Samhain and being the inspiration for modern day depictions of the Devil being a horned man. Samhain is also said to be the time of year when The Horned God’s gf, The Horned Goddess died and was resurrected as the Goddess of Yule when the harvest season ended and winter came around.

I believe the reason that some people say that Jack wears the lantern on his head was a conflation of his story and the Headless Horseman's. I have seen it in a few popular media, including the show Sleepy Hollow and Scooby Doo

  • @OptimusPhillip

I would very much like to see a video about the whole Samhain thing. Or about the broader relationship between pagan and Christian holidays. A lot of people seem to miss the nuance there, and assume that holidays like Halloween and Christmas were just pagan holidays rebranded, when the reality is more complicated than that.
Anyway, I prefer Stingy Jack as a Halloween mascot. The Headless Horseman is a fascinating character, but I don't think anything about him uniquely speaks to Halloween. And I feel like there are just too many different Boogeymen out there for them to really work as a mascot.

I love The Headless Horseman. I grew up with the story from Disney and when I got older, the Tim Burton movie as well. But I really love about it is two things:
First, you can sort of see the horseman as a continuation of The Wild Hunt stories from Europe. There are so many stories of headless riders or ghost riders throw out Europe, such as The Headless Horseman of Brunswick, and almost always they have something to do with the wild hunt. Hell, Halloween is sometimes scene as a starting date for The Wild Hunt, so it make sense for a headless rider to riding on the day
Second, I love that this story doesn't give a concrete answer. It could be a ghostly rider, chasing Ichabod to get a new head, but it could also be the other major character of the story, Brom Bones in disguise. Honestly, why don't have more Halloween or horror stories in general that make you question and debate what the monster is?

5:31 I have a new head canon as to how jack ended up like this in these designs. After wandering the earth for many years carrying his lantern, he comes up with one final way to try and trick the devil. He carefully opens the pumpkin/turnip and swallows the ember, lighting his head on fire. He does this to try and make it seem like he was a burning soul that escaped hell, so the devil will chase him into hell and let him stay there, not being able to recognize his face. After being fooled twice the devil has finally caught on to Jack's tricks and decides to properly punish him. He grows a pumpkin/turnip around his jack's head and leaves the ember in his mouth to mock his attempt at entering hell. Now the devil can never mistake Jack for anyone else and Jack just has to wander around with a burning hot pumpkin/turnip encasing his face.

    • @panjinurfadillah2489
      @panjinurfadillah2489 4 місяці тому

That's sound like a relly good head canon, but the thing that bother me is jack swalows the ember because jack can't said it's to hot to hold so whats the difference to have in in his mouth, or maybe because jack is an undead and cant feel pain.

Dullahans are also prominent in modern Japanese pop culture. In a similar vein to how the Japanese view Yousei and fairies as similar beings, Dullahans are sometimes compared to Nukekubi, which are female yokai with floating heads and are related to Rokurokubi (one example of this is Sekibanki from Touhou Project, who's a Rokurokubi despite appearing to be a Nukekubi while Zun has used Dullahan as the English translation of her species name). Additionally, Japanese pop culture often depict Dullahans in fantasy works as headless knights with plate armour. This isn't how they're originally depicted in Irish and American folklore, but I think we can all agree that giving them plate armour objectively makes them look more badass.

About Jack using the pumpkin/turnip as his head, one have to remember that Jack is the same character in basically all Irish/British fables, fairy tales and nursery rhymes. So Stingy Jack, Jack & Jill, Jack be nimble, Jack Frost, Jack & the beanstalk, Little Jack Horner, etc. Have the same protagonist, and and most people know that Stingy Jack and Jack & Jill, are about the same dude, so Jack lost his head falling down the creek in "Jack & Jill" and then he replaced it with the pumpkin lantern.

It's a fun twist on the old tale and it provides for a lot of very morbid childish fun

When you think about it, is kinda weird that Halloween doesn't have any "Official Mascot" when other Hollydays like Easter have the Easterbunny and Christmast has Santa Claus, specially when there are so many characters that would be amazing mascots. Stinky Jack is really a missing oportunity for having an official mascot of Halloween, specially with Jack'o lanterns already being simbols of Halloween. At least movies gave us some amazing characters that could be perfect as mascots of hallowen like Jack Skellington and Sam from Trick'r Threat.

I saw something similar on a Facebook poll about which character best embodies the spirit of Halloween. The choices were Jack Skellington, Sam from Trick 'r Treat and Michael Myers. A lot of people picked Michael as he's specifically known for killing people on Halloween but I'd argue that's not quite good enough to make him the embodiment of Halloween. Granted, I like the Halloween movies (at least the old ones) but just killing people on Halloween doesn't really make you the personification of the holiday. However Jack and Sam are much better suited to that role with Sam being the best in my opinion. The reason for this is because while Michael and Sam both kill people on Halloween Sam only kills those who specifically disrespect the traditions of Halloween whereas Michael kills people regardless of whether or not they respect seasonal traditions.

I remembered that all 3 stories maybe true but all 3 things are make believe. But I remembered that the second thing was in the Disney channel movie Don't Look Under the Bed. That movie is on Disney plus.

I think I can help you with pumpkin on the head story it's probably because of the show grim adventures of Billy and Mandy Halloween episode where literally there's a character who has almost the same story but as death instead of the Devil
