I remember this TV show(and the wonderful music)from when I was a very young kid in England. I have watched it since and it's a good old bit of British Television!
Knew this by reputation - was aware of it in the 70s but didn't see it then. Bit of a spoiler, this clip, as it's from late in the series, but it intrigued me enough to watch the whole thing. It's a slow burn but worthwhile.
So you mean your father was Michael J. Bird, also the author of "The Aphrodite Inheritance "? Wow, what a father you had then! It's been more than 30 years since I first read the books of "Ferryman" and "Aphrodite" and saw the TV-series, and it still intrigues me.
Not directly related to "Lotus Eaters", no. WPTF was about a mad old Greek bag (Patience Collier) who is harbouring a grudge against Jack Hedley because he got her daughter pregnant at the end of WW2. So she makes attempts to have him killed. Some of the episode are "opt out" standalone things, with other plots and extra guest stars (e.g. Gareth Thomas, Jack Watson, Sally Knyvette etc.) Personally, I think some of Bird's other works ("Aphodite", "Dark Side..", "Maelstrom") are better.
I have never read or seen "The Lotus Eaters", but wasn't there a band with the same name? If I remember correctly, their greatest hit (at least here in Belgium) was "You Don't Need Someone New". Was their name derived from, or a tribute to, this book?
I have watched this series on TV in 1982 in Sri Lanka. Many of them were very interesting
I was a child when this series was aired on TV in Sri Lanka. The theme song is very familiar, but the intro clip I remember was different.

Is the Ferryman from this TV series Death himself? A reference to the river Styx of the Greek mythology, where Death carries the souls with a boat?
Not.
The ferryman is Kharon, not the Death. Kharon the underworld s ferryman.
