Totally with Barry on considering an induction hob unit for camping. Yes I camp with mains power! I took my air fryer this year and that was actually really awesome.
Those induction cooktops have been such a money saver for us. Ever a nce we got one our gas expense has become a third of what it used to be. Any long duration cooking stuff we do on induction, stews, curries, halwaa, making evaporated or condensed milk at home etc. Also pressure cooker stuff. Making rice or boiling potatoes etc takes less than ten mins on the highest setting of the induction in a pressure cooker.
It's all about the individual cooking style. As a single person with only electric, it still takes only 12 minutes for potatoes, 15-20 minutes for rice and even slow cooked beans or pot roast 2 hours max. Since I seldom make slow cooked meals, this device would not be useful for me.
I never get here this early! East vs West on cooking the same dish! Some dish are reproduced all around the world but done quite differently so would love to see the same dish being done 2 ways from different countries!

Set it for 23 minutes have a shower, and coming out to a hot meal for dinner and pack a bit to take to work at 7am..... I was barely human after 3 years of that. But the hob helped so much in keeping me human by making home cooking so easy. Did soups and sauces quite well too. It was a cheap thing and lasted the whole time i was in that shoebox flat.

This is actually that was I thinking when watching it haha I have a sage machine one at a higher level then this one, personally I thought it was great when I got it but after a year I’m not impressed and I do use a mokka pot now and again instead

That ninja blender is awesome... I got it as a present for my wife and it's always being used, soups and sauces are amazing in it, and took about 30-40 minutes to make some extremely nice jam... That thing is amazing as a multi tool blender
I would love to see the chefs really put the ninja to the test and see how it does in each function that it offers! Barry might be accidentally right in saying that the balloon shape helps to whisk air into whatever you're whipping. I read recently that whisk shape is actually a thing that matters, whether you want air or not in whatever you're whisking.
He is right. It's a balloon whisk, and it's used for when you want to whisk air into things, as opposed to other types of whisk : www.homestratosphere.com/types-of-whisks/
Not something for you to test, but the best but of kit I've ever got is my Kenwood Chef mixer. I have the blender, chopper, mini spice chopper, meat grinder/sausage filling/kibbeh maker and ice cream maker accessories. Beside it's versatility, the repairability is just grand. I've manage to break it twice, order the parts online and fix it myself both times. I use pretty much everyday and it feels like it'll last a lifetime. I love it.
I mean, it's not actually BS. It is called a balloon whisk because of the shape, and it IS used to whip large amounts of air into a product, hence why you use a balloon whisk for things like egg whites, heavy cream, etc as opposed to say, a french whisk or a roux whisk.
Oh wow. For the first time ever, none of the gadgets are actually something I would personally use/need. I don't drink smoothies, don't drink coffee. Don't think I need a portable induction (already have a gas one), and I just use a hand blender to whisk everything cause I'm lazy. Haha even so, I enjoyed this episode! And for once I've not ended up adding yet another gadget to my wishlist! Edit: I meant a electric whisk not a hand blender. Oops!
I got induction burners for the holidays. I extra burners to cook all the sides. Then I found out is great for canning because I had my entire stove top filled and still needed two more burners. I love mine.
When it comes to these types of machines, my rule of thumbs are the same with tools: 1: If you're going to be using it once in awhile, buy the cheap one. 2: If you're using enough that it breaks, buy a more expensive one to replace it.
I have a mokka pot for 10 years. Changed only because the handle melted. In that time my father had 4 espresso machines. When they brake the parts and fixis costs more than new machine. And it's still more than mokka.
The ninja blender has honestly changed my life in recent weeks! I highly recommend playing with the soup & sauce making functions as it’s cut my meal prep time down to 30 minute rather than 3 hours. +it has a self-cleaning option 😂
The old stovetop coffee maker lasts for years....i got mine when my friend got a fancy machine about 30 years ago and it's still going strong. If you want fluffy milk...use a baby bottle. Fill halfway, shake like mad and microwave
I own a Vitamix. It does what it does very well, but it's hopeless for small jobs. There are different whisks for different tasks, but expensive ones last longer than cheap ones, for the most part. It's not wrong to take an induction burner glamping -- it's not likely to start a forest fire. Don't take the expensive coffee makers, though.
Vitamix makes mini containers for small jobs nowadays! They’re annoyingly expensive, but they’ve been worth it for me. Get the most out of the expensive blender anyway.
I'd love to see more done with the Ninja. I've been curious about it before and now you've made me even more curious. For product comparisons: immersion blenders, rolling pin types and styles, knives For knives, it would be lovely to have a complete show dedicated to them with chef explanations on why different knife types and a normal trying different knives not only quality differences but also type differences to really show what the chef is saying about them.
They already did knives in a previous video. But yeah, another "Chefs test" of the Ninja where they throw everything at it that they can come up with (like they did with the G3Ferrari and the infrared oven) would be really cool.
Honestly for the kind of money you spent on the Sage, you could have gotten a super automatic espresso machine. If you really wanted to show an improvement in technology that is the way to go. It grinds my beans, brews the coffee, and puts the puck in its own bin. I get that for foodies automating the process sounds like something that they wouldn't be into but when you tried for years to make a good cup of espresso this thing changed my life. I got a Saeco xsmall.
One kitchen equipment upgrade that made a huge difference for me was my microplane grater. I used to have a cheap one and it took ages to zest anything (I used to groan when I saw it on a recipe because I knew zesting a lemon would add about 20 minutes to thr recipe). I thought my lemons were "too old" and the skin had gotten too soft. Early in lockdown I tried a (sorted!) recipe that called for zesting 3 lemons and actually pulled a muscle in my shoulder. It took that to make me go "maybe it's the microplane itself". I got a more expensive one and now zesting any citrus is unbelievably fast and easy. Made a huge difference!
The difference between a good blender and not is whether they can blend up nuts (like cashews) I had a cheap one, but I was making vegan mac'n'cheese so much that I bought an expensive one so that the cashew sauces was smooth. Worth the extra dough for sure.
@@gabrielelipinskaite Sorry I wasn't clear. I have a super cheap Breville blender that I use for smoothies (the one that is a rip off of nutribullet) , and I bought a food processor that I use for nuts, soups, guac, pesto etc. The food processor I bought from Tesco for about 80 quid.
My parents recently re-did their kitchen and got an induction hob (4-burner). It's brilliant! It heats the pans up super quick and you have so much control over the heat levels. The super fast setting boils a pan of water in about 30 seconds (I found that out the hard way). And what's best is that if a pan boils over of splatters on the hob top, because the surface isn't hot the liquid doesn't burn on or get boiled a second time around (like my old electric hob used to do, harumph). As you say the only issue is with lifting the pan to stir of sauté, etc - there's no heat once you take it off the hob, but it soon catches up once you replace the pan. It's not so bad with the wok but you don't get the heat up the side as with a gas hob, so it falls down a bit there. But my parents aren't gourmet chefs so they don't really notice a difference. All in all I'm pretty impressed with their induction hob :)
The coffee shots for the 2 espresso machines were definitely under-dosed, not tamped firm enough and had too much water on the extraction. You can really tell on the silver machine how the shot runs like water instead of something more viscous that its under-extracted. Needs to be more resistance in the coffee grinds as it 'filters' the water as to extract more of the solubles and slow the speed at which the water comes out hence creating more pressure. You can do this by putting more coffee grinds into the portafilter, tamping down the coffee grinds firmer, or adjusting the coarseness of the ground coffee (I assume they used pre-ground so this one was out of their control.) Not surprised the first one tastes more 'coffee' like given how watery the extractions of those 2 machines was. They also have functions to reduce how much water is dosed out on a single or double shot. Those look like they were doing 120mls on the double shot setting, should be around 30ml for single and 60ml for double. Add hot water after if you want to top it off, using extra water during the extraction increases the time the grind is exposed to heat and starts potentially burning the coffee (tainting the rest of your shot) or extracting the undesirables husks of a shot resulting in the coffee being more bitter. In this case the extra water didn't meet much resistance and just passed through the grinds without extracting much flavour (sugars, acid) and is much like water thats had a tea bag taken out of it after 30 seconds, jus flavoured water.
Yeap. Wishing they do this. Currently, the sorted crew should just stick with the Moka. To make great espresso, you need both a good machine and a grinder.
I bought an InstaPot blender on sale (it has all the same capabilities as the Ninja one), and haven’t regretted it at all. Sure,it takes up more space, but it does SO MUCH! Making butternut squash soup is a breeze.
Watching those espresso pour as a barista of 5 yrs and internally screaming 🙈 maybe editing, but they looked fassssst. I'd imagine they've maybe had a general grind for all three. Which if they've used filter coffee is probably quite coarse for the swan/sage which makes it harder for the machine to gain pressure. So you get a fast pour and a weak coffee 🙃
I don't own one but I've gotten to use one on several occasions and the ninja is the only blender I've ever used that can completely blend frozen strawberries. It is an amazing machine.

Takes a little longer to make on the moka and gives a different result (especially if you're into crema and want the milk frothing options for lattes and other milky coffees) but yeah, I personally use a French Press or Moka, both from IKEA, every day. Cheap and low maintenance. Does the job. And if I want a special coffee I go to the coffee shop. I've often considered investing in a good coffee machine but i'd still go to the coffee shop just because it gives me a reason to go outside and I like to hang out there.

Rice in a pressure cooker? Uncle Roger would go nuts if he heard that.
I can't do induction I need gas. Gas = high precision
@@Tomazack it's faster. :P 10 mins and same results as a rice cooker.
It's all about the individual cooking style. As a single person with only electric, it still takes only 12 minutes for potatoes, 15-20 minutes for rice and even slow cooked beans or pot roast 2 hours max. Since I seldom make slow cooked meals, this device would not be useful for me.
What's the advantage of making evaporated milk yourself?
As a Chef I love this content, from reviews of equipment, and gear, all the way to new food pairings. Thank you!

I loved my induction hob in Hong Kong. Coming back from work at 2am, fill a pot with rice, water, meat and some veg.
Wow, that sounds like it was a hellish work week for you. Bravo on actually managing to fit cooking into that too!

I've had a small Bialetti coffee pot for over 10 years and it's hands down the tastiest value for money coffee you can make at home 👌🏻
I'm just about to move into my first house as a homeowner, and the previous tenants are taking their oven with them so i was considering an induction hob/hotplate whilst we collect a bit of money together to get a proper oven and wait for it to be delivered. The 40 quid one from IKEA would be perfect for this! And because its quite small and thin i would probably keep it after the oven came, just in case i needed an extra hob at christmas or whatever
I got a Ninja Pro Blender on sale for 50 bucks and I think it's the perfect in between for the blenders. It's normally 75 though, so maybe wait until Black Friday. It does an amazing job for smoothies.

@@dedjderaladin298 Barry is right...that doesn't sound right, even though it is right.
I love it.
It's bad that I believed Barry's BS about the whisk
😂 we will let you off.
I did too...
Barry was pulling a Ben with that BS
I mean, it's not actually BS. It is called a balloon whisk because of the shape, and it IS used to whip large amounts of air into a product, hence why you use a balloon whisk for things like egg whites, heavy cream, etc as opposed to say, a french whisk or a roux whisk.
@@brandoneagan7520 So, not so much BS as he just happened to infer correctly?
I have a high powered blender and I love it. I use it at least once a week and it's been going strong for 5 years. Worth it in my opinion.
Oops!
Do u mean an electric whisk or do you actually mean a hand blender? Just out of interest
@@janani1826 Oh lol you're right! I meant an electric whisk XD thanks for pointing that out I hadn't even noticed!

I use my Kitchen-Aid mixer with the whisk attachment to whisk egg whites or whipped cream.
I would love that induction burner. Our building doesn't have gas service, and boiling water on a glass-top cooktop takes forever.
I got induction burners for the holidays. I extra burners to cook all the sides. Then I found out is great for canning because I had my entire stove top filled and still needed two more burners. I love mine.
When it comes to these types of machines, my rule of thumbs are the same with tools:
1: If you're going to be using it once in awhile, buy the cheap one.
2: If you're using enough that it breaks, buy a more expensive one to replace it.
I have a mokka pot for 10 years. Changed only because the handle melted. In that time my father had 4 espresso machines. When they brake the parts and fixis costs more than new machine. And it's still more than mokka.
James’ air whisking made me blush
The Sage brand of gadgets seems to be similar in price and functions to Breville gadgets.
Sometimes the old ways are the best ways.
"blender for 2020" does Jamie mean it's gonna kill us all?
Im trying to fill out my kitchen and these videos are really helping me. Please more Chefs recommend videos!
For product comparisons: immersion blenders, rolling pin types and styles, knives
For knives, it would be lovely to have a complete show dedicated to them with chef explanations on why different knife types and a normal trying different knives not only quality differences but also type differences to really show what the chef is saying about them.
The difference between a good blender and not is whether they can blend up nuts (like cashews)
I had a cheap one, but I was making vegan mac'n'cheese so much that I bought an expensive one so that the cashew sauces was smooth.
Worth the extra dough for sure.
What blender did you buy? I am looking for one that could make nut butters and just overall smooth souces, blend vegetable soups and so on
@@gabrielelipinskaite Sorry I wasn't clear.
16:20 i usually make coffee with just normal pot :D it tastes so much better than coffee from those weird machines :D

Yeap. Wishing they do this.
Currently, the sorted crew should just stick with the Moka. To make great espresso, you need both a good machine and a grinder.

it made me sad seeing james adding cold water in the moka pot

Watching those espresso pour as a barista of 5 yrs and internally screaming 🙈 maybe editing, but they looked fassssst. I'd imagine they've maybe had a general grind for all three. Which if they've used filter coffee is probably quite coarse for the swan/sage which makes it harder for the machine to gain pressure. So you get a fast pour and a weak coffee 🙃
Yeah, we're by no means baristas, as you can probably tell!

It is reasonable compared to the highest end prices. Espresso machines can get even pricier.
The reason for the "Guinness crema" is cos the basket is pressurised on the swan. The funny thing is, the sage is an entry level espresso machine. This also forgetting about the grinder (which if you want to get the best out of your machine you're gonna need) too which to get a decent one you're looking at £3/500 quid.

Very nice video. Love the interactions between you guys. So glad to have your advice for the blender. Have a good day
My moka pot was $6. It's hard to justify buying a "true" espresso machine when such an affordable almost-as-good alternative exists.
Try rokpresso and flairespresso
An Aeropress beats any Moka pot and the vast majority of espresso machines for £30. I will shout this from the rooftops until the day I die of a caffeine overdose.
We've got that Sage coffee machine at home, only paid £199 for it last year and my wife adores it. Great bit of kit, just keep an eye out for deals

Why choose a ‘soup maker’ for the high end blender option? A Vitamix seems the obvious choice for an expensive, quality high end blender.
... Vitamix is a lot more than 149 pounds aka $193 USD. Not everyone needs a Vitamix. Not everyone even needs the Ninja blender.

The only problem with the ninja blender is the power requirements might start popping breakers if you aren't careful or your kitchen is wired for modern equipment.
The ninja has a 1.7kW motor, the average kettle is 3kW. I don't think popping a breaker is going to be an issue
