One kitchen equipment upgrade that made a huge difference for me was my microplane grater. I used to have a cheap one and it took ages to zest anything (I used to groan when I saw it on a recipe because I knew zesting a lemon would add about 20 minutes to thr recipe). I thought my lemons were "too old" and the skin had gotten too soft. Early in lockdown I tried a (sorted!) recipe that called for zesting 3 lemons and actually pulled a muscle in my shoulder. It took that to make me go "maybe it's the microplane itself". I got a more expensive one and now zesting any citrus is unbelievably fast and easy. Made a huge difference!
When it comes to these types of machines, my rule of thumbs are the same with tools: 1: If you're going to be using it once in awhile, buy the cheap one. 2: If you're using enough that it breaks, buy a more expensive one to replace it.
My parents recently re-did their kitchen and got an induction hob (4-burner). It's brilliant! It heats the pans up super quick and you have so much control over the heat levels. The super fast setting boils a pan of water in about 30 seconds (I found that out the hard way). And what's best is that if a pan boils over of splatters on the hob top, because the surface isn't hot the liquid doesn't burn on or get boiled a second time around (like my old electric hob used to do, harumph). As you say the only issue is with lifting the pan to stir of sauté, etc - there's no heat once you take it off the hob, but it soon catches up once you replace the pan. It's not so bad with the wok but you don't get the heat up the side as with a gas hob, so it falls down a bit there. But my parents aren't gourmet chefs so they don't really notice a difference. All in all I'm pretty impressed with their induction hob :)

I'm a music teacher and in pre-pandemic days I use an induction plate at student recitals and receptions to heat up things like apple cider or hot chocolate. It's great because I can turn it on as soon as the concert is done and it heats quickly plus as soon as you're done you can pack it away because it doesn't heat up anything except the pot. Also I got a not-expensive one about 15 years ago and it's still going strong.
OK, I am 69 years young, now I'm in Phoenix Arizona. The only Kitchen appliances in my kitchen are: Nuwave for my counter top cooker, Cosori for my WiFi air frying, for my corner counter top toaster oven (Mostly for 18" frozen Pizzas) I use Oster and Cuisinart for making yogurt, K-Cups and ice cream makers. Maybe check them out some time.

For people who judge pretentious ingredients, that reaction to Jaimie's first smoothie was pretty high up on the snob scale! I thought it looked pretty great, and far better than most people would bother with. It's a smoothie, not fine art.
Takes a little longer to make on the moka and gives a different result (especially if you're into crema and want the milk frothing options for lattes and other milky coffees) but yeah, I personally use a French Press or Moka, both from IKEA, every day. Cheap and low maintenance. Does the job. And if I want a special coffee I go to the coffee shop. I've often considered investing in a good coffee machine but i'd still go to the coffee shop just because it gives me a reason to go outside and I like to hang out there.
An Aeropress beats any Moka pot and the vast majority of espresso machines for £30. I will shout this from the rooftops until the day I die of a caffeine overdose.
On the coffee front I have a £200+ coffee maker. It's in the cupboard, gathering dust. I also have an Aeropress which is used daily. Quicker and easier to use, definitely easier to clean and maintain and the coffee is superb. The only downside? You don't get a proper crema but I can live with that. Another added bonus is that it's compact and light enough to take camping (proper camping where you carry your stuff and don't have electricity available!)
Oh wow. For the first time ever, none of the gadgets are actually something I would personally use/need. I don't drink smoothies, don't drink coffee. Don't think I need a portable induction (already have a gas one), and I just use a hand blender to whisk everything cause I'm lazy. Haha even so, I enjoyed this episode! And for once I've not ended up adding yet another gadget to my wishlist! Edit: I meant a electric whisk not a hand blender. Oops!
I don't know a lot about these stand alone inductions hobs, but I can only say that after I switched my entire stove top to induction, I would never go back. It's about the same as gas when it comes to controlling heat. I love that the heat is off when you switch off the hobs or move the pan away. If you need residual heat, just use more heavy duty pans that keep the heat. And not even mentioning the money saved on electricity compared to a normal electric stovetop.
I live in a basement that has a kitchen area that is basically a stainless sink and a small counter. I have no stove or oven instead I have the same IKEA induction stove that takes up about 1/3 of my counter space and an air fryer oven. I also have a fridge that no longer works. Been using the stove for nearly a year but only to make pasta, ramen, and rice. A tip for telling if your pots and pans will work with an induction cook top is see if a magnet will stick to the bottom, if yes then they will work.
Something I found out that's worth taking note of is that you should be very careful & cook at arms length [60cm (2ft) ]if using an induction cooker if you have a pacemaker. The induction hob creates strong magnetic fields that can cause serious problems with your pacemaker. The more powerful the hob or number being used make it worse.
The ultimate tests for a blender or food processor are a) Breaking rice for Jok and b) Grinding meat. I'm a university student, so when I buy either a blender or a food processor, I don't and can't expect it just to make smoothies or process food, it HAS to do both. If I'm making Jamaican curry and have to whiz up some curry paste, it has to perform. If I'm making an oreo vanilla-whey smoothie, it has to work; and, if I'm craving lamb burgers and got two lamb steaks for 3$, it better grind that properly.
Watching those espresso pour as a barista of 5 yrs and internally screaming 🙈 maybe editing, but they looked fassssst. I'd imagine they've maybe had a general grind for all three. Which if they've used filter coffee is probably quite coarse for the swan/sage which makes it harder for the machine to gain pressure. So you get a fast pour and a weak coffee 🙃
I wanna see an old school cooking battle between the three normals. Maybe like an old school dinner theme, and for the love of god bring back costumes!
Having lived 22 yrs in Naples Italy where the Bialetti Moka reigns supreme, here are a few tips: fill the water just to the valve, heap up the coffee to a small mound and don't pack it down or level it off, just let it pack itself as you tighten to top on. Heavy on the admin when cleaning it up?! Dump the grounds and give all 3 pieces a good rinse (no soap! it needs to season like a cast iron skillet) then let them air dry. A video idea- creating tasty dishes with notoriously nasty ingredients (marmite, liver, dorian, sauerkraut juice, etc).
Suggestion: make coffee traditionally...roasting the beans using a pan, ground them using mortar and pestle...you know...just to make your life a little harder...😁😁
My parents' entire cooktop is induction and it doesn't actually stop heating immediately after you remove the pan unless you turn the "burner" off (at least theirs doesn't). It blinks for a little while indicating there isn't a pan there, but if you put it back on within that time it will stay on and the heat will remain consistent.

When it comes to these types of machines, my rule of thumbs are the same with tools:
1: If you're going to be using it once in awhile, buy the cheap one.
2: If you're using enough that it breaks, buy a more expensive one to replace it.
a tip for better smoothies... instead of ice, freeze fruit on the bottom yogurt cups and use that instead... cold lovely smoothie without the water.
i love how the two married men are talking about their wives when they are talking about the blender lol

I can imagine James Hoffman cringing at the coffee machine section.

The reason for the "Guinness crema" is cos the basket is pressurised on the swan. The funny thing is, the sage is an entry level espresso machine. This also forgetting about the grinder (which if you want to get the best out of your machine you're gonna need) too which to get a decent one you're looking at £3/500 quid.
Barry: it's 300 pounds, the closest you can be to being a barista for a reasonable price
Me: you and I have very different definitions of reasonable price Barry
I think he means. With you paying 5 per drink. And driving to a place everyday
I think he read that from the producers description ;)
*Laughs in Monolith*
It is reasonable compared to the highest end prices. Espresso machines can get even pricier.

Sortedfood is the underdog of cooking channels with lots of variety too, i swear. UA-cam is seriously messing up their algorithm here
For people who judge pretentious ingredients, that reaction to Jaimie's first smoothie was pretty high up on the snob scale! I thought it looked pretty great, and far better than most people would bother with. It's a smoothie, not fine art.
Well its their job to make it look really nice, since we cant actually eat it or smell it, so the only way we can interact with it is see it.
I agree
I get such a simple pleasure from James approving of... well, anything.
Sorry, those were some horrid espressos. Way too much liquid.
Also not freshly ground coffee 🤢
I've had a small Bialetti coffee pot for over 10 years and it's hands down the tastiest value for money coffee you can make at home 👌🏻
My moka pot was $6. It's hard to justify buying a "true" espresso machine when such an affordable almost-as-good alternative exists.
Try rokpresso and flairespresso
An Aeropress beats any Moka pot and the vast majority of espresso machines for £30. I will shout this from the rooftops until the day I die of a caffeine overdose.
The coffee part was hard to watch 🙈
We deserve more bloopers! I DEMAND MORE BLOOPERS!
Barry's going to get it for that wife comment when he gets home 🤣
Oops!
Do u mean an electric whisk or do you actually mean a hand blender? Just out of interest

Gotta say I love Jamie's hair. That's it, that's my comment.
It's interesting because a blender is a basic item in my kitchen. For fresh juices, sauces, soups, everything!
So, if Barry got one of the induction hobs, he wouldn’t have to remember to turn it off? 😂😘
Yeah, we're by no means baristas, as you can probably tell!
I have a Delonghi espressomachine in brushed steel, nice and sleek and can make great coffee - 100 pounds! Worth it!
I just noticed that I sit through and quite enjoy their intro even if it's one of the longer ones on this platform. O:
I wanna see an old school cooking battle between the three normals. Maybe like an old school dinner theme, and for the love of god bring back costumes!
Yes! Like an old school cinema, with crinolines and wigs, the whole shebang!
that 90 pound coffee machine looks like something from a steampunk movie, which is a huge bonus for me.
jamie describing the more expensive whisk is golden
"it was firmer. every stroke made a difference. its longer and thinner"
Those of us with dirty minds should not watch this channel! 😂😂😂😂
If you really wanna go on that route, go through the whole Plant-to-Cup process.
@@aaronlycan9861 we tried...but instead of using coffee beans we use rice and mangosteen..
Just three close male friends discussing technique, swapping hands, firmness, strokes, length, girth, and muscles.

Tip for the Moka pot, use boiling water from a kettle instead of cold water. Removes alot of the bitterness associated with this method
Am I the only one who hates this new “hey we’re pausing the video, please subscribe”? I preferred when it just popped up in transitions.
It's a source of revenue for them. A high subscriber count helps attract commercial sponsorship and is one of the primary sources of income for UA-cam content producers. It's short and not obnoxious, and putting them in the middle of the video ensures everyone sees them. Given that we're getting such amazing and educational hilarity for free, I'm happy to sit through 5 seconds of spiel to help them make a living.
I have ZERO issues with the request to subscribe, I just prefer the format that they were using in their videos over the last few months. It felt less intrusive to the viewing experience.
Dear Mike,
The new outro is excellent. Great job.

there are smoothie bowls in the us too! they're quite trendy! usually topped with fruit, granola, maybe a drizzle of honey or peanut butter...
Great episode. Just a FYI (though you are probably already aware), the cheaper blenders can’t hold up to ice for very long. So while cheap, it’s life is short if you are a smoothie or cocktail maker.

I feel like the wh=isks, and most utensils featured for cheap vs expensive, need to undergo 20 wash cycles or so to see how they hold up. I'm all for a 2 pound wisks, but I've had some twice that price where the handle finish will peel off in the washing
Watching the shots pour in b-roll I immediately winced. When you get redirected from a James Hoffman video you can immediately see if someone isn't a competent brewer. Lol. I liked it though because it made me feel like I'm good at making coffee.
