Have you ever worked with copper? One of my favorite UA-cam teacher/gardeners Charles Dowding only uses copper gardening tools like hand shoves etc. After an online conversation he said he'd love a hori hori which is a Japanese gardening knife. I have one and its my favorite gardening tool but he's not been able to find a copper one. Im curious how hard and how expensive it would end up being to make copper a hori hori.

They didn't mention the most important and useful aspect of a vacuum sealer: Food Storage and Preservation! Frozen meats and food last way longer vacuum sealed than any other way. Most places recommend up to a year for a lot of meats. Buy meat in bulk, cut into portions, and vacuum seal. It's great. Come home from work, pull steaks out of the freezer, pop them in the water bath, and then by dinner time you have perfectly cooked steaks that only need a sear.

I couldn’t afford this stuff, so I found alternatives: such as reusable sealing bags that the air is vacuumed out by hand. Perfect for sous vis, not so much for storing things long-term (since the purpose is to use and reuse often).
For the garden, I have a gallon tub from the dollar store with a lid and baskets for an impromptu hydroponic system (air stone not included) and purchased a $15 hanging LED grow light. So I spent a total of $20 on the soil, light, container and spent another $20 for an air stone + air pump. I have delicious basil and strawberries now! These products are meant to take the DIY out of gardening, which is very much a part of the hobby/lifestyle.

I imagine the people who want the herb garden want herbs without much commitment. Similar to how coffee connoisseurs probably grind their own beans and use a french press or a pour-over dripper, while the people who want a quick cup of coffee in the morning just to get themselves awake probably use preground beans and a coffee maker.

I think my only problem with this gadget is the price. For $30 (US) I can get a grow lamp, pots are pretty cheap, (especially the plastic ones), and a lot of supermarkets have little fresh herb plants ready to grow. The one thing this does have going for it is that it is perfect counter size. I would also be interested to see how it does with multiple plants!

The price kills it for me, and the grow space. Like, what if I wanted to grow a 4th plant? I'd have to pay for an entirely new one just for that one plant. However, if they offered them in different sizes, that could make the price less of an issue.

I don't know about this particular maker or model. I use a Foodsaver vacuum sealer almost daily for the very reason that I can use canning jars for most of what I'm packing in them. I buy bulk meat, grind it into hamburger, trim it into stew meat or slice it into thin bits for stir fry and then pack it into pint jars, vacuum the air out and pop it into the freezer.
I live in the desert so actual canning is a horror show (example the temp right now is sitting at 113 degrees F) because of the heat it generates indoors. I do use bags sometimes for larger cuts of meat, or some nice steaks, but those are rare instances because I can rarely afford those kinds of cuts.

I absolutely love having a vacuum sealer, it has saved me so much money over the years. The bags can actually be reused, if you clean them properly, and can be bought by the roll so you can make whatever size bag you need, but if you cut them to the same length as the pre-cut bags you end up with almost 4 times as much storage for the same price. I live in a 6 person household and do the majority of the cooking, but since I also have 3 jobs and 2 of those people are my kids being able to cook several large meals in advance and store them flat in the freezer is wonderul. The best part is this can be scaled to work for any size family, even if that family is just you.
Also the vacuum sealer I got comes with all the attachments for sealing jars, bottles, and reusable containers.

Heads up for anyone starting to sous vide put your vacumn sealer a little bit above your food item by putting it on a brick or small box and it helps keep liquids down if you cook with liquids and don't want to ruin a vac sealer. That way you don't have to turn off the vacumn sealer super quicklybefore it hits the sealer when ur sealing ur bags with liquids in it

    • @FunkyBuddha81
      @FunkyBuddha81 3 роки тому +2

Not sure how common it is in the UK but here in the states they have them that work with liquids, even back 3 years when the comment was made. They are around the same price you just have to read the descriptions. Mine just recently broke due to a quick trip to the floor and my new 1 is amazing.
I think Jamie would have been more open to it if they had gotten a cheaper/better model, also it's far more useful for food storage for normals than sous vide. My old model had a vacuum tube to even vacuum seal large bags which is great for travel since you can pack more in a smaller bag.

like a few comments, I don't use my sealer for sous vide as much as better quality storage. I introduced a colleague to sous vide steak by lending him my machine, so there was zero cost to him to test it. He bought his own because it removes all the stress about getting the steak perfect, every time. It takes longer than pan/oven but you don't worry about overcooking that £30 steak you bought. The result is he doesn't order steak at restaurants any more because they aren't cooked as well for his taste compared to what he can do at home. His independent reasoning was exactly the same as mine.

i mean, if you just get a nice skillet (cast iron or carbon steel, i prefer cast iron for steak) and a meat thermometer it's nigh-impossible to overcook a steak. the draw of sous vide is a lot more to do with stuff like fish, as well as what they did with the cucumber (infusion of sorts), and cooking directly from frozen while doing stuff.

Or look around for old Cast Iron, including in recycling places - cleaning old cast iron is easy - oven cleaner and a trash bag for a week or 2 - then seasoning.

I've had a vacuum sealer for over a year now. Other than sous vide prep, I think the primary use for the vacuum sealer is preventing freezer burn and consequent food waste. I now buy meat at Costco (for a lot less per kilo than the supermarket), and then divide the large packets up into single meal servings for me and my wife. Meat lasts for months in my freezer when vacuum sealed, and freshness and flavour aren't affected. I bought the Foodsaver brand; the bags come on a roll that you cut to the exact size you need for each portion, reducing waste. Roll bags are also much cheaper than individual bags, especially from Amazon. Highly recommended.

I inherited 3 pans and have bought 3 more second hand. I love them. Clean first. To season you can rub any oil or fat on the inside and put in the oven on
      200 F. About 2 to 3 hours. Wipe out.
I would not use seed oils, as they are rancid from the time they are made. Olive, avacodo, tallow and lard all work great.
If it does not have a wooden handle, you can use higher temperatures.
We now own a wood stove, so just set them on it for several hours or all day.
And yes, you can use soap if needed in cleaning. But I came home once to find out my daughter put one in the dishwasher. Rusted disaster. Scrubbed with steel wool. Seasoned. Scrubbed with steel wool. Seasoned. Scrubbed with steel wool. Seasoned. The third was the charm.
As I said, I inherited them from my mother in law. She inherited them from her mother. My daughters will inherited them when my husband and I are no longer around.

The herb garden is just a gimmick, because as was said you can do all that the gadget can with a fraction of the cost and a little attention to the pots. if not, then buying herbs for 10 pounds is going to net MUCH more than was shown in the video.
The vacuum sealer is a must have for freezing fresh food to preserve them and of course Sous Vide or split into easily transportable portions... that particular one is just horribly overpriced though, as you can get the same sort of sealer for 20-30 EUR which can also create just as much or more vacuum (under) pressure without the name Anova printed on the top.
The Skillet is expensive... but it is not an unwarranted expensive. You can see the quality, and from what was shown in the video, also feel it. Plus there are not many pots or pans you can use on the hob, in the oven and also (more than once) on a grill/open fire.

My concern is that the gadget booklet seems to suggest these plants are only expected to survive for 10 weeks, but you can overwinter a LOT of different herbs, as in some plants can survive YEARS, so to me that's just an admission that your plants will only last 10 weeks because they haven't had a proper day/night cycle and they are horrifically pot-bound in those tiny pots.
I totally agree, a little bit of effort and that garden gimick thing is utterly useless.

I have to disagree. I live in a small London flat and there's very few windows I can use that have enough light. I've got a click and grow and it's fantastic. I grow chilis, strawberries, basil, rosemary, thyme, parsley and occasionally some flowers in it. (I have the 9 pod version)
You don't have to buy the pods you can use your own soil and nutrients, but the water/light system is essential for me to grow anything in my flat. The water reservoir is useful as I'm away a lot for work and the system only allows the amount of water the plants need into each pod.
They last much longer than the life cycle the app suggests when using your own nutrients.
It also looks fantastic when it's full of life as if it's an ornament.
I agree many people can do what this system does without, but some people cannot, and therefore it's not a gimmick

Vacuum sealers are just really good for packaging bulk foods into smaller packs for either the fridge or freezer! Easy to write on with a pen, breaking up a cheaper big block of cheese and keep it from going blue, making ground beef into specific sized portions, etc.

Would love to see update videos on pans and such. Perhaps use them during testing. Like Jamie mentioned, the first use is always nice, but later that can change.

With carbon steel pans they only become better with use, as it builds up a thicker layer of seasoning each time you cook. Buy it for life, no toxic chemicals harmful for you or the environment and it's what people used before non-stick teflon pans became widespread.

Have the sealer (for breaking down and freezing food, not for that silliness of cooking), want the other two... esp. the high-carbon pan. I just had to toss my old cast-iron away... wife made me do it after I left it on the burner, despite me trying to convince her it wasn't "harmed"). And growing fresh herbs, etc. is nearly impossible in our apt.
    Great video, guys!

I bought a sous vide circulator and a vacuum sealer about 4 years ago and I love it.. I have friends constantly asking when I invite them over for steak again (which with Covid hasn't happened as much as I would have loved to), but as mentioned in the video, there are other great purposes for it as well.

As a bit of a side note, I appreciated Jamie saying that he couldn’t afford things at the moment. Sadly, I know how he feels!

As someone who uses a vacuum sealer a lot in the kitchen, two things: you can reuse bags, and you can separate out food and freeze it without getting freezer burn on your food. Ziploc bags will make your food freezer burn! We freeze extra fajita peppers and onions and then we always have some when we need it. My fiancé uses it to freeze out portions of meat so that they don’t go to waste in the fridge. They’re actually really useful to have in a home kitchen.

I had dismal results using ziplock bags to sous vide...I've also had the best steak of my life (including from a restaurant) using sous vide to cook with vacuum sealed packages!
The thing I hate about the whole sous vide process is the amount of wasted water and plastic.

I bought silicone bags to avoid the plastic waste but they have the same problem as ziplock bags, they don't seal properly. But you can wash and re-use the bags.

A tip for the sealing bags. If you cut the bags as close to the sealed line as you can, you can wash the bags and use them a few more times, until they get too small. Wont remove or negate the issue, but can significantly reduce it.

As someone who often relocates, I like being able to take my plants with me without 'shocking' them into a new environment

I love my indoor plant machine (I have three Aerogarden brand ones.) They brighten up my dark, old house, and I can grow fresh flowers or herbs in the middle of a Wisconsin winter.
