This film is a masterpiece. The acting. The dialogue. The attention to detail from the various dress uniform choices of the different members of the Judge Advocate. The interaction between members of the military of various rank, and the respect those ranks deserve vs the absolute respect the law demands. Everything is absolutely brilliant. This is one of the films I own in my collection and come back to about once a year. It's just a fantastic watch every single time.
This was adapted by a play written by Aaron Sorkin, his first professional writing experience. The person who adapted it was Aaron Sorkin. He is well known for writing everything in his projects. The witty dialogue is solely his. If you don't know who Aaron Sorkin is he wrote the first four seasons of The West Wing largely by himself. He is quite brilliant.
I was in the Navy, at the time this came out. At that time, the Navy was undergoing MASSIVE fallout from a s3xval harassment scandal. Both Kafee and Jessup's comments to Galloway would have resulted in them being brought up on career-ending charges.
Another fun FYI: the Navel doctor (Dr. Stone) they bring to the witness stand, that’s Nigel Tufnel - a.k.a., Christopher Guest; husband to Jamie Lee Curtis - from This is Spinal Tap.
A courtroom drama is the hardest type of film to make for the actors, writers, cinematographers, and director. EVERYONE was hitting on all six cylinders on this one. Thank you, Emma, for this reaction. It was heartfelt from start to finish.
Fun fact the Judge in this case was the same one that presided over the A-Team's trial in the 80's TV series. I got another military movie reaction suggestion for you The Final Countdown (1980) The U.S.S. Nimitz goes back to December 6th, 1941. It's filmed on the Nimitz. It's like Top Gun meets Back to the Future.
The Final Countdown is a love letter to the military. You get to see a lot of carrier ship operations and the different aircraft. Top Gun is a lot more showy.
First time I watched The Final Countdown was on a plane. Now that I think back on it, it seems a strange choice for an in-flight movie but I’m glad the airline made that choice, it’s really stuck with me ever since.
The US Navy refused to cooperate with this movie. Everything military you see here was privately acquired through firms that specialize in this field - including the marching band and drill unit. It's quite impressive.
The scene where Jack Nicholson yells "You can't handle the truth", Tom Cruise's character would be in jail for contempt of court. Because you can't yell in the courtroom. 😂
I was in the Marines and there is a sort of dirty underside. Rank goes to some individuals heads and because orders are expected to be obeyed things like this could easily be conceived of. Ordering something then lying about it and denying it. Leaving lesser ranks out to dry. Never saw it, but it could happen
The "you can't handle the truth" is an iconic line by Jack Nicholson, but Tom Cruise was epic also in his lines leading to and after that line. Both actors deserve kudos for their performances
It's also unrealistic...you can't yell in a courtroom. Cruise's character would've been held in contempt of court and Nicholson's character would not have to answer. 😂
Jack Nicholson is just always a force. And so versatile, be it fantasy (Batman), Drama (One Flew over the cuckoos nest), Comedy (As good as it gets, Anger Management), Film Noir (Chinatown), Horror (Shining) just to name a few. What a filmography. He is surely missed in the movie business...amazing actor.
Loved your reaction. One thing to understand about the Marine Corp code, is that that code has kept the world free from tyranny for over a century. The doctor is the one who should be court martialed for not doing due diligence on Santiago by sending him for testing at Bethesda Naval Hospital.. That is the real tragedy here.
I respect The Marines, but it's the politicians that are the problem. And...the world has not been free of tyranny. The world is actually becoming more unstable by the year. Part of the problem, has been weak U.S leadership over the past 4 years.
Fantastic film, with great work across the board from everyone involved, it was originally a play (although few, if anyone, in the movie was in the play, to the best of my knowledge). Really enjoyed your reaction and your engagement with the material! That's a cool headboard and similar to one I was considering recently.
A real classic Tom Cruise movie, which I've seen about 5 times now. Brilliant cast and powerfully done. Good chemistry between Cruise and Moore too. So many amazing actors that I love. Kevin Bacon, Jack Nicholson, Kiefer Sutherland. Awesome movie to review.
A new fresh look for you. No headphones. I like it. Great movie. Being a Marine, i didn't care for the movie when it came out. Over the years , I found this to be a great movie. I love Jack Nicholson in this role.
I love this movie. The acting is top notch. The cast was brilliant and carried the story. It is one of those movies where you notice details watching it again. Thank you Emma. I love your channel and your comments.
Since Christmas is coming, a Christmas movie that I recommend is Just Another Christmas (Tudo Bem no Natal Que Vem), I watched it without expectations, but this movie surprised me
it is said that actors from OTHER movie sets, including bruce willis, came to the set of THIS movie to watch jack nicholson's courtroom scene 😉 ENJOYED your reaction 👍☺
I'm not a Tom Cruise fan but if this movie or The Firm pop up on my TV, I'm going to watch it. Let alone one of my favorite reaction channels reviews it. By the way, Tom Cruise is a lawyer in The Firm too.
There's a movie for you if you want to see a little more of what it's like to be a marine. Its called Full Metal Jacket.. its a older movie set back during Vietnam War. It's ruff it mental but it's still a good movie...
Such an excellent reaction. Director Rob Reiner is such a craftsman. He did other films you've watched like The Princess Bride and Misery. And speaking of Jack Nicholson you must react to AS GOOD AS IT GETS if you've not seen it yet. ❤ and Best wishes.
Yes, Guantanamo Bay Naval base is an actual base. It existed before the Cuban revolution in 1959 that's why it is there even today. It is where the US keeps the POW's from the war on terror.
My parents were both stationed at Guantanamo Bay, when I was a kid. I went there several times, when I was enlisted, for Operational Propulsion Plant Exams (OPPE).

"The Rainmaker" (1997) starring Matt Damon and Danny DeVto, is a legal drama with Matt Damon playing the young lawyer taking on an insurance company. Generally rated 4 stars but Amazon respondents give it 4.5 stars. Or, for your next courtroom movie, you could go with the star-studded film with Dustin Hoffman and Gene Hackman and John Cusak and Rachel Weisz from 2003, "Runaway Jury". And then finally, going back to the black and white classic movie days of 1959 and the James Stewart, Lee Remick, and Ben Gazzara legal drama "Anatomy of a Murder" with its various 4 and 5 star ratings-- but with the best by far musical score coming from the legendary jazz composer and performer Duke Ellington.
What was awesome? the FACT that she was clueless about 70% of the movie. Were you actually listening to her? Her comments to most of the things were so far from being correct. I understand that she isn't American so I'm not surprised she didn't understand a lot of it.
The heat and exposure to the sun that close to the equator must b paid attention to. Ifn u don’t u’ll suffer, which could b maddening. I was there in May, not even the hottest part of the summer and it was tough.
Just a little FYI - I’m a former Marine - the drill (guys twirling the rifles) they show in the beginning, those aren’t Marines; more than not college kids. [Just] Two things that give that away: one, they’re not as good; two, Marines would never kneel. Another little thing, you can do tons and tons of nitpicking, in the final count scene, Kevin Bacon’s tie knot is terrible, wouldn’t happen. If any Marine (E-1 through O-10) saw that they would politely say something.
Tom Cruise stars as a brash young man living in the shadow of his prominent father. Top Gun? No. Top Car? Nope. Top Bar? No no no, it's Top Law! Tom's range was rather limited during this period, but he played his role well!!
America still maintains a base in Cuba. At the time this film was made it was a training base for ships and their crews to train in various areas. The training was designed to make ship and crew work together as one unit before deployment. Today Guantanamo Bay is home to a prison staffed and run the American military where we hold terrorist suspects from the 9/11 attacks and other terrorist attacks.
You asked "Do you think it's ok to train them like that?" Yes. I do. 1. They're Marines, not a glee club. They're training for war, the most horrifying thing I can imagine. 2. Their training seems to be working. They are extremely good at what they do.
Jack Nicholson did multiple takes off camera acting exactly the same way he did on camera for the "you can't handle the truth" speech in order for the director to get authentic reaction shots from the other actors.
The look on Kevin Bacon's face after Jack Nicholson's You can't handle the truth speech was his actual reaction to everything Jack Nicholson had said. Also please react to another great military courtroom film Rules of Engagement (2000).
Guantanamo Bay is a military base in Cuba that the United States permanently owns. The United States took Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines from Spain when they won the Spanish American war and years later the US would give the Cubans their independence if they agreed to allow the US to keep that part of Cuba.
Great movie. You should see other legal dramas like Rainmaker 1997 or Civil Action . Also a great lawyer movie with Tom Cruz is The Firm. and Murder At First 1995 a movie based on true movie about injustice. Also Erin Brucvich is a great movie.
