I used to sing with Barry back in high school. He was incredible even then playing piano, oboe, drums and organ. Elton John had nothing on him when he was only 16! RIP my old friend~
Barry will never be forgotten. It's a tragedy he passed for everyone!! He was so positive and encouraging to me as a kid in his teens. I would go hear him play at hotel bars here in Rochester back then. He would have to deal with bad pianos but would make them sound great because he was that great. Barry had tremendous facility on the instrument. My brother once told me Barry was playing a festival that Oscar Peterson was playing. After hearing Barry play, he told my brother that he didn't want to go on after him. True story. I know Barry Harris, Tommy Flanigan had great admiration for him as well. Getting to know the whole family so well overtime I would go over the house after Barry passed I couldn't help but feel so sad for them. I know how proud they were of him. He will never be forgotten here.
@@arame29 he did. It really bothered me when I would go hear Barry that the audiences had no clue what they were hearing. Barry could really get into many bags. He absolutely loved Bill Evans and Sonny Clark. He knew the history of jazz as much as one could. At one time he owned all but one Blue Note record ever made.
Would listen to Barry play at his childhood home as a little girl, in grade school in music class & last listened to him at a restaurant on the top of a fine hotel on East Ave in eary 80's in Rochester. He was an amazing talent with a sensitive heart. I'm sorry we lost Barry so early & for any difficulties he endured that crossed his path. G-d bless Barry ♥
When Buddy brought his band to Rock Island High School on 16 November 1985 Barry was on piano and played this beautiful song as a solo. David L. Saelens (drummer, Rock Island, IL.) Posted 16 March 2019
Barry was a student of my Uncle Dick Egner who taught him as a child protege. Sad he didn't live long enough to develop a solos career and fulfill his amazing potential. Thanks for posting this-Uncle Dick would be thrilled.
I used to see Barry at a small bar we called JP's in Rochester, NY in the winter of 1980. I heard later he was back in town, going through rehab. So sad to hear he overdosed later.
Just awesome. i have an audio clip of Barry doing a solo piece during a Buddy Rich concert in Germany 1977 at 20 years old as well as a trio outing with Buddy and Tom Warrington on my YT channel. RIP Barry.
I found an interview with Steve Marcus saying how tough B.R. was on Barry when he first came on the Band but eventually they found each other and ended as great friends. I sure hope this is true. Imagine Mr. "I Am The Band" welcoming this solo piano feature on HIS STAGE! Have no idea what took Barry, but how very sad he could not last.
that's what great leaders do when they see potential Vince Lombardi did it with certain players, Bill Parcells also, When the coach stopped riding the player, it meant that he had given up on him

Todd how old was Barry when he joined Buddy?
And did Steve Gadd ever come back to Rochester during your school days?

Brought tears! What a gift he had!
I grew up around Barry and played at various jam sessions with him around Rochester in the 60s-70s. Indeed a great player.
I am sobbing at the great talent and emotion that we have just heard.
Superb pianist, consummate musician.
