  • September 29th, 2023, will be etched in New York City's history as the day the skies opened with an unparalleled ferocity. The deluge was so intense that JFK Airport recorded its highest 24-hour rainfall since 1948, with an astonishing 8 inches pouring down.
Brooklyn faced nature's fury head-on, as three hours of ceaseless rain equaled an entire month's average downpour. Witness water roaring into basements, stranded vehicles, and impassable roads that brought the Big Apple to a standstill.
This video dives deep into the heart of the devastation, spotlighting the worst affected regions like Brooklyn and Long Island. From shattered rainfall records to streets that became rivers, experience the magnitude of NYC's epic flood crisis. I live in Brooklyn, in the area you filmed. I cried watching this video. We are one floor up but my downstairs neighbors flooded and we helped them. I went to Prospect Park yesterday after 8 straight days of rain. It was sunny and everyone was happy but everyone was talking about the rain and how scary it was. Seeing this helps me realize how dangerous it was. I’m so thankful that I’m OK and that I didn’t choose a garden apartment.

This is a powerful piece of storytelling - especially given the speed with which you brought it to UA-cam. You tell a compelling story and stay out of the way of the camera. This is clearly about the people featured and not so much about you and your reactions. THe scenes of strangers coming together to solve problems in real time with real consequences is good medicine for so many feelings of division and conflict in the majority of media and mindset these days. How they bent their backs and pushed with mighty force to calmly escort the stalled cars to shallower waters was inspiring. Also, your conversation with the woman reaching into the muck with her bare hands to clear the drains and your conversation and suggestion that she take a shower soon was telling. It might be gross to go further into it but I think necessary for people to understand how much waste, sewage and other dangerous things are swirling about at their ankles in these situations. Blessings on you and all New Yorkers.

It's beyond frustrating that the people who are in the worst spots, won't receive any help. People who have to live in low end apartments definitely don't have the ability to get insurance coverage, or any sort of support for a situation like this. It's the biggest issue with our modern society and the way things function. It's the average person who's getting hit the hardest and unable to get options because the average working person can't afford options, let alone afford basic living as it is... i really hope things improve. Especially with the rise of more and more issues... it's really frustrating

People should be warned that driving through deep flood water can short out the car's entire electrical system. It's very dangerous at night because you can't tell how deep it is. You won't be able to unlock the doors or roll down any windows and you get trapped. If the car drifts into deeper waters, you will drown. If you ever find yourself in this situation, break the glass of the door with a blunt object - or remove the headrest from your seat. Most importantly, aim at the corners of the glass. Stay safe out there.

It's nothing money can't fix. It's a historic brownstone that did a historic remodel to, but I live a mile higher than you guys in Denver. Even the flooding is crazier here, mostly due to the change of soils from sandy to more organic and it affects the permeability of the soil's ability to take on water.

You need to understand that your sewer and storm drain system in New York are combined, so the flood waters are not good to be in. It is surprising just how many cities still have this system.
Thank you for sharing this with us.

It’s crazy that people were caught off guard by the storm and flooding. I live in California and I knew what was coming. If you don’t watch the news, at least watch the weather reports, people.

From Brazil here in Sao Paulo I have seen some, but for the past 10 years it is getting worse. I always found the under the level apartments kinda charming in NYC suburbs, actually most houses looks like it siding with doors. Now see it underwater is heart braking.

Welcome to Florida's yearly weather situations... Best advice I can give is help one and another without hesitation or judgement. Be kind and remember its not just you but all your community, county and such. Programs, numbers and help will be slammed and you will feel like no one is helping but they are!!!

I've lived in south-central Texas my whole life, and flooding is common where I'm at ... Rules for water over roads: 1. Don't go in it, 2. If you must, go slowly, and 3. Never take your foot off the gas ... It's quite frightening stall your car in deep water, even more so when you feel it begin to float - - Very nicely done video
