    This is how I felt after I got the Prismo. After a week of attempts I realized that I should just appreciate the AeroPress for what it is. I still like the Prismo but I use it for brewing regular AeroPress brews now.

      huntdonger yeah I was never able to get the Prismo to do what I wanted it to do, or what I expected it to do. Definitely not a bad attachment, just isn’t Espresso.

      Yeah I think the Prismo is great as an attachment for regular coffee since you no longer have to deal with paper filters and you don’t have to worry about brewing inverter anymore. But it’s not worth attempting to make espresso with

      @@jonathanwhalen7076 what I’ve found out is: if you don’t use any attachments, use a paper filter, espresso grind, tamp a bit and add a wetted paper filter on top I managed to get a bit of crema out of the aeropress. 16g grounds, 45g water worked fine. Obviously it won’t pass as espresso by a long shot but it’s what I use for milk drinks.

    I actually really like the prismo but for a totally different reason than stronger brews - I like that it lets me effectively do inverted aeropress brews without any of the fuss that typically comes with them.

    I got a prismo not for the fauxspresso capabilities but simply for regular aeropress coffee without the drips

    Despite the lowish extraction, the TDS is higher than I would have thought.
    I don't think anyone should expect the Aeropress to produce a real espresso but I think it is a really cool option for someone who wants a small, sharp shot that hopefully hold up well to milk drinks for small cap or latte!

      Yeah I was pleasantly surprised overall, but not sure how it holds up to milk. I didn’t take it that far yet.

    I use my AeroPress instead of pour over, not instead of my espresso machine. I like the coffee that the AeroPress produces, and I just think of it as a form of black coffee. I love my AeroPress, I love my espresso machine and I love pour over :) Three types of coffee for me.

    It all boils down to budget and kitchen space. Both are very limited in my case.
    So since I personally will usually need an espresso shot not to drink it up straight, but mostly in another beverage (americano, latte, mocha etc), I will try to to get that out of the very portable and convenient AeroPress. Or as close as it can.

    With or without a pressurized pf, the aeropress cannot produce the pressures required for espresso due in part to the width of its brew chamber. The diameter is 57 mm or 2.25 inches with a horizontal area of 3.98 square in, meaning the downward force is about 4x your target psi. So reaching 9 bars or 130 psi (pounds per one square inch) on the aeropress requires approximately 520 lbs! Reaching just 1 bar requires almost 60 lbs. I recall reading somewhere that no more than 50 lbs of force is recommended for the aeropress.
    One interesting thing about this portafilter set up is that it uses percolation passing clean water through the bed of coffee instead of the usual immersion brew methods done with the aeropress.

    I've been pushing an espresso grind of 7.5 on my Baratza through the joepresso without much issue. I did find it useful to flush it with water after every use. It doesn't surprise me that you broke the glass. Using a scale, I was pushing anywhere from 60 - 90 lbs of downward force.

    In my opinion the advantage of the joepresso is the low maintenance cost in comparison to cheap semi-automatic machines.

    AeroPress can never get to the pressures needed. 9 bars is 130 pounds per square inch. without measuring the area of the AeroPress disk, that's gotta be upwards of 500+ pounds of force needed. I've seen a wooden lever accessory for the AeroPress (similar to the Flair) that could help achieve higher pressures, but would the AeroPress even hold up under those kinds of forces?
    I'd love to see a narrower AeroPress designed for making something closer to Espresso...like the Cafflano device, but even with an area as small as 1 inch squared, 130 pounds of force is a lot.

    My two cents: similar to the fellow prismo, you will definitely not get your typical 8-9 bar pressure espresso. But, that doesn’t mean it cant make a good coffee or concentrate. Sure it does not recreate what it is trying to achieve, but instead I think that these types of add-on devices are precursors to its own unique, ‘grey-area’ genre which in the future stands in the middle ground between standard aeropress and espresso.
    Just a little thought to enrich the debate.

    I don't believe one can get an espresso out of a non-espresso machine/method. But it is really comforting to taste something espresso-like, and that's what I strive for

      Same here. Lol the guy who makes this attachment was all over Facebook arguing with people who were asking questions about it. The was an excellent review and I agree completely about beating our heads against the wall to get the aeropress to do something it’s not meant to do.

      The Real Sprometheus yes you should. Lots of people watch this channel who have no hopes of having a true espresso setup. Aeropress anything is of great interest to them.

    I’ve gotten pretty close by simply placing a SECOND FILTER on top of the grounds. You have to press like heck. Takes forever. Results are closer to espresso. Of course Espresso Forge does the same thing, but WAY BETTER.

    Espresso is a very specific process, and not even cheap "real espresso" machines do a great job (maybe the Flair). I have the Prismo, and with a right recipe, I'm able to do capuccino or other milk drinks at home, and for that it does well. It might be the case with the Joepresso.

    I suppose the fact that I seriously weighed the possibility of packing my stove top espresso maker when going camping tells you how important that first shot of the morning is to me. (Kids bike or my coffee, hmmm). After a week of instant, which I haven't had in years, I bought an Aeropress after all the rave reviews. Now I see that despite the fuss, there is a plethora of attachements to explore. I think I will just accept that on camping holidays the raw aeropress coffee is close enough and enjoyable. Maybe I'll look more into the inverted method I see talked about, but ultimately, just accept that you can't get espresso out of a non-espresso machine

    I have been using aeropress for3 yrs,i agree with your observations
    First day itself i broke my favourite coffee mug
    Now i use stainless steel container.After using varous grinds and grain sizes,the quality is much better than other methods but no way comparable to branded coffee.Thanks for your video

    To prevent clogging at fine grinds and to up tds: how about putting a wetted paper aeropress filter in there first? Certainly does interesting things with a regular espresso machine and basket.

      Yeah that’s something you could try to maybe up the extraction. But I feel like the point of review is use it as the creator intended, not to pull out all the stops and get hyper experimental.

    Trying to get to espresso-pressures in an aeropress to begin with seems difficult. Assuming the aeropress is a straight cylinder with an 8cm diameter (the plunger has a diameter of 3,28'' according to their website) rounded down it needs some serious force to reach those bars.
    8cm diameter gives an area of 50cm^2 rounded down. The force needed to reach a certain pressure is the pressure*area. Plugging it into a pressure calculator (to skip the manual conversion to bar) gives us a required force of 4000N to reach 8 bars. 4000N means you need to put a bit over 400kg on top of the aeropress to reach that pressure.
    You can also look at it as needing to depress the plunger so that you compress the volume to 1/8th of what you started with before getting a flow to roughly get 8 bars of pressure.
    There's a reason lever machines usually have a pretty long lever arm on them, that way you can exchange the force required with travel distance of the arm.

    This is a question that's obsessing me, but if espresso is strictly in that range from six atmospheres of pressure to a staggering 9, then for how long has this been the case and what do we call the entire category of pressurized brewing that may not even surpass or even reach a bar of pressure? Bialetti Moka Express has espresso right in the name -- after all, the Italian word for express is espresso. But now it's in that nebulous category. The Aeropress can be compared and contrasted from the Moka fairly. They both have somewhat similar pressure profiles. The Moka pot has a longer history and better aroma. The Aeropress has better temperature control and more clarity and complexity of flavor. Aeropress filters are sometimes put in Moka pots. Metal filters are sometimes bought as an accessory to Aeropresses. Clearly, these are two brewers that belong in the same category as each other. And I'd argue, a lot of home countertop "espresso" machines with pressurized baskets and considerably less than even 6 bars of pressure. But what would we call this category? Perhaps domestico, if we must use Italian words? I dunno. Maybe there will never be a universally accepted category for these methods, only a "not espresso" disclaimer. And I'm not sure if I'll ever be okay with that.

    Ah yes, just what I wanted, an underextracted shot. Honestly people keep trying but the aero press is not meant to make espresso. It does not have the leverage or stability needed. If you want truly portable espresso, then the best bet would be the flair, even though I prefer the Cafelat Robot, the flair wins in terms of portability.
    I travel all the time with my aero press , aergrinder, beans and an electric kettle. I am able to make a really good cup of coffee on the road. If I wanted espresso on the road I would get the flair which is $160. Which is a reasonable amount of money for something that actually will make espresso and is portable.

      cameronbatko I’m with you. The Flair is an awesome little tool. So far the best hand press espresso I’ve had. I need to get ahold of a Robot too though.
      The Aeropress is my go to for traveling as well. It’s just so simple, and nearly unbreakable.

      What about the ROK! Best in my book, and good value. However, $40 attachment that takes no space to $160 Flair for traveling, seems excessive to me. If you love medium roast go to an Indi Cafe when traveling, if you love dark roast go to Starbucks I guess, or try Joe

    While this is edging closer to espresso from a non espresso device, if it doesn't quite cut it then it's pretty obvious that it just never will. Honestly, I enjoy the aeropress for what it is. A good, pour over coffee which one can sit and enjoy over 15 minutes while on vacation.

    I just got an AeroPress because I moved into college and I don't have the space for an espresso machine in my dorm. I'm pleasantly surprised by the quality of coffee the AeroPress produces as it is. I was gonna get a Chemex but now I don't think I need one. When I found out about the Joepresso, I was gonna order it almost immediately but after watching this video, I think it's not worth it, because I do not have my own grinder and I think it'd take quite a bit until I find the perfect pre-ground speciality coffee for this bad boy. I'm honestly conflicted. I do love the AeroPress for what it is, but sometimes I do feel like an Espresso, and Starbucks just doesn't quite cut it.

    Folks hack their mocha pots using high pressure bike pumps attached to the bottom where the water goes. Wonder if somehow a bike pump can be hacked onto the top of the plunger of the aeproesso

    This to me is a step to that person at home that wants the occasional "espresso" the occasional drinker is rarely a conissuer. I would have a use for something like this when I'm baking and am pour my shot into something like a frosting or ganache, and body mean absolutely nothing.

    I've been using the Prismo for 4 months. After trying to up the extraction with paper filters placed on top of the coffee grounds in the aeropress and some other tricks, I decided to get the Cafelat Robot. It gives me a true 9 bar spro, and is what it is and what it claims to deliver. It's not a half-measure (as the Aeropress with Prismo is). Having said that, I really like the aeropress for its coffees being full and rich - when I need a larger coffee that has a bit more of body than the Chemex or a classic V60, the Aeropress is the way to go.

    Great video! Surely this is the closest you will get to making espresso with an aeropress? It's not going to be possible to generate anywhere near the pressure you will need to produce the viscosity and (real) crema of traditional espresso, but with a pressurised basket you can mimick these things fairly well. Makes it a very attractive alternative to more expensive electric machines that use the same baskets.

      Isaac G thank you my friend. So far this is the beat option I’ve tried, but I don’t think the Aeropress will get there. I’m so attached to that high pressure and real crema that even with the pressurized basket almost making it there it still just feels like it’s missing something.

    I bought a caflano espresso maker to replace the aeropress. It is smaller and needs less coffee and lighter. Good for our backcountry camping trips. When I grind the coffee really fine I am able to get foam. We like the taste but would be interested to get an option from an expert

    This is similar to pulling a shot on a cheaper espresso machine that uses pressurized basket. It is halfway between very strong coffee and espresso. For the masses this will suffice as getting a real espresso machine is out of reach in terms of price and time it takes to learn. I do think this is better than the Fellow Prismo but still not espresso and more like espresso like. If it is thin, it might not even work well in milk drinks but probably better over ice or as an Americano. Good effort though.

    The inventor of this was spam posting about it in my favorite fb espresso group trying to convince us it did qualify as espresso 😆 originally we thought he was just an enthusiast, but after a little dialog with him it was revealed he was the JOE behind Joepresso lol. Seemed like a nice guy overall, so no hard feelings here. It was funny for me to see this product reviewed though after the little bit of drama we dealt with. I’m glad you agree with us, it doesn’t qualify as espresso... sorry joe 👋🏼

    Could you do a video about that adapter that turns a pour-over into a vacuum pot? ;-)
    I fairly quickly, after much experimentation, came back to making Aeropress coffee as recommended by the inventor and have done so for years. Smart guy. Cranks out that reliable "Aeropress" style coffee, every time.
    For espresso, I use the Nanopresso. Philistine? Maybe. But it's a 95% solution for my taste buds, esp in milk (I use cream) drinks. I often feel a little bad about rarely patronizing coffee shops anymore, but that kind of discretionary expenditure was easily reallocated to better choices.

    My personal opinion is that Aeropress is not capable of making a pure espresso, props to the guys who made this thing for progressing in trying to do so but I think that should be the end of it (the experimenting) aeropress coffee is meant to be aeropress coffee and no more, that's why it's unique.

    Did you try putting aeropress filter paper at the bottom of it to see if filtering out particles helped with the need for coarser grind (and broken glass!) ? I've been using aeropress filter paper on the top of my puck to (very successfully) prevent channelling since I watched your video "COFFEE SCIENCE - Higher Extraction Using Aeropress Filters". It's taken things up a level on my ancient San Remo compact (~25years old).

      George Taylor I didn’t try that, and it may help elevate the extraction. But I think in terms of a review I have to keep it less experimental and more sticking with using it as the directions dictated.

    imho the difference can be less perceived in milk drinks. as a multi purpose tools at that price, I don't think Aeropress needs to prove itself further and or be everything.

      Yeah the milk can definitely blend nicely with some shots and hide any issues. But I agree, the Aeropress doesn’t have to do everything, it already does so much so well.

    Personally, I don’t really understand chasing espresso with an aeropress. It’s just not gonna happen, but then again, I don’t really like espresso and prefer other methods. I think the aeropress shines at making beautiful, smaller drinks 180-250mL that are harder to make as pour overs unless you have a really good grinder since you have to grind coarser.

    This is definitely interesting to me as a milk frother. I already have a Flair but don’t want to faff with a Bellman and the alternatives seem expensive for a glorified French Press (and whose goal is less comparable to steamed milk). But a joepresso would make great use of the convenience of the Aeropress

    So what is the difference in taste when you compare it to the fellow prismo for example?
    Since the recipe for that attachment requires you to agitate and steep quite a bit before you put pressure on it, I'm thinking the extraction rate would be relatively high. Did you analyze that one too?

      Tor Hunemark from what I remember the taste was pretty similar to the Prismo. I was going to do a closer comparison, but the valve on my Prismo is broken and just pours out with hardly any pressure.

    I'd be interested in comparisons between this and other hand held espresso makers, say the Cafflano Kompresso, the Nanopresso etc. Also be interested in comparing this to low end espresso machines that use pressurized baskets or pods (Nespresso). Interesting little device!

    I think a lot of people over analyze espresso. Does it taste good is the only question we should ask ourselves. That is all that matters. The rest is simply navel gazing.

    How does the TDS of the Joepresso compare to that of a Nespresso coffee pod?
    I’ve always felt that pod coffee tastes thinner than espresso, and also seems to create ‘crema’ by producing a frothy, airy foam.

    Always amused by we humans, desperately trying to get a thing designed to do one thing really well and morph it into something that does (or rather, doesn't) do some other thing(s) not very well. If ya' need espresso, support your local indie cafe, or lash the cash for a decent machine.       I'm going to say a very controversial thing. I like dark roast espresso. The kind most Indi Cafe's don't make. Out of a half dozen cafes I like espresso from just one in Grand Junction, CO. Starbucks does, it's too ashy but I'll take it over the other 5 Indi Cafe's espresso personally. What I make on JP using dark roast locally roasted coffee from the same Indi Cafe's is great in comparison to what they serve. It's a personal preference, like choosing perseco over a champagne, guilty on both counts. Point being, I can get what I want with JP. Espresso Afficianados can't, the third wave coffee is not about consistent taste, it's about single origin, subtle notes and acquired taste. For most people it's not what coffee is about.

      @@123romanr Hey Roman. Well, at the end of the day, it's all about personal preference. Nothing controversial about your preference...it's YOUR preference and that's all that matters. Here in Scotland, there is a very healthy Specialty scene, especially given the relatively small population. That said, when I had my own cafe, I always maintained that the vast majority of our customers, wanted a great coffee that tasted of...well, coffee! Therefore, a medium/dark roast worked best and I gave them what they liked. Me? I love medium roast Specialty thru' Clever Dripper, Chemex or Aeropress. Keep it simple, but keep it yours!!     I would like to see comparisons of flavor between all the aeropress espresso attachments and a moka pot.
    I enjoy a moka pot every now and than, can the aeropress attachments compete with a moka pot?

      I think this is close to a moka pot in terms of flavor. But the moka pot does create a bit more body and texture. At least in my experience.

    Totally agree that people really are just wall banging with this stuff and just need to give it up. The Aeropress is an awesome little brewer that’s incredibly versatile, but it’s just not capable of making espresso no matter what you stick on. If you want a portable espresso maker don’t buy an Aeropress.

    Coffee snobs rarely know their basic chemistry, it would seem. The lower pressure in an Aeropress can be compensated for with higher extraction time. It is possible to make something that tastes virtually identical to espresso with the Aeropress. People get too tied up in corporate definitions.

      That’s a fact. But it doesn’t need nearly as much pressure to actuate as the pressurized basket.

    I usually drink Americano style black coffee and currently have V60 drip, Espro Bloom, Moka Pot and Aeropress which I use to make it with.
    How would you rate the Joepresso in terms of creating a coffe shop quality Americano against the other methods I use?
    Also, would be interested to see you review the Espro Bloom

    I have an aeropress and love it but "espresso-like" is not espresso. Every weekend I hit a local coffee shop and let the barrista make REAL espresso!!

      exactly! When I don't want to deal with the Flair, I just make a strong shot from my aeropress (20g coffee + 50g water, stir and 2 minute brew time) to use in a cappuccino. final product is fast and easy and not a bad compromise IMO.

    hmm, I think this might be the wrong way of looking at it. I definitively don't think we will ever get amazing espresso out of an aeropress, but I think that is not what this product is ment to do either. It is a total entry level product, and I ask you, is there any better way to make something similar to espresso for 40 bucks? I feel like this might be a stepping stone for starting to make espresso at home for the people who might not have 100s of dollars to spend on an amazing grinder and a good espresso machine. Though aa 40 dollar device that uses equipment you might already have? That's something I could see people spending

      doc8125 well that’s the thing about the way it’s marketed. If you read the Kickstarter it uses the term “true espresso” among others. It’s spoken about as if it lives up to espresso from a machine. If it said instead “a less expensive, entry level espresso maker” I
      may have come at it from that angle.

    Do you have any thoughts on using this just to produce a regular cup of coffee? It strikes me as kind of similar to the Delter coffee press, in that the grounds are in a separate compartment as the water, and then you can control the rate of introduction of the water through the grounds. Is it at all useful or interesting to have that capability for a full cup of coffee?

      Mike Ouellette I haven’t used the Delter, but I’m sure you can run more water through the puck, but I think it would get over extracted. Better off pouring it on top of hot water Americano style.

    Lets stick to the great taste of Aeropress as is. There is a lot to love about it's taste. And if you need you need an espresso make it the proper way.

    I've shattered 2 of my favorite coffee mugs with an aeropress prismo attachment since 2/12/2021. I have been using an aeropress with the prismo attachment to approximate esspresso for a year. And when I have more time in the morning I use a flair espresso device, which is less forgiving but makes a superior shot of espresso (when you get all the factors correct) than the aeropress prismo.
    However, I am intrigued by this joepresso attachment and may consider ordering it. Can it be acquired through the evil empire or do I need to entrust my CC data to some random website?

    Thanks for the video. Did you experiment with finding out how much water you'd need to increase to in order to get a better extraction percentage? Or perhaps better tasting?

      Randy Rose I toyed around a bit with ratios. But generally stuck within the parameters in the instructions. I figured in terms of a review it’s more about seeing how it functions within its intended methods. I’m sure there’s more extraction to be had, but 20% would be a stretch and would likely require quite a bit of fuss.

    If you are 180 pounds, you can get about 2.5 bar with all your body weight. This is a bit dangerous for your kitchen, equipment, and self. And it's still not enough for espresso.

    ive tried making a shot in the aeropress for a long time now. tried all permutations and combinations with all the variables. maybe 1 out of 10 shots tasted ok. i love the aeropress but its just not meant for a nice shot.

    Thank you for trying, keeping chasing the dream. Just purchased a Prismo and now I am already wanting to return and I even gotten it yet. If I really want an Espresso I guess I will break out my Nespresso machine. The Aeropress can do the rest. Thanks for your search.

    Short answer: Of course not. Doesn't mean its a bad product. But you will never buy a small gadget for the Aeropress and suddenly get real espresso from it.

    I hate the marketing the company is doing for this product. I have seen many brand new accounts on Reddit and Facebook made just for promoting this product. This product is interesting. Still, I don’t think the AeroPress is made for expresso. Companies should not try to make it make expresso. Just enjoy it for what it is. Get an expresso machine for real expresso.

    To get 9 bars of pressure at the puck you need something like 518 pounds of force applied to the top of the Aeropress, which means some type of lever system, and which would (probably?) damage the Aeropress. “Espresso adjacent” is probably the best possible outcome for this device

    It seems like no matter how hard we try as coffee nerds to cut corners and do things more cheaply, espresso is best made by an espresso machine. A high quality dual-boiler machine is going to be better than a cheaper single-boiler machine.
    The hacks are fun, but they’ll never get you quite where you want to go.

      He's ONE FUNNY GUY but that is an advantage. Espresso or milk sitting and waiting for a boiler to heat up or cool down causes deterioration of a shot or the milk. Speed is a time advantage but also a quality advantage.
