I guess the metal screen you inserted is the culprit for allowing water to spill out while pressing. I did cut the outer circle of the same metal filter you used, so it fits inside the basket, instead of on top, this seals it totally off. It withstands 3 bar when using my whole body weight and even 9 bar of pressure when using my Co2 Aeropress mod.
Awesome content as always sir Lance! Finally getting some more manual/portable espresso reviews. Would love to see a showdown between the Joepresso, Nano/Picopresso, Cafflano Kompresso, and maybe a Flair classic.
Thank you for cranking out the great content. Years ago I read through that crazy long thread on one of the coffee forums regarding the aeropress where the inventor kept claiming he was getting crema and that it was espresso (they finally kicked him off). I can't believe how hard you had to push for the extraction to get a decent reading. Kudos to you for trying this "hack" and actually getting what I would consider a real shot out of that setup. Keep up the great work!

Note(s) - this takes a lot of force, if you use more coffee it might be impossible to push. - fine grinds go through the metal filter, the paper fixes this and the metal keeps the paper in the basket, I use the paper for ~6-8 shots before replacing. - this leaves a dry hard puck that just pops out in the trash.

Thanks so much for the review @Lance! Glad to see you measured the TDS and liked the taste I have a few comments and clarifications, not to change anyone's mind but to help get a better shot if nothing else. 1. Joepresso comes with a pressurised basket, the non pressurised baskets are available separately. You get more crema with a pressurised basket. 2. Water leakage you are seeing is because you're using the aftermarket screen on top of the gasket. You can also use a paper filter under the provided shower screen or instead of the one you used. 3. Shower screen is mainly used to keep the grinds in place, not to disperse the water. In an espresso machine water is coming from a thin pipe, here the AeroPress provides an even water column. If we don't use anything to keep the grinds confined to the basket you'll get immersion brewing instead of perculation.
1. Pressurized isn't make more crema. It is a faux crema, more of a foam. 2. Yes. I am aware the water leakage is due to the screen on top of the gasket making incomplete the seal. 3. I'm also aware of the last part, but it was a poor design for the screen, as I noted. Could've been an easy fix for the screen to make it match the diameter of the basket, like the flair pro 2
This is a great option and about as close as i am gonna get while out backpacking in the woods. Especially for this price point. Alot of people complain that its not the best or this or that, but aeropress literally made the GO because they knew they had a big market for camping and backpacking.
I’ve experimented a lot with AeroPress to get it closer to espresso without too much effort, however the biggest issue I found out with all of these contraptions is that the rubber tip of the pump does not have a good enough seal for high pressure maneuvers. While you were able to press pretty hard and level this time, AeroPress can explode its contents easily if you are not level or if something gets in the way of the rubber tip’s path causing the seal to break and having yourself and kitchen covered in coffee grinds. Not a fun experience. Happened to me multiple times using different methods. After that I just stuck to a normal method (close to James Hoffman’s) until I bought an espresso machine.
Not sure when you ended your experiments, but the latest Aeropress plunger seals are not so much based on rubber, but silicone and they tend to last quite long, even for espresso style higher pressures. Maybe worth picking up your experiments!
Things I’ve tried: 1. Used 3D printed tamper to compress the puck in AeroPress. 2. Used a regular filter on top of the puck to keep the puck intact. 3. Tried Fellow attachment to generate pressure with different methods. 4. Tried many other methods found online…. Results: coffee flavour is worse than a more traditional recipe OR I get an explosion of scolding hot coffee grinds in my face. 😂

I don't have a Decent (way beyond my budget), so I didn't dig deeper, and maybe that's why I'm confused. But if you do have an aeropress, you actually have a device for easy filter coffee! So why go through all these extra steps?
Because filter 2.0 tastes is really good. And not everyone can afford a Decent to try it. So, it is a way for people without a spare $4000 to make the same high extraction cup. It provides a MUCH different cup than just filter. Same body but with punchy acidity and insane sweetness. I've never had an aeropress recipe give me a cup that is anywhere near it. In fact, I don't ever touch the AP because I don't like the cups it produces.
My JoePresso came with only pressurized basket. Additionally, their shower screen is kind of useless. With those things I mostly have a hard time to make a perfect cup of espresso. Do we even need a shower screen here? I mean in espresso machines we need, because a pump pushes the water into the chamber in a small tube. But that doesn't happen here, it's just the full water column on the puck. So I'm not sure they do anything than increasing the possibility for channeling. The only issue I see is maybe when you fill up the chamber the puck can be destroyed. But even then a melodrip or something similar would be a better solution.
Hey! Love the observation, but I would have to disagree heartily. Instead of relying on speculation, though, i'll bring up a real world example- the Flair 58. Without the use of the puck screen as a further device to disperse the water during the pressurization of the water through the puck, you get horrible channeling because the water screen that comes stock tends to shoot water through the center. The extra dispersion is needed to stave off any massive holes in the middle of the puck. Same goes here. EVen with a Melodrip, you will have massive holes that will form from the water dropping and you will have less control over the water column going through the puck. the screen allows for controlled percolation.

would be curious to see if the aeropress was filled with more water. the compression of air wastes a lot of energy that could be directed to the water pressure through the coffee. of course it would be very difficult to have no air but maybe as little as possible would help. air is like a spring which gets much stronger the harder you press as hence the need to bleed the brakelines on your car if there's a bubble.
would be even neater if there was a syringe with a one-way valve in the centre of the aeropress plunger so you could pull out all the air during pre-infusion. still won't be "espresso" but id be curios to see the results. might even try it myself :) great vid btw

James hoffmann made an aeropress cappuccino video where he used 18g of slightly coarser than espresso grind size with 80g of water infusing it for 90 seconds. I keep on wondering what tds refraction would that method measure ? Also the one you made in this video, would it provide a good suitable base for a latte or a cappuccino ?
Picopresso is GOOD! That's real espresso. I've been using it for a few months, and it can rival a shot from the flair. @@mikkisdiyobsessions3742 that sounds risky. The slightest unevenness on the cup or a drop of water could send it edge ways. Sure! this video is targetted to those without espresso machines, or those without the means to get one. I'd prefer not having to use this, either, but reality is most are relegated to just an aeropress. So, thought i'd play around with this.
I don't understand why there's a obsession with converting the AP into an espresso device. There are plenty of options to craft espresso and after trying different manual devices I can say the only way to get espresso is getting an espresso machine, so it's better to save some money and make the investment if you want to get really into espresso. Good video, anyway
Hey Nicolás! Sure. It is always ideal to use an espresso machine for espresso. It is also ideal for people making ice cream at home to use an ice cream machine. But both of those machines are prohibitively expensive for lots of people and just saving money isn't necessarily realistic for a big portion of the population. So, with both of these, people find ways to recreate a similar outcome without having to shell out loads of dollars. I'm just trying to make this awesome hobby accessible to all!

I'm not sure but I could redo what he did and measure! And yes. It would! great base for milk.
Cool video! I've been looking into a travel espresso setup and came across the Wacaco Picopresso. Do you have any opinions on it?
I have not had the pleasure of using one
@@LanceHedrick I would like to see you use one... hint. hint.
Picopresso is GOOD! That's real espresso. I've been using it for a few months, and it can rival a shot from the flair. Obviously, you don't have the kind of flow control that a lever machine provides, but it makes damn good espresso. How do I know you ask? I struggled with it for a week before making a great shot ;)
link for the aero press stand and the other ports filter ?
How many takes did it take to get the box landing in your hand perfect?!
actually, that was the first and only take!
Link to the brewing stand?
is using a regular aeropress filter instead of a mesh a terrible idea?
just won't be as effective in dispersing water. But better than nothing!
Thanks. I’m not looking to strain push for my coffee
So how is filter 2.0 different from an Americano?
it is not espresso. An americano uses espresso.
Me overwhelmed, me wants quick and easy coffee in the morning. Me using plain old unmodified aeropress, alias POUA.
Great! Then this video isn't for you! lol it is for the people trying to emulate espresso on an aeropress.
@@LanceHedrick I would like to emulate espresso on aeropress, it could be good bargain. But this is so complicated to operate, I don't see any covenience over "so called espresso" mentioned on aeropress box. But it has nice logo tho.
When using the Prismo do you grind your beans as fine as espresso?
not quite!
So if you dont have a stand that can take all this force, can you generate any foam?
A sturdy ceramic cup, or plastic cup can easily hold your body weight, probably 3 times!
As Mikki says!
@@mikkisdiyobsessions3742 MY weight 3 times?? I don't think we've met
@@michalis9 I tested 240 kg already on a 2 USD IKEA ceramic cup and I stopped there, because that resembles about 9 bar of pressure in the Aeropress.
@@mikkisdiyobsessions3742 that sounds risky. The slightest unevenness on the cup or a drop of water could send it edge ways. Not to mention that repeated application of such force could start causing issues at any point, and any microcrack would make it explode.
No, if I were to go this route (I don't know why anyone would tbh, when something like the picopresso is readily available) I'd modify a cheap drill press to hold the main body and apply controlled vertical pressure.
Hey Lance! Could you add a link for the golden filter screen thingy on the description?
Oh! Sure! Let me grab it really quickly
@@LanceHedrick Thank you! Nice vid.
just found your channel! great content! commenting to bump the vid
“While this cools down”
Ahh, you pulled a Hoffman. Never dilute with off boiling water 😂.
It was like 190 degree. I have a baby tongue. I like 135F
Lol
@@LanceHedrick that’s still too hot for me. I prefer around 47C or 116F. Or around that range by a few degrees
I mean 135 for me to not scorch my tongue. Lol
Wow, pushing that hard on that little tripod stand with the glass cup under it makes me nervous.
haha I get that. But that tripod is robust
@@LanceHedrick Probably better than putting the aeropress right on the cup :)
Lance: a lot of Lime, vibrant acidity
Normal People: This shot is sour as hell
haha! I'm gonna change my ways based off this comment. lol
You’re the best Lance!
thank you!
Enjoy the content, but not sure it’s the correct etiquette to ask people to like/subscribe/donate before they’ve seen any content?
He put out a lot of great content already, and even most fans need reminders to subscribe, even after having watched tons of content already.
@@mikkisdiyobsessions3742 ask at the end, if people are there to hear it, then maybe you’ve earned it. I’m not a hater, just grates on me
It's pretty typical etiquette, but if it bothers you, i'm certainly not pressuring you to watch my videos! I have seen a direct correlation in asking at the beginning rather than the end with more subscribes, likely due to people who have watched previous videos and realized they hadn't done so. So, i'll continue doing it. Appreciate you commenting, though!
Dunno if it's just me but this video was uploaded at 720p max. Just an FYI in case you haven't seen this issue!
Oh! I didn't notice! Thanks for the heads up
"I push hard!"
hahaha another fun video!
haha! I almost broke a wee bit of a sweat.
This was great, hopefully Ross at Odyssey Espresso will get you an Argos soon for you to review.
I'm supposed to be getting one soon!
Great video. 👍🏻
Thank you, Lance. 🙏🏻
thank you, as always!
Wonder how much it tastes alike to espresso
Much less body, similar potency, higher acidity.
I might get this only for filter 2.0 on the go 😅
For sure. It is labor intensive, but cheap and easy
@@LanceHedrick as long as the coffee is good I don't mind a bit of labor.... You're talking to the guy whp whand grinds Nordic roasts for blooming espresso every morning after all LMAO
Prismo doesn’t work with aeropress go. Does Joe Presso?
I'm not sure what the aeropress go is!
Looks like to get it to work you need the stand, screen and a gym membership 😂
hahha definitely need a screen!
This is actually more of an ad for that aeropress stand haha
Ha! It's not even from an aeropress. It's from the forge
Can you please look into making some content on how to extract different flavours from the same coffee advance techniques such as flow profiling?☕☕☕
Sure thing!
Oh damn! Really creative, nice one
Thanks so much for watching!
It's 4pm here and I already drank 3 double espresso and I said, ok enough for today
As I started to watch the video, I turned on again my Rancilio Epoca for the 4th double 😂
haha! I love it!
The next step is a lever mechanism that the Aeropress fits into. Internet! Get on it.
Really the only real solution for espresso from an Aeropress and it kinda already exists in various forms. The Rok, Flair, Robot etc…
One of the commenters has made a co2 contraption to make it go to 9 bar!
@@LanceHedrick yep and it’s cool but also kinda proves the Aeropress isn’t designed to make espresso.
THE HAIR IS BACK!
haha! Only took 9 months or so lol
Accident waiting to happen 😆
Perhaps!
Keep the great work!
thank you so much, Xavier!
that buddha screen.. becoming one with the puck
The only way. Enlightenment
The Happy Tamper logo wins on suspicious quantity, while the Joe Presso logo wins on suspicious quality.
hahaha! I love it.
leaving a comment below cos Lance is awesome
Meh. I just need to replace my plunger on my Aeropress to get a little more consistent pressure: I'll keep espresso
tools for espresso machines. Good video though. Thanks Lance! :)
Sure! this video is targetted to those without espresso machines, or those without the means to get one. I'd prefer not having to use this, either, but reality is most are relegated to just an aeropress. So, thought i'd play around with this.
Joepresso sounds like a joke name, like Biggus Dickus, or Joe Mama
Life of Brian reference. Love it!
My Aeropress arrived today. Don’t let me buy another thing, I already own too much :’D I have a cafelat robot so I don’t need it ;)
Haha! I'm such a bad influence
Stop! Daddy Hoff's gettin' jealous!
So...the joepresso logo is a pointing down ****? Somehow that indicates that you won't be very happy with the product I guess....weird
It is... something pointing down haah!
I don't understand why there's a obsession with converting the AP into an espresso device. There are plenty of options to craft espresso and after trying different manual devices I can say the only way to get espresso is getting an espresso machine, so it's better to save some money and make the investment if you want to get really into espresso. Good video, anyway
How much does it take to save up for an espresso machine that can give you control over pressure, ratio, temperature and contact time?
Hey Nicolás! Sure. It is always ideal to use an espresso machine for espresso. It is also ideal for people making ice cream at home to use an ice cream machine. But both of those machines are prohibitively expensive for lots of people and just saving money isn't necessarily realistic for a big portion of the population. So, with both of these, people find ways to recreate a similar outcome without having to shell out loads of dollars. I'm just trying to make this awesome hobby accessible to all!
@@mikkisdiyobsessions3742 a lot of money, but I'm not talking about hi-end machines but something that could achieve better results like the flair or any lever espresso machine.
@@Jazid46 I am sure that operating a flair, etc is much more streamlined and long term feasible, but IMHO I don't think they produce better espresso.
I will stick with my Fellows attachment
sure thing!
Im so sorry on your divorce, noticed the shadow on you finger. It must have not been an easy separation, judging on the bruise. Please accept my deepest condolences...
Hey! It is a wedding ring tattoo
Hard pass! People need to stop trying to make the Aeropress do something it’s not designed to do.
Even if it tastes good? Interesting take.
@@LanceHedrick And much cheaper than a pro espresso machine!
Absolutely!
@@LanceHedrick yeah, with the effort you put in trying to pull that “shot” it’s a hard pass. There’s better alternatives than this.
I just made an Aeropress a few minutes ago!
Nice! How was it?
@@LanceHedrick Great! Ecuadorian offering today from a local roaster (it’s not Onyx level, but still tasty). I don’t have the Joepresso or the Prismo, but I enjoy a small cup with the 11g of coffee to 200g of water recipe.
I feel like the stance you're talking to put the pressure you need on the system is really bad for your shoulder. Make sure to take care of yourself!
I was pushing less with my shoulder and more using my arm as an anchor for my body. I used to weightlift competitively. I'm not too worried but thank you!
@@LanceHedrick cool, you did Olympic style
They still trying to flog that dead horse? James Hoffman reviewed this 10 months ago and said it definitely doesn't make espresso and had the same issue with the filter as you.
Shows they're not willing to listen and learn.
Sorry, not a dead horse, but Aeropress can be modded to be perfectly able to do Espresso!
@@mikkisdiyobsessions3742 You can't do espresso on a aeropress. You can't create enough bars of pressure.
@@westhulltiger True on a stock Aeropress, but you can mod it to actually do 9 bar of espresso. Not super easy, but do-able.
Interesting! i didn't catch his review. I will say, it depends on how one qualifies espresso. What I made on the first shot I would consider espresso, tbh. The original patent on an espresso machine produced only 1.5 bar at maximum pressure.
