The funny thing about Dollars & Cents is that Colin's bass part is in a minor scale throughout the song, so Ed's part makes it constantly resolve and unresolve between a major and minor contradiction. Same thing happens during the Airbag intro. Ed's 3 note line (E-D-C#-D-C#) is in A major, while Jonny's low E string riff fluctuates between major and minor, and ultimately resolves. This tension is what makes their interplay so interesting.
Airbag's intro is insane, There's three guitar riffs going on at the same time with different rhythms but it feels cohesive somehow
As a drummer who can tell he has a distinct style but can't really explain it, if you made "How to play like Phil Selway" I would literally die and go to heaven!

What is brilliant about Ed beyond his mad skills, is his harmonic backing vocals that lay the road for Thom’s slippery vocals. Oh, and he’s brilliant at sewing the fabric of seeming chaos that blooms into the beauty that is in every composition.
Hats off to you for nailing these sounds. Great video....just getting in the ballpark would have been revealing.
Interesting. I'm pretty sure Ed doesn't sing harmonies on the albums. The harmonies always sound like Thom overdubbing to me. And we all know how fond of overdubbing vocals Thom is. I'm pretty sure Ed just does those live because Thom can't sing two things at once.

I love Ed's playing on How To Disappear Completely. He has the mix on his reverb all the way up so there's no dry signal, which took me years to recreate. The only pedal I could find that does that is the Mooer Shimverb, though I'm sure he uses something else

Great video! Ed is definitely an underrated member of the band. No doubt he adds to the band’s definitive sounds, but he gets easily overshadowed by the other two guitarists’ fame.
Great job breaking down how Ed makes such a beautiful background for the rest of the band to play in! He really is key to the Radiohead sound, and adds so much, thanks!

Definitely love Ed's style. He reminds me heaps of Dave Gilmour in that he writes compositions which create a beautiful soundscape.

I'm a big Ed fan. I have his Fender Stratocaster *signature* guitar (altho there is no signature!). Great guitar, with a Fernandes Sustainer at the neck, Texas Special in middle, and a SD JB Jr. at the bridge. Lots of fun!

Ed uses the dl4 to roughly double the speed of the loop for ful stop. I usually just do the double...your reverse addition sounds good

could you give us a general idea of how much such a wonderful pedalboard setting would hurt our wallets?
also, could you share your opinions on VSTs plugins that simulate pedals and amp presets digitally?
vh ks it depends on whether you go for the actual effect brand names or close substitutes, but Ed’s main classics (Memory Man and Whammy for example) go for around $200 each. Still, you could almost certainly imitate the philosophy of the effects chain with a set of cheaper pedals. Ed has also used cheaper pedals as well, like the Mooer E Lady (electric mistress flanger clone) which is just $80 and sounds fantastic!
I don’t use a lot of pedal and amp VSTs, but I have occasionally used those built into Logic Pro X and they’re pretty solid! I like the Bass Amp Simulators Ampeg model, the Guitar Amp’s AC30 style, and for their Pedals I think the GRIT (RAT clone) and Candy Fuzz are fantastic. They even have a whammy imitation!

What Effect is used in 15 step ?
On the original album I believe he’s using samples of an instrument called an Autoharp! And putting it through a whole mess of delay and pitch effects. When Burne Holiday covered the song we used a looper to make a short sample of the notes of the G#m chord, then used a Whammy to shift it around and some delays to make it more warbly.
what's that swirling modulated sound during the Dollars and Cents part? just artifacts from the Whammy?

@@JoeEdelmann3 that's wild! that sound always drove me nuts cuz i had no idea what Ed was using to get that modulation. I assumed maybe it was a combination of his Lovetone pedals he was using during the Amnesiac sessions. Wow. Do the artifacts only occur with the Whammy 4 or are they also present on the newest version?
SolarFlaresMusic they’re most pronounced with the Whammy 4, but you can get similar ones in classic mode on the Whammy 5!

These are really great videos. I really relate in a lot of ways to what you're doing here. When Ok Computer came out I was about 16, and only a couple years into playing guitar. Pretty quickly I taught myself every guitar part and a lot of the keyboard/rhodes parts and I used to set up all my pedals, press play on the CD player and play along from beginning to end. One technique I've always been really curious about is that iconic Ok Computer trem delay, used mostly in Ed's part of the Airbag solo (Where Jonny's part of the solo seems clearly delay free and possibly with a slide involved) and I think Jonny in the Airbag breakdown at the end, and also in Ed's part in Exit Music. I know it's basically a delay used while plucking trem style, but I've never been able to work out a solid version of it. Are multiple delays being used to achieve the sound? What speed of delay time is used, how much delay feedback, and how does the speed of the picking correlate to the delay time? It seems the feedback is low or the delay time is fairly quick since you don't really hear lag repeats when they change notes, slide up or down to a note, etc. I'd love to see a video on this if you've managed to figure it out, or just your thoughts in a comment.
I think you’re right that in those cases Ed and/or Jonny are typically using shorter delay times and less repeats, just to thicken up the tremolo picking without distracting from the melody! Ed definitely uses multiple delays a lot on other occasions though, to make ambient pad sounds all you need are two delays at maybe 75% ratio to each other so the repeats kind of bounce off each other in least common multiples and eventually sound like one blur with the feedback. I’m definitely planning to make more videos on these and other topics though!
Hi Joe, question. Does the Ditto looper let you repitch the Ful Stop loops? ie play them an octave up/down when played back at double/half speed, like Ed does with the DL4 looper?
James Duffy hi James! Yes, sorry if It wasn’t clear, but that’s what I’m doing in this example (with the Double speed function specifically). There is a Double and a Half speed mode in the FX section. You cant continuously manipulate the pitch to other speeds though.
@@JoeEdelmann3 Thanks for the reply! Yeah I saw that, but I noticed it doesn't repitch them, it only changes the tempo.
James Duffy oh, it does still repitch with those FX though! If you see when I record the loop it technically is an octave below where I end up triggering it... I also have a Whammy engaged with an octave harmony that may be making it hard to hear.
@@JoeEdelmann3 holy cow, you're right, I didn't notice you played it an octave lower to start. I was focusing too much on the knob fiddling. thanks for the clarification! (and I was being dumb anyway, because you didn't change the tempo while playing with the pedal, just reversed it.)

Richard Long indeed he does! The Ebow and the sustainer pickup work on very similar principles, but the pickup helps free up both hands! (Notice how he gets to use the whammy bar there) You do have to sometimes give the string a little bit of a play/press to start the sustain though.
