so to sum up story - there eternal conflict between angels and deamons, eventualy angel (or archangel, not sure) inarius and lilith (daughter of methisto) fell in love, and decided to make a safezone from the conflict - sanctuary, other angels and demons who also got tired from war went there, eventualy spawning mortals from their union. worldstone (shown in last cinematic of diablo 2) was to drain/keep mortals power low to hide the sanctuary. there was a coup in hell and lesser evils allied against 3 greater evils (methisto, bal, diablo) and banished then out of hell to sanctuary. methisto, bal, and eventualy diablo ware captured in/bound to soulstones by horadrim (led by archangel tyriel). methisto soulstone was hidden in zakarum temple, but he evetualy curupted priests, bal was bound to tal rasha in tomb in desert, which he would stay locked in body of tal rasha. and diablo was in deep under tristram catacombs. thats lore/backstory of events that happened before first game. why did tyriel destroy worldstone in end of diablo 2? even tho bal was killed but he managed to corrupt worldstone, thus probly curruption might spread hru it into all mortals or soemthing like that. tyriel destroyed it, making large crater out of mountain in process, and in turn unbound the power of mortals. nephilim was early children of demons and angels with powers beyond both, worldstone drained them into normal mortals, with worlstone gone some mortals raised back to similar power levels like nephilim of pre-worldstone time.
Diablo is a fantastic series. I would recommend starting with Diablo II: Resurrected (and look up a Diablo 1 story explained video) if you want to play through the whole story. The mechanics are very much of the late 90s/early 2000s but they are so well designed that it continues to be one of, if not *the* best game in the franchise. Diablo 4 is much more modern in terms of pacing and mechanics so you might enjoy playing that one most. Whether you end up playing any of them or not, if you enjoyed these cinematics, you'd probably enjoy the many lore deep-dive videos out there that explain the whole story and delve into the details and backgrounds of everyone and everything in the series.
So the angel at the end of Diablo 3 is not Imperius, basically all the arch-angels are his brothers and sisters and so he calls Malthael brother here too. Malthael was once the angel of Wisdom but has since (diablo 2 I believe) changed his name to the angel of death. As for Diablo 4, Lilith is often used as a character when it comes to religious works based on christianity. In the religion itself she is the first wife of adam before Eve. In most fictiounous works she is described as the mother of demons. In this game specifically she is the creator of the mortal race of man. Long story short, when the angels and demons were in their eternal war a demon and a angel instead fell in love and defected from the war. Their children were the nephaelim (the player character in Diablo 3 is the last Nephaelim) however both angels and demons feared them because they would become too strong for either side to handle. So to keep them safe Lilith used the worldstone to create a world in between heaven and hell. In the games called sanctuary. She is still a demon though so it's not like she has humans best interest at heart.
You cant destroy a prime evil they just get reborn just like the angels. So they trapped the 3 prime evils in the stone to contain them but the stone corrupts pretty much anyone it touches. The only reason imperius was defeated by diablo was because all 3 prime evils was inside one person.
The lore reason why this fight between Angels and Demons with humans caught in the middle is a recurring theme lies with the nature of Angels and Demons. Both Angels and Demons both came from the same primordial being called Anu. The first being in creation. As far as I understand it the essence of Anu is eternal and thus Angels and Demons can never truly die. When a regular Angel dies a new individual is created. So far Tyreal is the only Angel that has died and came back as himself. A similar process is true for Demons. While the Prime Evils such as Diablo can be killed they can never be fully destroyed because their essence returns to the Burning Hells were it reforms. This is why the conflict is Eternal. It's honestly a bit messed up but also clever why by the creators of the game to realize a game that technically could go on forever.
Diablo 2 the wanderer is the warrior hero from diablo 1 when he took the stone in diablo 1 he implanted it into his forehead to contain diablo watch the other clips from diablo 4 inarius vs lillith or all the videos ull love especially the add on vessel of hatred coming in Oct
Really liked your reaction man, I am a fan of the story of Diablo because it has so much depth. However, I don't know as much as some other when it comes to it. However since you seemed to like the story of diablo you must watch "Diablo IV | Book of Lorath" It's more diablo 4 cinematic videos and this really gives you way more story about the lore of diablo and what happened in a very well-done way. It's extremely enjoyable and the voice actor is the best in all of Diablo games and should answer most of your questions so far. They are a few smaller videos so you should do all of them in 1 video. Enjoy! :D ua-cam.com/video/bEfVNgk_Hho/v-deo.html
My early friend introduce me to the bnet. EU system that was first impelent, all the boys were startling for diablo #1 original launch. Myself i didn't find that much of content in the game so i mourn-wait for the release of diablo2

If you give Diablo IV a try, I do recommend reading The Sin War trilogy. Decently written books.

IDude I can't believe you missed the Inarius versus Lilith cinematic! It might even be better than the announcement trailer cinematic with Lilith!
