Based on the classic wuxia novel Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils by Louis Cha (known worldwide by his pen name Jin Yong), SAKRA stars Donnie Yen as Qiao Feng, the respected leader of a roving band of martial artists. After he is wrongfully accused of murder and subsequently exiled, Qiao Feng goes on the run in search of answers about his own mysterious origin story-and the unknown enemies working to destroy him from the shadows.

There will be no other donnie yen in this era. Yen is getting old but his style of fighting in the screen is so thrilling and amazing. He's a different beast when he moves, Fast, snappy, hard hitting. That's why I love to watch movies when he's in it or he's the actor since his 80s & 90s films with legendary yuen woo ping. Now he's directing it makes him so more interesting.

Demi Gods and Semi Devil. I loved the wuxian tv series when I was a kid, back in the '80s. Chin Yung rocks! So many good stories he made.

As a kid, I still remember the Dragon 18 palms, the beggar gangs and of course the jade cane.
This movie bring back old memories.
I had to watch the ending several times to connect the dots. The main character was being used by his late father and the Yan prince to kill all his enemy. Before the main character was still a baby, the Begger gang was tasked to kill the father. They couldn't kill him, so they target his wife instead. Long story short. The father fake his death and left the baby near the edge of mountain. The Begger gang adopt and raise the baby as their own. The Yan kingdom and the late father secretly frame the Mc by killing all those closed to the Mc, hoping he would kill every Begger gangs.
Absolutely incredible. Donnie is one of the wonders of this world.

This Movie was AMAZING...Brought me back to the Sunday afternoons of Kung-Fu Theater on USA after Church. It was because of Kung-Fu Theater that gave me the love for Kung-Fu Movies.

I am expecting this adaptation to be way off from the original novel because initially the main character of this novel was a prince from Dali Kingdom during Song Dynasty period where located around modern Yunnan Province. And the character Donnie Yen play is one of two sworn brothers that prince make when he wandering in Song Kingdom due to some plot reason.
However when the novel releasing chapters by chapter back then, that two sworn brother become more and more popular and end up being the main characters of the story as well and make it the first fictional novel with three main lead and three different plotline that merge together.
In order to adapt this novel into a normal screentime movie, apparently they have cut out the other two main lead and that two main plotline as well. So there are plenty of plot issues are bound to occur, such as that foreign monk who play with fire was one of the main villain in that prince plotline and he met with Donnie Yen character initially also because of that wandering prince.
And also there are plenty of fictional martial art style that works almost like the Last Airbender comic way in this novel as well even tho this novel published decades earlier than the comic. So it might look ridicule if it ain't handle properly just like how the Last Airbender live action movie adaptation end up a couple years ago

This is just part one of the planned trilogy movies I think. The rest of the plots you mentioned will be addressed in the later parts.
I finally got a chance to see this SPECTACULAR film in blu ray! The fight choreography looks absolutely beautiful and It's a great work done by Donnie Yen as Director which IMO is his finest yet. Way better than Yip Man 3 and 4 and I hope to see a sequel to this. A must see and I might even get a 4K copy if available but the blu ray looks flawless.
Love me some Donnie Yen. Will definitely watch.

Jin Yong (AKA Louis Cha) has finally after decades of being immensely popular as a writer of "westerns" in China, in the vein of Zane Gray, has been translated into English. Him and Gu Lung (the Shaw Brothers commonly used writer) created this genre which became Kung Fu movies. This has fabulous duels, and should be big fun.

I actually feel like this could detract from the original work cast using non-martial arts actors because from memory those actors made the fictional powers more immersive like the fictional novel. Like Donnie is using different martial arts, playing a completely different character in a different era, using fictional powers, but his movements look like his old characters. Honestly he doesn't look in character, he looks like his old characters but now with added chi powers. Even when he's using palm and claw attacks, it still felt like his older characters doing the striking, not this fantasy character. I expect to see him move completely differently since this setting is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. Now I appreciate much more how Jackie Chan moves in Drunken Master 2.
I also don't like how the choreography formula is the same as Ip Man where is has a very solid position in the center while newbs rush him one at a time. They need to disguise this to make it look different but they didn't bother disguising it and it gives a feeling like they are recycling. This fantasy character is supposed to be so dominant he ends fights quickly and powerfully (think Mike Tyson 'BOOM' to end a fight, as opposed to Floyd Mayweather dancing for the whole 12 rounds). The fact that Donnie Yen is the star made them add so much choreography that the character is doing 10x more striking than what my impression of him was.

I've done 5 min google search. Apparently original novel of this movie “demigods and semi-devils” got a movie adaptation not too long ago “2021”. And there's still “2003” one too. The original novel was published in 1963.
I still haven't watch nor read the movies or novel. But I might since I love hong Kong 90 wuxia movies and series since I was young. Looking forward to this one too.

it was part of a super long wuxia novel so it is easy to get confused unless you read or watched some of the tv series.
