I’ve enjoyed David Sanborn since the 80s when I discovered his infectious blues almost soul singer style thru his sax. Always a heartfelt feeling of joy in his music in a style that many others have imitated.

David is a Giant ,The Real McCoy ! Been a fan since the early 80´s before he got a record deal and I mean vynil records, yeah, that far back. Had the pleasure to hear and meet the man in small NYC jazz clubs. He has the rare and unique quality of playing one single note and be instantly recognizable.
Great band, all outstanding, high caliber pros as usual. Specially Nicky Moroch - guitar, flawless as always and nonevethat arpegio crap. Just simple, old school, bluesrock 3 finger playing, plugged str8 into a vox , solid and crisp, just the way I like it. He´s in the same level as guys like Larry Carlton and Robben Ford. Great concert, thank you so very much for posting!

Don't forget Hiram Bullock's guitar either! I play harmonica (51 years and was full-time pro by age 20) and have adapted many of Sanborn's tunes/arrangements to harp, especially the more swinging bluesier ones like this. Robben Ford is always in my top 5 guitar players that I listen to but lately been listening much to Hiram, bought one of his CD's, etc. and he is one of those ones that can swing, has blues but also that solid Jazz foundation....or more like the blues foundation with the Jazz on top......I may like him equal to Robben Ford now. They are all great! Jeck Beck, Hendrix, Duane Allman!!!! Danny Gatton, Wes, etc.

Anybody knows why david is not tightening the screw of the neck of his sax? I saw it falling down 3x during his live performances. He's one of my idols but it bothers me to watch the neck of his sax bending down.

I got in touch with David Sanborn in 1985, when he was the opening-act for Al Jarreau. Great performances of both and I caught them live both as often as possible. Great gigs and wonderful memories. ❤👍👏
Also loved David's guitar-players: Mike Stern, Hiram Bullock, Dean Brown and Nick Moroch.
RIP Al Jarreau and Hiram Bullock. 💐

I've seen David a number of times. One of the most memorable was at the Fox Theater in Detroit. Marcus Miller on guitar. They were playing "Lisa" and Miller has a remote pickup (probably super common now, but 25 years ago not so much). Dave and Marcus are playing off each other, back and forth. Miller goes running down the center aisle and disappears, all while playing. A few seconds later he pops out in one of the balconies. Fantastic!

@@curtisfairbanks9089 Yeah, probably Hiram Bullock on the guitar. He loved walking through the audience while soloing and sometimes dancing on a table ... 😆🙃 ... even leaving the room and still playing together with the band 100 % tight. Wonderful guitar-player, miss him so much.
And of course you're right about Marcus Miller as a bass-player, also one of the best. 👍🤝

i never liked sanborn, seems like he was wasting my time when i could be listening to garrett, brecker, or watts. i found my way here looking for an example of sanborn playing hard bop or avant jazz. i didn't think i'd find any LOL david seems to put more of his passion into being commercial and getting money on pop records and using that as a platform to make commercial jazz records where nobody tries to hard to say anything meaningful on their instruments for fear of it not being "accessible" to the mainstream. that was always his forte, kind of a grover washington meets dave koz. this is a nice change of pace for david and has an excellent backing band in support. but i still don't FEEL anything as sanborn works through the same old tried and true bebop scales and solos with lackluster enthusiasm. he's way more into it when he knows MORE MONEY is on the table.
