I remember when this console first launched in Asia in 1990, and Americans couldn't wait for the U.S release so people were paying $700 to $1,000 or more for the Super Famicom. Surprisingly, you could play the Asian ports by ripping out a couple of tabs on the game cartridges that were designed to make them not fit the U.S consoles. The Asian ports were of much higher quality too. I played the original Mortal Kombat in both U.S and Asian ports on the U.S console, the Asian version was identical to the arcade, while the U.S port had much lower quality graphics. The difference wasn't in the hardware, but rather the games themselves.

Yeah you can buy an import cartridge reader for US SNES Consoles. Your right you just need to remove the tabs inside the SNES and your good to go without buying the converter.
