    Oh Yvette, Yvette, I'm rather afraid you've only just scratched the surface of (potentially) rude place names in the British Isles... as I feel sure fellow subscribers will be pointing to even as I type... talking of which I am particularly fond of Scratchy Bottom, Dorset (came 2nd to Shitterton in the list of rudest place names); Titty Ho, Northamptonshire; Nob End, Lancs (now a site of Special Scientific Interest apparently - make of that what you will); Blackdikes in Angus and as others have said you did well to delicately avoid Cockermouth in Cumbria. Steet names widen the pool with Beaver Close in Surrey, Fanny Avenue in Derbyshire, Slag Lane in Merseyside and here in High Wycombe we have that old post man's favourite, Cock Lane... STOP tittering at the back!
    I also recall that in the early days of the internet if you tried to enter Scunthorpe in a search engine you were asking for trouble for some reason...
    Ah such harmless fun...

      Speaking of Scunthorpe, back in the 90s I was working in the IT side of Direct Marketing. One day I was tasked with writing a COBOL program that would filter out any profanities from our data upload process, data that would eventually make its way to car dealerships to follow up on potential sales leads. As a team, we had a great few days compiling a list of any naughty words we could think of, which I then added to my program. It was considered quite a success, until the day several months later we had a complaint from the dealership in Scunthorpe, asking why they'd stopped receiving sales leads. The penny dropped when I looked at the logs of all the data rejected by the profanity filter! 🤣

    I can see the village of Netherthong across the valley from where I live now. The next village up the valley is called Upperthong, and further down the valley is the village of Thongsbridge. The "thong' is is a Norse word for a strip of land, hence Upper, Nether (lower) and bridge. I lived in Netherthong for many years, it has a church, shop, school and a great pub.

    Piddle is the name of the river in that area of Dorset. Also the people of Shitterton love the name. The council wanted to change it, mainly because people kept stealing the metal place name but the people of Shitterton protested and raised funds to have a huge rock with the village name carved into it instead of the metal sign

    You're right, these place names you've mentioned are Old English not Viking. Wetwang is mentioned in the Doomsday book as Wetuuangha meaning 'field for the trial of a legal action' and you're right about Dry field becoming Driffield.
    Nether, as we know means below or underground and thong which was thwang in Old English means narrow strip of land, there is also an Upperthong, meaning above the narrow strip of land. I used to live by Netherton in Yorkshire, ton (tun in OE) meaning settlement or enclosure.
    Love our old place names, I come from York in Yorkshire and we have so many street names changed from Viking words, some changed so much the meaning is wrong like Coppergate for eg. obviously sounds like where copper was made or worked but no it's derived from Koppari Gata, Koppari= Cup, Gata = Street = Street of the Cup Makers = Coppergate??
    Coming from Yorkshire, not bothered about any of the places outside my County because, "If it's not in Yorkshire, it's not worth bloody visiting" Lol.

    You forgot to mention the River Piddle in Dorset. There are two parts, the Upper Piddle and the Lower Piddle. You mention yourself that many of the rude names are from the past including the Saxons, the Angles and the Vikings (they were Danish Vikings that invaded Britain not Norwegian). What sounds rude now was just normal, they had their own 'naughty' words!

    • @mikesaunders4775
      @mikesaunders4775 4 роки тому

      Plenty of Norwegian Vikings settled in NW England and Yorkshire. Danes (many of whom came from what is now Sweden) preferred the East Midlands.

    • @Georgestella100
      @Georgestella100 4 роки тому

      @@mikesaunders4775 I'm not saying there were no Norwegian Vikings, as you say in parts of NW England, but eventually the Danish Vikings dominated, which is why we had Danelaw in eastern Britain as opposed to Anglo Saxon law in the west.
