I just got a small boat, and watched a ton of your videos on trolling techniques. I was able to catch a few Kokanees without downriggers in Green Peter. Thanks for all the material.
I love going back through you videos a second, sometimes third or more times. I learn so much more! I also get to see if I failed to Like the video before. It gives me a chance to atone for my sins!
I usually dont follow the boats at detroit in my kayak. I start fishing immediately after launch, head straight towards the island and make that left. Tons of kokanee on that left side of the island. there is a fallen tree on the island. I dont ever go past the fallen tree turn and make circles. been limiting by 9am every time.
I caught a limit in about an hour by the floating portapotty yesterday lol
This is a great video. My son and I are in the process of learning how to catch Kokanee. Your instructions here will be a tremendous help. We were out last week for the first time and based on what you've shown on the Hummingbird, we were into the fish. I thought it was schools of bait fish though. We will definitely be heading back out soon! Than you for the great instructions.

I was about to launch my kayak yesterday from Detroit Reservoir when I heard someone behind me ask "are you a spilt milt follower". I guess my emperor dry suit gives me away lol. Great to see so many of us out on the water together! Caught a limit by the way! I thought the limit at Detroit was 5 per day though....
The limit for Kokanee is 10 @ Detroit. First 5 are considered trout and then you get a bonus 5 Kokanee. So alot of people only keep the Kokanee, unless it is a pretty large trout.

Tyler, after a 20 year hiatus, tonight I'm dining on fresh caught Kokanee from south central BC. With instruction from your videos, I've gone from "maybe I'll get lucky" to consistently putting fish in the kayak.
I'm trying to incorporate an experimental approach to fishing for these beautiful (and tasty!) salmon. So far, I'm bringing home fish consistently and can determine rapidly where they are (and avoid wasting time) and also, where they are not!
So, thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing your secrets.
BTW, I found some drop shot Gama hooks that are .021" shank diameter and they rarely miss their target.

I just use factory settings 99% of the time aside from bumping up the sensitivity
around 10:00 - 10:30 in the video you are talking about cone width and seeing fish deeper but not shallower. you also mention the shallower fish might be feeding more so more likely to bite. I have a question for you about shallower vs deeper fish. In general I seem to notice that if I am seeing fish scattered through the column like you are in the video (say... 10 to 50 ft) if I am catching fish at 20 feet (for example) and they seem to be a bit on the small side I will drop down 10 to 20 feet deeper (so fish at 30-40 feet) and catch bigger fish. Granted you can catch nice fish in the shallower water, too (you did in the video) but in general I noticed that the bigger fish seem to be deeper. Have you noticed that too?
Sometimes that is true but I've found especially in early spring larger Kokes feed shallower

I like Humminbird Helix 5 and 7's for Kokanee. I switched batteries to ReBel batteries as they built in Bluetooth www.rebelbatteries.com?afmc=1d
This battery is cheaper than other options plus built in Bluetooth. How is the performance so far?
Which mapping card from hummingbird do you use for your fish finder? I noticed that there are different kinds of SD cards on hummingbird's website and I'm not sure which one I should choose for the western states. I got the helix 7 chirp mega si g3.
I recommend the basic lakemaster. You only need Lakemaster + or Strikemaster if you are more of a bass angler. amzn.to/40uoTq0
Question: For years I have seen Kokanee this time of year on Lake Billy Chinook jumping out of the water EVERYWHERE, but no matter what I try it is tough to get them. Jigging, surface trolling, spinners, wedding rings, corn, bobbers w/worm, even dry flies on top!
What are they jumping for? I dont see a hatch, are they just having fun? How do you target these jumping kokes? Because I think it would be better chance of one jumping in the boat!
No sure. I target jumpers all the time by trolling with no lead. Maybe if you are running a powerboat its spooking them and you should let more line out 150' back.

Just wondering but what is your preferred time of day to go fishing? I know a lot people (myself included) that try get out around 5:30 and end around 8-9. In a lot of your videos it looks pretty bright out so I was wondering if you actually preferred the afternoon. Thanks!
I prefer mornings but somedays the Kokanee bite turns on later in the day.
In the cariboo 11 to 2 is pretty good as with the morning and evening

How do you tell a trout from a Kokanee on a finder?I bet me and my dad are running through a lot of trout. We have a garmin.
You really can't but you can guess based on depth, schooling behavior, etc. Generally trout run shallower and solo.
Have you noticed a decrease in top speed for the AP120 since you first got it?
Yes about 0.1 to 0.2 decline thus far.
Do you ever use sidescan to locate kokanee?
I've used it on other boats but never on my own as I don't own one but they do work especially for shallow fish.
@@spiltmilt Thanks Tyler. I fish Roosevelt once a year in the spring (wish I could get over there from Vancouver, WA more often). It's such a big lake and they're so high in the water column at that time, I'm hoping sidescan on my new Garmin unit will help. Tight lines.
Great video, in regards to frequency and sonar. The higher the frequency the narrower the cone and the lower the frequency the wider the cone. When I fish shallow I utilize a wider cone to cover more area.
If anyone is looking for a cheaper yet highly effective fish finder I recommend the Garmin Striker 4. It’s great beginner fish finder. Good info Tyler. I really enjoyed the musical montage toward the end too.
Very good explanation of cone depth. I’ve been using electronics since I was a kid in TX chasing sandbass and striper. Most people do not understand how to use their electronics properly.
what type of battery do you use or recommend? a couple options would be nice. And I have a peddle kayak and do not use a electric motor, would you recommend a different kind of battery for those kayaks or what you use on your old town. Thank you for the videos and knowledge.
I think I need to get a fish finder. I feel lost out there even when following the other boats.

I've seen several charts that are widely variable. Generally I use the rule that for every ounce at 100' on the line counter with 10 lb line at 1.5 mph I am getting 10-15' of drop.
I'll be curious to see how you do at Nantahala. From what I understand the Kokanee population in there crashed and hasn't recovered despite effort to re-establish them.

A lot variable. Weather among them being key. I prefer not to fish mornings after full moon nights

Great content as usual. I fish a local lake here near yosemite, in Ca, the kokanee seem to be a bit finicky this year. When fishing say 20-30 ft deep in a boat with a inboard motor what kind of setback would you run? Surely not right off the ball? Thanks! And thanks for the video

Another exceptionally informative video.....thank you! I was wondering if you have the side scan feature on your finder? I use it all the time to help locate those super shallow fish/schools. It helps "fill in" that blind spot inherent with cone signal. I would like to ask, how far back from your downrigger ball do you locate your flasher (attractor)? Is it a constant distance, or does it differ based on circumstances? Thanks in advance....again!!
I don't have side scan but it will probably be my next upgrade. As for setback distances I run anywhere from 10-40' setback from the downrigger. In this instance I did better with a short setback than longer.

Howdy, and thanks for the Kokanee education. I was wondering if you could take this video one step further. My local lake has two strains of trout, Kings, and Kokanee, three varieties of bass, huge crappie, several varieties of catfish, and several other species like pike minnow, carp, shad, bluegill, etc. how do I pluck the kokes out of that jungle?
Kokanee more typically associate with open water than a lot of those species. Trolling with proper Kokanee specific gear and corn should eliminate most of those other species from taking your lure.
@@spiltmilt Appreciate the response. As you mentioned, I do find them to be in more open water, but in this particular lake, with gear, and speeds that only get me the Kokes on other lakes, on Berryessa I have caught everything under the sun minus the smaller varieties of fish. Oddly enough I sent the fish hawk down, and Kokes were being caught at 55', the fish hawk showed that the water temp at that depth was 70 ish degrees. It didn't get under 60 degrees until 105 feet, but the fish were being caught at 55'-60' in 80' +/- of water. (DOES NOT COMPUTE). With our water going down here in California, I'll go hit another spot where I know I can troll at 100' and see what comes out of that. In similar lakes at that depth I'm catching Kings, but obviously at faster speeds.
You my friend need to get you a shuttle hawk for your downrigger never wind the ball up again look it up you will love it..... Let me know....
Used them before. I hated it. Always hung up or lost them.
@@spiltmilt how in the world can you hang them up? As far as loosing them switch your down rigger like to 250 lb braid and you will not loose anymore. I have fished them for 3 years never lost a single one and i put them three ft above the ball on the ball i run a pro troll as a attractor koke fishing has never been better with this setup....

Hey there brother. Could you please explain to me how you have your downrigger on there? Is that a rear facing Kimble Mount Scotty base? I’m getting the Old Town Bigwater 132 and I plan on having two downriggers attached to rear facing Kimble mounts. I just need to know if that seems pretty secure.
