For Remington and rem style actions (closes, Howa, vanguard) do you recommend only bedding the front recoil lug?

You didn't bed the action. You bedded the lug. I'm not sure that's a stress free job, which defeats the purpose of bedding

Nobody only beds the lug, and taping the lug is counter productive to the purpose of bedding a rifle.
