  • Wong Kar-wai made one of our favorite movies with In The Mood For Love. The melancholy romance starring Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung is full of brilliant moments of longing and unrequited love, but one stands out above the rest.
We got to chat with Goran Stolevski, director of Of An Age and You Won’t Be Alone, about this particular moment, what we love so much about it, how it’s impacted his work, and why the brilliance of the editing just might sneak up on you.
This video was produced and edited by Clint Gage, with technical director Marhyan Franzen.
Special thanks to Goran Stolevski for the time! For more filmmaker showcases, be sure to subscribe to CineFix - IGN Movies & TV or click on the below-linked, tangentially related videos!

Every time they pass each other on the stairs is cinematic genius. The music, everything.

Just watched the loose trilogy for the first time.
Been a while since i could believe in the teenager-type romanticism i lost years ago.
Spectacular films. My personal favorite was 2046.

2046 is a great film - it's been far too long since I've seen it. In The Mood For Love is an absolutely _stunning_ masterpiece.

Actually is confirmed that the 'love trilogy' is composed by 'In The Mood for love', '2046', and 'Blossoms Shanghai'

'Days of being wild' was left out by Wong Kar Wai himself

I can only speak to "In the Mood for Love" because I've only ever seen "Chunking Express" and don't remember it well, but I don't think there's anything even slightly resembling "teenager-type romanticism" in ITMFL.

@@Malik-Ibi I feel like it’s just a trick for promotion. Actually, I don’t see Blossom Shanghai has anything to do with the other two films in the trilogy. The connections of the political implications between Days of being wild,In the mood for love and 2046 are stronger and making it a trilogy, even the name of the character play by Maggie Cheung is the same - So Lai Chen. Guess why the name of 2046 is 2046, why the role played by Leslie Cheung trying so hard to escape for her stepmother and look for her birth mother, and also the last few sections in In the mood for love: Colombia got independent from France.

Such a great video, thanks for this. Really nice to hear other filmmakers also edit their films, I know what Goran means about feeling that connection with it! And Clint's love for the film and the craft really shows, reminds you of why cinema is such an awesome artform. Watched 'In The Mood For Love' last night and damn, what a film.

The way I interpret when the two characters hug as she's crying into his arms being shot that way is another way of the camera showing restraint.
A normal romance movie would have this be a wide shot of the two characters in an intimate moment together, but these two cannot be together. Even in the most intimate moment of the movie they do not enter the frame together. Both of them still put up barriers to each other, only letting the smallest bit in.

I watched Wong Kar-Wai's movies in order and all of them struck a chord with a me, except for this one. I don't get the appeal of the repetition, it's boring and lacking substance to me, love the style and the color of course, just another Tar situation for me. Absolutely loved You Won't Be Alone and already own Of An Age and will check it out.
