This whole album blew all of us fans away. From the soft acoustic, the electro, the heavy and the folk style...it definitely caught my ear. One of the great albums of the decade for me.
This song has aged like fine wine. Even more so, when you consider it was released 2 months after the release of the iPhone, so they wrote and recorded this before smart phones were even really a thing.
I like to close my eyes and let the 1's and 0's wash over me. It's such a beautiful song. I love the way Thrice constantly re-invent their sound and aren't afraid to try new things.
so happy this is underrated as fuck. i cannot wait for the day they decide to remaster this and go on tour with this setlist. my brother would play this all the time when i was a kid and i picked up on it and have never forgotten you thrice.
this is the real version of thrice. they have always been really big on experimentalism. deadbolt, good example. its not they were like hey, this piano matches the entire rest of the song. or sihlouette, the time signature change. the real thrice="we will play whatever we want to play" anyone who hates the indexes, is honestly missing out on the beauty of thrice. everything they produce is amazing, and very few bands have the guts to do what they did, and fewer could pull it off.
Cool concept. And sonically, each album "felt" like their respective themes. Saw them live around the earth/air release with Circa Survive at Rams Head Live! in Baltimore. Great smaller venue...great show.
This whole album was way before it’s time. It’s a masterpiece! Thrice did something totally different from their previous stuff and they didn’t get enough credit. They were mixing in EDM beats before when people would call EDM techno lol. Thrice went into the future with this album. #Respect
People were calling EDM Techno in 2007? Wtf are you smoking lad? "EDM beats" yeah, it's just called a beat. And people have been mixing electronic beats with rock for decades now..
@@aloneaflame9343 wtf is a lad? Haha Where are u from? Sounds like not from the USA 🇺🇸. Maybe where you’re living at is different. But where thrice and I are from, EDM wasn’t that popular in the US like it was in Europe back than. Even rappers like eminem even diss “nobody listens to techno” back in the days too lol. Maybe you need to some smoke something to chill the f up lol.
Here's my interpretation: The song is about people losing their voices and opinions to the overwhelming masses of society. The video relates our meloncholy lives to the lifelessness of "ghosts" from the indifferent viewpoint of a security camera-- the camera thus relating to technology and the whole theme of "digitalization." It's not flashy, but I could care less. I love it.
Dude i get so effin annoyed with people that have to fill up comments with "these guys are christian" and then debate forever......religion is about finding meaning in life and to a musician it's one the first things you turn to when you want to write something, so leave it alone already just enjoy the immense talent these guys have. who cares what religion it is anyway it's all the same in the end
To me beggars is a culmination of all their work so far taking the good bits from each of their past, there is something awesome in every thrice album though true music enthusiasts will likely find something about every album to like
I saw thrice tonight in the city. They didn’t play this song and that’s ok. They were amazing and the crowd was actually better than the band. San Francisco has been wanting a band with passion for a long time and we got it tonight.
this is when you have to open your mind and heart to music. there is no "old" thrice or "new" thrice. there style has changed, but they are still thrice. but music isn't about it's style, but more about it's how it makes you feel, or how the artist felt when creating it. my friend and i are writing a concept cd. every song is different in style and genre, because we believe every genre is better at expressing certain emotions.
Thrice is the best. They are Artists. Always changing their sounds and looking for awesome ways to express music. That is Thrice. They may change but they always stay the same. Great music. Great songs.
@TriFekt I like your interpretation! I think it may be about how a lot of our culture and existence has gone digital. There's so many voices and ideas on the internet that it is often easy to feel unheard, everything moves so fast. "Here my voice goes to ones and zeros". For instance, how many people do you think will go back on this video to read the first comments? How many people do you think will see our comments 10 years from now? They'll be lost in a Digital Sea. This video could be gone.
Almost 10 years here. Almost 10 years before you even made this comment, I discovered them on an Atticus CD. Didn't hear any of their other stuff until about a month ago. I'm kind of glad I've only truly discovered them recently as I've been in a bit of a music stagnation lately. The entire Alchemy Index is a beautiful masterpiece to me, and I don't think I would have appreciated it the same way had I come across it earlier. It's like I found a gem in a time capsule, just as beautiful as the day it was put in.
just heard this song and fell in love. great concept, has lots of underlying emotions in the minimal theme, lighting was beautiful especially at the start! daym, i could go on. but 128560 views? =(
thrice is and will always be amazing. if you dont like this song, or record for that matter you are blind to see that not only can they write multiple styles, but they can do it very very well
Thrice is fuckin amazing. They are the most underrated artists in the music business. They incorporate multiple styles in thier later albums and the music is perfect to smoke pot to.
It always feels like a weird dream. So good. I wish I knew how to make music, I'd try to write songs like this one... Always loved the more ambient sounds.
Thier older stuff sounds way different. I've been following thrice since the artist in the ambulance.. and the maturity in the band is really, really nice. You normally never see that.
This video is brilliant. This might have already been pointed out by someone else, but as the video progresses, the footage starts appearing as a "microchip" that's in constant movement. And what better location to film than in a super market? Great symbolism, great video, great song... great band!
i got friends who can't stand my music when i tell them thrice is like a gospel album cause of wat they say n their songs they don't blieve me always ready 2 critesize
Correct. Thrice are not artists. They are masters. To make an album (or two) based on four elements and mold the music to fit each element perfectly is not art. It is mastery.
exactly! i've been a huge thrice fan since they came out with The Illusion of Safety and for some reason they have always changed in the direction my musical tastes were headed. it's sad though because some of my friends where were hardcore thrice fans now think they suck because they went "soft." it's not about what's hard or soft, it's about what is good. thrice is good. very very good.
i know what u mean by mellowed but water is the element that represents the style of this album thats why the sound is like this - brilliant if u ask me. Listen to fire for a bit of groundbreaking atmosphere
exactly. honestly the more mainstream album, i think, is artist in the ambulance and yet everyone taht say they are mainstream now almost all prefer that album. we will never hear new songs like awake and avange the dead, or deadbolt, or phoenix ignition and the list goes on, but yeah, after each album we saw a big change. so iwas expecting all this and compare to most other bands that 'change', thrice always did something new. awsome. thrice 4 life
Awsome video, it's one of the best I've ever seen. Thrice has the greatest music. The video really shows the extent of human greed, and the confusion lost in it.
as much as i dig all thrice, vheissu through the alchemy index is easily the most moving their music has ever been for me. i love the artist in the ambulance, but honestly everything from there back was pretty emo-sounding and in terms of where their music has gone, it was all pretty simplistic back then. every single album they've ever put out has sounded completely different from the last and i'm more than interested to see where they take it next. i love how this band has evolved.
Very well said. From their earlier tracks off of Identity Crisis and Illusion of Safety to The Artist in the Ambulance to Vheissu, The Alchemy Index and their latest round of EP's - the growth and maturity, both in sonic presentation and lyrical content, has been truly awesome to experience and observe. Insightful commentary on spirituality, social conditions, and humanity in general combined with talent and diversity = awesome.
This band is brilliant, and push the envelope with every album release. Everytime I listen to a track from the Alchemy Index I get something more out of it. That the last track on each segment is a sonnet written from the point of view of the element, in true Petrarchan sonnet form, is wonderful. Vhiessu is still amazing. Artist in the Ambulance - deadly. The older stuff is wicked too, but they have evovled to the point where the current stuff is so complex and beautiful it's hard to compare.
artists change. and they can either do so in a good or bad way. most people might call it becoming "corporate" or main stream. but it ultimately depends on the artist. I love what thrice is doing. If i was a band i would hope to be as experimental as they are because that is what true artists should strive for. Bringing the most out of their talents and skills.
I have read what you've been saying on here and I totally agree with you. I've been a thrice fan since 2000 (wish I could lie and say the 90's when they started) and I would even say that I love the newer stuff way better than the old. But I completely support what you're saying. This video is relatively boring because, undoubtedly, the majority of the thrice fan base doesn't even understand this video or get much out of it.
Good to see someone with some sense on youtube posting. You make a fair point. When i saw them live they played more of there new stuff (understandably) and when they came back out for a encore they played red sky which after deadbolt is not really what the crowd wanted and was a bit of an anti-climax.
You know - you can't expect a band to always stay the same. people change, interests change, experiences change. If you don't like what they're doing - quit your whining and move on to another band. I think this song is absolutely amazing - what does it matter what sort of music the band played a year ago? Love it or hate it. Every person, every band evolves. Respect it.
Ilove how they experimented with the different styles and genres, not trying to compare, but definitely reminds me of radio head and incubus. primary examples of change and growth.
Haha this was, acidentally, the first song of Thrice I heard and thought they would such music in general. Now I must say that this sounds pretty awesome. Let's see what their other stuff is like...
I love dustins lyrics, may be best lyricist out there for sure.. So much biblical stuff in here it takes sometimes weeks listening to figure out love it. YHVH is great.
I came for the hardcore sound, stayed for the hauntingly melancholic tunes. I love them at every step of their evolution. It truly takes mastery to move effortlessly between genres.
Thrice is just growing up frm the hard screamo stuff to the nice and soft sound which many thrice fans are hard to accept which means ppl don't really like em at all>.>
Yeah, I know what you mean. The vocalist to Thrice has states all that good stuff. I was just poking some fun. I went to school with the guys in HTD so I meant nothing by it.
i have no idea what it is about this song, but i can't stop listening to it... i think it might have something to do with the way the vocals are presented and the way the whole song sounds as a whole. Either way, i hope this sort of mellow... eclectic sound of theirs is the way they are going in the future. i would love an entire album of this style of music
Great great song. Very Radiohead inspired. In fact, Thrice did say that they wanted to create something like 'In Rainbows' when they set out on this project. I love the contrast between the lyrics and the sounds. Best line 'my voice goes to ones and zeros'. describing that even his voice has to become digitised and how we are perpetuating it by listening. Genius!
Well, it's just a surveillance camera focusing on the isle. But the scene conveys how us humans have become so dependent on technology since the dawn of the invention of civilization that we are now lost from this "digital sea", which is our civilization apart from the natural world that is free from us. "I am sinking beneath the sun" means we have come apart from nature and in reality, we cannot swim back to reach for the sun.
These guys are not just a band, they're a group of talented artists. Think about it, everything that was put into the Earth/Air and Fire/Water albums had particular reasons. For example, listen to the ending of "Child of Dust" on the Earth disc and tell me how that shoveling fade out is not brilliant. There is so much going on in these records that most of us don't even know about, myself included. And that's all I got to say about that...
This video seems like it took a long time to make, what with all the pictures and video footage needed to make it. I really love this song & video, thanks for posting it. ;]
I think thats to special...Thrice is changing and they have changed, but they are still so...so powerful, so great, with such a deep feeling for every listener who has an ear for their songs. And what is so amazing: You can f.ex. say: Blink 182 sounds like...this band and this band and 100 other punk-bands...but Thrice...Thrice sounds like?...Youre right, Thrice, and nothing other.
This whole album blew all of us fans away. From the soft acoustic, the electro, the heavy and the folk style...it definitely caught my ear. One of the great albums of the decade for me.
Yes 100% this!

Underrated & ahead of its time
the lyrics are so dark and depressing and yet has such a tune that i can't explain
