    Even regular potting soil can become hydrophobic. Always moisten your dirt before planting

      How do you get it absorb water? I have organic soil I was using and it literally wouldn’t soak through. Jsut the top got wet and drained out. I kept trying and nothing worked. Ended up having to soak the terra cotta pot in a bucket of water to have it absorb through the clay into the soil. I’ve never experienced hydrophobic soil. Crazy

      @@Narrowway7 it takes time give little water in batches every half hour to hour or so. Till it absorbs water. Also other soil amendments can help reduce this. Opening pockets in the soil so water can enter en then slowly soak in.
      Coco coir, perlite, vermiculite, pumice, charcoal chucks. Etc can help just make sure to read very well how much to add if you want to use those. They can increase water retention of drainage. So too much can be an issue drying out to quickly or waterlogging your plants.

      @@Narrowway7 I had some strawberries that would not absorb water since we neglected them for so long (sorry) but I started watering them everyday and they started to absorb it, I also made a few small pockets

    I 100% just planted cloves of garlic in potting soil. They're thriving in the bedroom window. Plants are wild.

    Thank you for your video!I think I will try to mix water and soil before seedling. Last year, I planted my seeds in a dry soil environment then started watering them. In order to maintain the wet soil I watered them once a day. Then I got mold in my plants💀

    • @gardeningindoors
      @gardeningindoors  Рік тому +1

      Mold sometimes happens during the seed starting process since you're not able to let the soil get dry. Some people swear by sprinkling cinnamon on the soil to prevent mold but I haven't had luck with it. Increasing the airflow with a fan will help but that of course dries the soil out faster

      @@gardeningindoors If mold appears, should you scrape it off? Will the seeds be ok if they germinate after you spot mold?

    I'll use a four or six inch pot, and put potting soil in the bottom couple inches and seed starting mix on top of that. Or I'll just mix seed starting mix with some potting soil or garden soil to loosen it up a good bit.

    Yeah I should know this. This year I started some seeds for my outdoor herbs. For some reason I feel like starting mix is even more hydrophobic now, it’s been at least 5 years for me since I last used it. I forgot this year and what a nightmare. My Thai basil did woot tho. 🎉

    I have a bunch or different chili pepper seeds sleeping in a jar for around a year now. They look dry and crisp.. Not sure if they'll still germinate

    Any opinions on seed starting mix vs coconut coir?

    • @gardeningindoors
      @gardeningindoors  Рік тому +7

      I've never compared the 2 but I know some seed starting mediums are just coco coir. I have some but haven't tried it for seed starting yet.

      @_cloudface_ Рік тому +2

      @@gardeningindoors maybe an idea for a future video? I'd do it myself but you've already got an audience. I've mostly used coca coir because it's nuetral, absorbs water while still draining and is generally cheaper than seed starting mix. IMHO coca coir plus worm juice and something we have in Australia called "Charlie Carp"* and even a complete amateur can grow almost any vegetable, herb or most fruits.
      *it's a liquid fertilizer made out of carp fish because it's an invasive pest species in Australia

    • @gardeningindoors
      @gardeningindoors  Рік тому

      That depends on what your idea of cheap is. You'll need grow lights, possibly a heat mat if growing from seed, pots, soil and seeds.
